A band that's been releasing albums for three years was named Best Newcomer. Fans began leaving during a reunion performance by the Eurythmics, which was supposed to be one of the night's highlights. And the night's biggest ovation wasn't for a musician, but for a boxer. There were three big winners at the U.K. equivalent of the Grammys, held Tuesday night at the Docklands Arena: pop star Robbie Williams won three awards, while Australian pop singer Natalie Imbruglia and Welsh rockers the Manic Street Preachers, each won two. There was no incident to match Chumbawamba member Danbert Nobacon's dousing of Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott with a bucket of ice water at the 1998 ceremony, or Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker's disruption of Michael Jackson's performance in 1996 -- Cocker jumped onstage and mooned the audience. The Preachers were named Best British Group and also won the award for Best Album, for This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours. The album, which includes the single "If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next" <http://media.addict.com/atn-bin/get-music/Manic_Street_Preachers/If_You_Tol erate_This_Your_Children_Will_Be_Next.ram> (RealAudio excerpt), has yet to be released in the U.S. "We are the people's group," Preachers bassist Nicky Wire told an audience that was part industry, part fans. "We believe if you've got something to say, you should say it to as many people as possible." The Preachers performed their forthcoming U.K. single, "You Stole the Sun >From My Heart," during the ceremony. The night's first award went to Scottish indie rockers Belle and Sebastian, who beat out the boy band 5ive and pop group Steps to be named Best British Newcomer -- despite having released three albums and several EPs over the past three years. The most recent of those albums is The Boy With the Arab Strap (1998), which includes "It Could Have Been a Brilliant Career" <http://media.addict.com/atn-bin/get-music/Belle_And_Sebastian/It_Could_Have _Been_A_Brilliant_Career.ram> (RealAudio excerpt). Culture Club singer Boy George, who presented the Best Dance Act award to big-beat DJ Fatboy Slim later in the night, said, "I'm very excited about Belle and Sebastian!," when asked what his highlight of the evening was. U2 singer Bono dissed the upcoming celebration of the new millennium while speaking on behalf of Jubilee 2000, a lobbying effort aimed at asking the world's richest countries to cancel the debts of poor countries. "This whole concept of celebrating the millennium, the whole concept of celebrating a moment in time, what is it -- it's bollocks [nonsense], isn't it?" Bono said. But he said the Jubilee 2000 plan, which supporters have compared to the 1985 charity concert Live Aid in terms of potential impact, is "the biggest idea I have ever heard, an idea that might give the millennium some meaning. We've just got to stop asking starving people to give back the money our governments have loaned plus interest." Bono then walked to a table where former heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali, another supporter of the movement, was sitting. He gave Ali an award recognizing Jubilee 2000, and the boxer received a prolonged standing ovation. Another ovation might have been expected for Eurythmics Dave Stewart and Annie Lennox, who accepted an award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music -- Motown legend Stevie Wonder presented it to them -- and then ended the show by performing together for the first time in seven years. But the crowd starting leaving during the five-song set, during which they played such '80s hits as "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" and "Here Comes the Rain Again," with Wonder joining in on harmonica and keyboards. Lennox and Stewart, who are working on a Eurythmics reunion album wore matching Union Jack outfits, and Lennox made a plea on behalf of two black murder victims who are at the center of a controversy over police investigations in the U.K. Another performance highlight was the pairing of David Bowie and Placebo -- glam-rockers old and new -- for a version of '70s rockers T. Rex's "20th Century Boy," a song Placebo performed in the movie "Velvet Goldmine." Bowie wore a full-length leather coat and a hairdo that harked back to his mid-'70s, Low image. Robbie Williams, former singer for the pop group Take That, won awards for Best Single ("Angels"), Best Video ("Millennium") and Best British Male. He opened the show by descending to the stage, via a cable, from the arena ceiling, and performing the single "Let Me Entertain You" surrounded by a horde of futuristically clad dancers. Charlotte Heatcote, 23, a Williams fan, said he was "the most fanciable man alive" and "better than everybody else there." Well thanks to FluffySarah we know all the gossip about the animosity between steps fans and Belle and Sebastian, but i have to report back from the billie camp (i just got my e-newsletter from her you see) and she doesn't even mention the brits. Sinister: Brit Awards on Danish TV

Just a quick word to let anyone with Danish TV (Denmark, southern Sweden and maybe northern Germany (?)) know that there's a chance to watch our heroes glorious moment on Dansk Tv2 tomorrow (Saturday night) 0:20 - 2 something, I can't remember (the night between Sat and Sunday that is), so get the champagne out. I'm thinking about finally opening that bottle of kiddies strawberry champagne that has been giving me evil eyes ever since my brother gave it to me on my birthday last year and I placed it in the far end of my flat (you would have to if you'd seen the colour!). Anyway, I'll make sure not break it open before Richard and Nick have been up to collect the award incase it really is poisonous. Anna :) P.S. Argh! I just realised I won't be home tomorrow night!! Just my luck. Sinister: things are looking up in general

some points for you, pop pickers 1) siblings - due to the fact that prior to their brit nomination and win b&s were a relitavely obscure band, my elder brother used to mock me, telling me that b&s were "boring, rubbish, poofy crap". So, when they won, we were watching the news (it was either scotland today or reporting scotland - the bit with stevie throwing stuff at angus simpson on tv was cool), and he saw a few of the members. He called good ol' sarah a "fat girl", and called chris geddes "the most geeky man alive - supergeek". This caused me to become angry, so I was forced to attack him. Ufortunately, he punched me in the face, which was sore, so I retreated to my room to listen to some soothing, calming music, by b&s, the delgados, and the pastels. 2) my school - I go to holyrood, in the southside of the city. Famous people, such as simple minds, and that 'take the high road' starlet, joe mcfadden, went to my school. unfortunately, I live two miles away, in newlands, and to avoid having to sit near neds on the train, I walk there in the moirning, and home at night. Ahoy there, shipmates ONE NIGHT IN BANGKOK Hold on to your hats, because I have some disturbing news. While it is delightful to bask in the rosy glow of victory, I fear there is something rotten in the State of POP. Our triumph may be forever tarnished. Pull up a chair and let me tell you the sorry details... Dedicated followers of football will have been shaken to the very core by the recent news that our national game is actually controlled by a shadowy far-eastern gambling cartel. For these inscrutable chancers, the premiership is a mere ball-bearing in a global roulette wheel of fortune, a trinket for their idle amusement. And now that they have been rumbled in their infernal match-fixing, they have turned their attention farther afield, and their cancer has spread deep into the heart of our culture. Belle and Sebastians odds of winning the best newcomer awards at the Brits this week were so great that as soon as the shortlist was announced, phonelines around the Pacific Rim went into meltdown. The entire Hong Kong stockmarket was wagered on the screwball chamber-indie octet coming up trumps. Brokers in Bagkok hoped to resurrect the Thai baht by banking on the winsome troubadors victory. They could not be allowed to fail. And so the BPI directors were treated to a slap-up meal at Wagamama, Steps were fobbed off with a year's free shopping at Muji, and 5ive were given their weight in Hello Kitty merchandise. The path had been cleared.... ....And who is the shadowy mastermind behind the greatest gambling coup of the twentieth century? Well, who do we know in the far east, who is au-fait with the latest happenings in indie-pop, and is feared throughout both hemispheres for her legendary poker skills? Yes, reliable sources inform me that it is none other than our old friend Lucky Yingluck...OOOOOOooooon herself! Rumour has it that she devised the entire scheme to pay for a luxury private jet, painted with Badtz Maru characters, to ferry her to the Camber Sands Bowliestock weekend. Who will end her malign reign??? LEONARD-SKEONARD Meanwhile, in domestic news, I am pleased to announce that Mr Christopher Leonard will be bringing the Sleekasounds roadshow to The Poetry Cafe Social in Covent Garden next Friday, 26 January, from 7.30pm. Rumour has it that he will be joined in his encore by none other than Mrs Murdoch herself, so make a note in your diaries. Fun and games and indie-schmindie hi-jinks for all the family.
