Hey! Did anyone else hear that Belle and Sebastian won best newcomer at the Brits?! But seriously... This popped into my head while I was doing my radio show today. Maybe David can answer this. (where have I heard that before?) Was the Tigermilk album ever bought by anyone for a low fixed price? I've heard so many urban legends about people discovering the ark of the covenant or giving up their first born children in attempts to find this on vinyl that I am starting to have my doubts. I have just watched the important bit of the Brits and have recovered sufficiently from laughing at Zoe Ball's hair to say WOO-HOO once again. I sacrificed watching Boyzone to bring you some more media coverage of the little known lo-fi tweesters.... For those of you outwith Scotland, you missed some "amusing" local news coverage of the award on the tea-time news bulletins. Poor Mick must be having an identity crisis with all those people calling him Nick all the time - even Scotland Today was at it. Those impenetrable Scottish accents, eh? The Brits coverage was intercut with lovely pictures of the band relaxing in the studio. Strangely no Stuart M or Isobel, and Stevie was variously seen to be hiding behind the Daily Record and throwing things at the telly. There was a microphone to be seen, but there was no sign at all that they were doing what the news claimed (ie staying in to record the new album). Sarah said something that I missed because I was trying to find the remote control to turn up the volume. Oh, and Neil was there too (although he did make a run for it as the camera panned round in his direction) That was it - oh and Jackie Bird the newsreader made the amusing observation that she thought Belle and Sebastian was a TV series. One programme went into HMV in Glasgow and asked a variety of baseball-hatted kids and old people of they had heard of Belle and Sebastian (surprisingly given the wide cross-section of people interviewed - that's sarcasm by the way - nobody had) If only our very own Sininster chum Alasdair Cook still worked there, eh? They also played one nano-second of "Is It Wicked..." and made another amusing crack, this time about the lion not doing much. What quality is to be found in regional journalism.... Also on a media note, I am ashamed to admit it, but I used to go to school with the Daily Record reporter responsible for that report so thoughtfully posted up by Honey. He was a few years above me, but it just goes to show what a public school education does for you...the Herald also said that Belle and Sebastian had four albums out, so let's all pop down to our local record shop and annoy the know-all counter assistant for the fourth Belle and Sebastian album, brandishing various Scottish newpapers as proof when he swears that they only have three. I remember someone having trouble with record shop assistants before, maybe this'll confuse them so much they'll stop pretending they know everything. A prize for the first one who finds someone who agrees that there are four albums (as we say in Scotland, if the Daily Record says it, it must be true...) Well that'll be it for now then. Keep smiling kids, it's nearly Bowlie ticket time..... Sinister: Brit thrilla!

Years from now, our grandchildren will ask "Where were you when you found out that Belle and Sebastian won a Brit?" I'll have to make something up, because "goofing off at work" just doesn't cut it in the exciting answer department. I happen to know for a fact that it was my vote that won it for them. I voted on the internet, and after I voted, this huge nudie picture of Mick popped up, with a little cartoon dialog balloon that said "Thanks for winning it for us, sweetie. Print out this picture and bring it 'round to the church for a special surprise from Stu. M and me." My plane for Glasgow leaves in two hours. But what I really want to know is, why wasn't there this much excitement when Belle and Sebastian won the 1998 R.A.Y.A.? For those of you who don't know (for those of you who've been living in a cave!), that stands for Reid's Album of the Year Award, and B&S have won two in a row. So where's my "ecstatic" letter from Richard? Talk about ungrateful! Am I the first person to wonder what Fluffy is doing on the Steps list? > Apart from the answer the question much asked on this list, "what is > lo-fi, exactly?" (answer: it's Belle and Sebastian), I can see at > least 5 other deliberate mistakes - they obviously haven't been > reading the FAQ. See if you can spot them, readers. > Ooh! Ooh! I know! Sinister: BRITS! TITS! LIPS! POWER!

Kids. Yes me again, with my Spring/Summer 1999 post. Do you know what was stopping me? I moved house in December and have been convinced for two months that my modem was Kaput caused by being dropped from a great height during the move and finally I decided to get it fixed today so I could join in on all the BRITS! lark. So I disconnected all the leads, only to find I'd stuck the modem lead in the wrong bloody hole! Puchuuh! I really have gone round the twist, dip dap dop, loobie-doodah. Lots has happened. I have bought a flat in Stoke Newington and have all the responsibilities of a Home-Owner now, with mortgages and surveys and solicitors. Its all been a bit of a headache, the only joy being I fancy my estate agent, yeah! I do! he has a requisite double chin and everything. I move in the end of March so will have a little party, only it will be a small one, as its only small, in fact theres not enough room to swing a cat, so only little people please, Tag, Katrina, uhhh thats it. I'll sit on the doorstep. Yeah, so the BRITS! WOOOh! The Big Breakfast this morning was hilarious, with 'laughing' Richard and 'nodding' Mick doing a little lap of honour round Johnnie Vaughan and Kelly. Then later they joined in with the new game 'Punaround' which involved a plot very similar to 'runaround' , only Mick couldn't decide which way to run so just followed Richard, laughing all the while, BRIT! in hand! I had acupuncture this afternoon, it was a bit dicky. Camber Sands! Whats all that about? I hope theres going to be lots of chalet-hopping. We can all go down the 'front' at night to the amusement arcades and get beaten up by the locals. Lets all conspire to chuck Stuart in the sea for a 'laugh' and see if he can swim. We can put seaweed in each others beds and jellyfish in their pants. It'll be like a geography field trip. Ace. If you play your cards right I'll post again before summer's out. Lucky you, John. My best friend's going, however, which means that she'll bring back lots of lovely memorabilia, so it's some consolation... Re. Brits, i'd honestly like to thank Honey, Tag and Starry(aka Fluffy Sarah) for their sheer fun postings. Especially that snippet from the Steps list. I'm still laughing. And still can't believe that they actually won --- marvellous. Sadly enough, there's no TV broadcast where i am, but hopefully someone(or rather, everyone)in the UK will tape it.
