Evening All, Firstly, a question for all you philosophy students out there: Can a mailing list be a mailing list, when nobody sends any mail? Discuss. (Preferably on the Jeepster list, so that there's some traffic to enable new subscribers to tell that they've actually joined.) Anyway. My plans for intensive training for the Bowlie have gone awry. Moons ago I resolved to revise hard, listening to the (?) seven B&S tapes in rotation to arrive at that necessary familiarity with the lyrics, so that I can mouth all the words in my flat off-key stage whisper during the gig. I was aiming for total recall, so that the minutest change of words by Mad Murdoch could result in a knowing smile passing immediately across my lips, enabling onlookers to realise they were in the presence of a true believer. Failed miserably. For some reason I've been listening to Orbital in the car (dead loud - scared the boss when I arrived at work the other morning) and Catatonia (does "hopeless third album" come after "difficult second"?) I also got dragged off to see The Fun Loving Criminals the other night: definitely a mistake, as they're one of those weird bands that play for over an hour and a half, talk to the audience, get people dancing, scary shit like that. That Huey though, he's a real sort. That geezer from Indian Ropeman was scary too, partly because he's the spitting image of my brother-in-law. Stop rambling. What was the answer to Tag's eminently sensible question, as to how many keys to a Bowlie chalet? I don't recall seeing an answer (or any jokes about how many B&S fans it might take to turn just one, let alone several) Another problem troubling me is who the hell will be in the Stage 2 bit on Sunday night, and therefore how will 2600 people fit in the Stage 1 bit, that doesn't hold that many people anyway? Nearly done. I reckon I can trump you all in the school uniform competition though. How does a mid 16th-century ensemble of ankle-length navy blue coat with silver buttons and leather belt, hairy grey breeches with silver buttons at the knee, long yellow woollen socks, hand-me-down clumpy black shoes resoled by the school's cobbler, topped off with white bands at the throat, worn every school day from 11 to 17 years old grab you? Oh, I forgot the white buttonless shirt, held together by the big safety pin that went through the bands to hold them in place (& through your windpipe most mornings as well, at the ungodly hour we had to rise.) Sinister: Gentle Waves (my God! he used the actual proper name!) review

Here, for anyone who's interested, is a rather nice review of the Glasgow gig on Saturday from the Glasgow Herald. Belle and Sebastian's cellist and vocalist, Bel Campbell, has made a solo album under the name The Gentle Waves. Critics who pretend to regret that B&S triumphed over the group Steps at the Brit Awards detect in The Green Fields of Foreverland a fey indie-girl indulging in an Edwardian hippy picnic, and this on the strength of the title alone. But the true and now considerable B&S fanbase is highly motivated. A girl in the audience, announces Stuart Murdoch, has followed the Gentle Waves to Leeds, London, and Cardiff, apparently finding the latter gig cancelled ("Say you're sorry!" calls a voice). Allowing Mr Murdoch to romp after this particular stick on his own, Bel busies herself with her role as band leader, introducing Margaret Smith (flute, xylophone, etc) pointing out that we already know everyone else. And indeed, the rest of the seven-piece band are all members of the Belle & Sebastian collective. However, the Gentle Waves turns out not to be B&S beneath a shifting spotlight. At it's heart is Bel's small, soft voice. Around her, the band move from one instrument to another, sympathetically changing the textures from a loping country bass and slide guitar to glittering arpeggio with muted horn and flute. The timeless scene is set by two short French movies : The Red Balloon and Truffaut's Les Mistons. Stories of naive grace, love misunderstood, loss and understanding, light and darkness. The chanteuse is dressed in black, the model of a student teacher in mid-calf pleated skirt. She sings Evensong in French translation, or perhaps that is how she wrote it. The Gentle Waves: not so much a gig as an event. (By Peter Easton) Also, do Chris and Keith know that Chas and Dave are playing at the Cottier Theatre on Monday? Talking of organs (ooh!), or at least pianos, has anyone seen a film called The 5000 Fingers Of Dr T? It was on telly the other day. It was apparently based on a book by Dr Seuss and was about a boy who dreamt of an evil music teacher called Dr Terwilliker who was training 500 boys (with 5000 fingers) to play an enormous grand piano with thousands of keys. Scary stuff. Luckily the plumber saved the day. That's all for now. hallo, sinister. it's 8am, too early -- and my paper is due in one and a half hours. yes, i'm a student, therefore i feel compelled to tell you all about all the work i have... hey, it says "students" right in the footer, so i feel justified in exploiting my collegiate experience. speaking of the footer, i rather like the gangwanking whimsy-thon part... it's got that s&m/biblestudies thing about it -- cute but vaguely sinister, yes? when my friends comment that belle & sebastian are cute (having heard a few songs here and there), i'm like, yeah but they're so Dirty -- you have to listen to the lyrics. ah, but they don't believe me. i agree with pj miller that the press, from what i've read, seem to make stuart m. out to be a freak and a half. i don't know the guy, so i can't say -- maybe he Does run around in shorts and no underwear, and while i'm sure that most of the biscuit-nibbling, nambling pambling list got a kick out of that image (uh, yeah), i think it's just the press being bored b/c they can't actually Talk to the guy in the silver trousers... oh, by the way, i too vote for "i nambled and pambled with isobel campbell." sadly, i won't be crocheting at cambersands (although i CAN crochet -- oh geez, i'm so cool, yeah?), or cosuming any rice pudding, or (hmmmm....) participating in said whimsy-thon.... but you sinister lot go and have yrselves a real good time, okay? and why is everyone dissing looper? i think the album is awesome -- as for the repeating melody, isn't that kind of the point? like, video loops and looped beats and all? it makes for a nice, cohesive, continuous 40 minutes (or whatever) of music.... okay, i'll put this post out of its misery, having worked about 75% of the footer phrases into my 4 paragraphs -- i need to write my paper.... xo, marie +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the reborn Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail "sinister(a)majordomo.net". Sinister: Slouching Towards Bowlie Mayhem

I too thought the Bowliefest was going to be cack, but now I'm knock-kneed at the thought of missing those fabulous special interest short films. Can someone bootleg them for me, please? Bad cowboy songs? "There's a Guy Works Down the Chip Shop Swears He's Elvis" and "Crocodile Shoes" and "Don't Come the Cowboy With Me Sonny Jim" by Kirsty Macoll and Spender. I vote for "I nambled and pambled with Isobel Campbell". JEEPSTER PISS-TAKE CORNER: I also enjoy the B&S articles in the music press, I just say they're shite in a vain attempt to get on Beepster's nerves, seeing as they seem to virtually write them these days. I particularly enjoy the increasingly far-fetched attempts to make Murdoch out to be a complete freak, even more of a loony than he really is. I mean for example - over to Mister Jones: "He came in wearing just a vest, a pair of shorts and Doc Martens, put his foot up on one of those white traffic bollards and started playing these incredible songs." Does that mean he wasn't wearing underpants? If not, did his goolies fall out when he put his foot up on the "white traffic bollard"? No wonder Mister Jones was taken aback.... "For three months afterwards, I still couldn't even really talk to Stuart because I was just so in awe of him." With the Scottish elections coming up, I wonder who B&S are going to vote for? Is Murdoch a Donald Dewar devotee? Will Isobel commit the "unpardonable folly" of voting SNP? Does Sarah get a vote? I would ask the folks at Beepster, but they go all funny when they hear the word "vote". Ha ha, just a bit of friendly ribbing. But I'm a bit surprised by the fact that none of these articles in the music press seem willing to dig a little deeper. Surely they don't really believe that ten thousand people voted for B&S in the Brits? Even educated fleas can see that the idea is preposterous and ludicrous, not to mention outlandish. And why don't they reject the received wisdom that S L Murdoch is a really great songwriter? I mean, he's not bad....and does anyone else think Paul Simon and Bob Dylan are on a par with each other? Mitchell, I saw an album by Kate Jugsy yesterday, and it was really cheap, but I couldn't buy it because I was affronted by her Brian May bubble perm. Has it gone yet? meganelise is the birthday girl...tomorrow...sigh...and she doesn't know how to feel...the boy who is always working wants to take her somewhere and although that makes her feel very special and happy...she hates her own birthday...she much rather loves to celebrate other's birthdays well if meganlise is in London and wants to join wee Karen and myself celebrate our birthdays tonight (15th) at The Water Rats Theatre in Kings Cross, shes more than welcome, my friend Suzanne is playing and we have a guest list and I may even run to some champagane... As always I buy myself the best birthday presents - this year in was the Looper and Ben & Jason albums. Hullo to each and every happy-yet-sinister-bunny, well, it seems as though many, many, many bunnies are coming out of the brush and thickets, having thoroughly gesticulated.
