Lit-bores, Isobel's book list says Robert Wilser but I'd guess it should be Walser. There are two writers called Robert Walser. One has written an academic study on heavy metal, another lived in Switzerland and wrote little stories. I'll bet a large Toblerone against your Krokus LP it's number 2. I learnt about him on the Fall list about a year back and Fall fans invented the internet, pal. Do we think Iz has heard of Jean Seberg, at all. Sinister: give yrself up to the allure...

good afternoon/evening, sinisterites... perhaps it was divine inspiration (or sinister designs upon my all-too-easily-distracted mind), but i was hit yesterday with the overwhelming desire to re-read "catcher in the rye." kimmy helped me out by lending me her beloved copy (kisskiss, KIsMet!), and, rather than tackle my chemistry homework or review for my english midterm, i spent yesterday curled up on a chair in our sunroom, under a blanket, cat in my lap, tea at my side... delving into the strange and beautiful world of one holden caufield... i made a bookmark out of black paper and silver pen -- i wrote "give yourself up to the allure of catcher in the rye"... and that is exactly what i did.... oh! i am so anxious for this week of exams to be over -- for on saturday i board a plane for london... perhaps i'll never return. i'll fall in love with the city and stay there forever.... on a more practical note, i have tix for this looper gig, which is apparently at the improv theatre on 24 march -- next wednesday. i have not heard any mention of it here -- is anyone else going?? take care, marie +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the reborn Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail "sinister(a)majordomo.net". Sinister: Ooberman

Yes! Ooberman are great aren't they. Ive got their Shorley Wall EP = (Seratonin Smile is very good on it). Try going into you're local Virgin = Megastore and asking for Ooberman and watch the assistant's face drop. = It took them half and hour to work out what I was saying. I do seem to = prefer bands like Belle, the Tindersticks, Ooberman, Ben Harper etc but = then I break the mould with the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion.=20 The SWCI idea is good, but posibly too general in assuming that = everybody comes from the same background. I think it's more in the type = of music they play, not the kind you have to try hard to get into (but = not MOR) and the kind with a good story in it (She's selling seashells = on the Shorley Wall). I'm afraid Pulp (or plop as I like to call them) = are not on my list. Jarvis Cocker (illegitimate son of Joe Cocker) gets = on my tits, but some of the sogs are good. REM do come into the equation = though, not exactly the working class type but definitely the well = stuctured story orientated music. Maybe that's it then, just very well = structured music. Who knows what accounts for taste? Some people like = Billie after all. News Flash...Pete Waterman is accusing Billboard of being fixed after = Steps didn't get to number one. It was in his business plan and = everything, and now he's going to have to go home and rewrite it all. Aw = poo, he said at a recent press conference. Later, Oliver A levels are so depressing. Hello Sininstines, Hm, I've just had a look at Ronnie Black's photo page and there are some really lovely photos of various members of B&S. I think he's got everyone in there somewhere except Stevie. There's a nice silhouette of Stuart David playing piano, and a gorgeous picture of Isobel in the dark with just enough sidelighting to make her profile. Er, the picture is gorgeous, I mean, of course. Anyway, they're quite neat, just thought I'd let someone else know besides Megan. I was so pleased with myself when I could look and say "Aha, he burned there!" or "He dodged there!" As far as all of B&S' songs sounding like Summer....no. That's totally wrong. Sorry. A lot of them, maybe, but I can't see how anyone could think "Fox in the Snow" would sound summery. For me I associate summer with sweat, heat, and sloth. Sweating because it's so hot and muggy, sloth because you don't want to get up and go about because it's hot and muggy and you'd get all sweaty. Summer is made 10-20 times worse when you don't have air-conditioning. I think summer is my least favorite season of the year. Having said that, there are definately some B&S songs that undeniably exude summer, especially from TWATTYBUS. For me, Sinister always had a quality of Autumn or Winter, probably owing in part to the fact that I first had the album in those two seasons. I just think that B&S, like most bands, have different feels to their songs for differet seasons. However sometimes this is determined by when you first heard it. I suppose if you bought all three albums and all the EPs over the summer, they'd always remind you of summer, even when they were singing about snow. All speculative of course. And for the record, I can't remember the last time someone used Autumn or Fall in an adjective sense. So I don't think anyone says Fall-ish. Friends Mark Inter-Toto informed us "but what really inspired me to write is your less-than-impressednes at Robbie Williams. Why do broad-minded people with perception and intelligence readily admit to liking this irrelevant little man? " The thing about Williams is sure, he is an irrelevant little man and even I'm getting starting to get tired of his media ubiquity and cheeky-chappie-forces-sweetheart persona, but he is pure, unapologetic, route one entertainment. He's relentlessly showbiz and that's how I like my pop stars. I once saw him do a brief turn at The Regency Rooms in London. This is a kitsch cabaret show both ironic and cheesy at the same time. On the bill that night were none other than veteran hoofer Lionel Blair and dimunitive seventies sensation Leo Sayer while Robbie sat at a table at the front with his entourage. The host (who knows him quite well) called him on stage for an "impromptu" turn. He did Angels and then after the host and his band had started doing Let me Entertain You he was summoned back. He rocked that room like a master - which he is. The kids were mad for him. It was pointless, mindless fun. It said nothing to me about my life and thank God for that. As an aspiring performer myself I was almost in awe of his performance. He may not be the most appealing character but he's a fabulous performer and I take my hat of to him. I'm currently reading Giles Smith's Lost in Music - it's fantastic. Sinister: B+S and Tindersticks

All this talk of the seasons and how they relate to songs has indeed struck a chord. It ties in with a discussion which sprung up on the Tindersticks list. For those familiar with Tindersticks' albums the first one (cover: painting of a flamenco dancer) is autumnal (all those reds and browns). The second album (cover: suit fitting in black and white) has a wintery feel whereas Curtains is more spring/summer (cover: roses coming into bloom). Maybe the new Tindersticks album will be summery disco tunes. For those who are interested, it's going to be called 'Simple Pleasures' As an aside, do the Americans on the list use the word 'autumnal' or do they use a descriptive word based on 'fall' like 'the weather was very fallian today' So much music is all 'look at me, look at me, aren't I fab'. I think this is what connects fans of B+S, Tindersticks and also Pulp, as Jan said. All these bands don't *demand* our attention like acts such as Oasis, the Verve and Robbie Williams. They seem to say 'We quite like the music we play and it would be quite nice if you'd give it a listen. We're not going to force you to listen to it though'. I suppose the lyrics of B+S and Pulp also share the theme that a lot of them are about people other than the author. There's the sense of the quiet outsider, peering through the windows of other peoples lives. Due to a bit of luck I had at the bookmakers I had money to burn when I went out to purchase the Looper album so I bought the Smog CD 'Knock Knock'. It is bloody fantastic and I'm wondering if any Sinisterines have any recommendations as to their previous output. I vaguely remember a song about horses which was quite good. I've only been on the list a month or so and I was amazed at the length of all the postings. 'How can they all find so much to write about', I thought. This reminds me of my idea for a name for a B&S tribute band: Nicked Drake. Sorry if the subject of names of tribute bands has been done to death here, I've been away for a while (not posted since the Manchester Christmas shows). I like clever names of tribute bands me. If I was south american, and could play any instruments, and had some friends who used to be really angsty, but are now a bit bloated, and they could play instruments too, we'd call ourselves the Hispanic Street Preachers. Woo! Lesley Jo, give it to me one more time! The anagrams, cheesy or not, are disturbingly appropriate on occasion, especially "Bible lad seen Satan"...disturbing stuff...but what really inspired me to write is your less-than-impressednes at Robbie Williams. Why do broad-minded people with perception and intelligence readily admit to liking this irrelevant little man? Relief at being told by style spokespeople that it's okay to like bland, unthinking pap, perhaps, thereby not forsaking your hard-earned indie cred? Inoffensive is *not* a good thing - don't let him fool you. "Angels" was quite good, though :) Kerouac may have been a hero to millions, etc. - but, as Michele pointed out, why the apology, Ari? Don't let yourself feel intimidated into retracting your opinions because others put their own more forcefully... Andrew Tracey - I could do with a bit of luck at the bookies - any tips? Ideally something where the masses of sinister punters can influence the result in our favour (you can be pretty sure that we wouldn't have given a draw in Madison Square Gardens, unless we hadn't let the fight start in the first place in case someone got hurt)...
