Mother ? Can year me, mother ? Another richly textured weekend of Sinister and Sinister-inspired shenanigans... **Friday** El Deano swilled, gargled and spat before oozing the following minty-fresh words: > this all happened on the way back from the gig last night. pam, bowlie > bus pam and friends in some church hall in greenwich. you should've been > there, it was largely empty. and pam got to sing one with the jasmine > minx which i doubt she'd've thought possible all those years ago when > they had those classic creation singles out (they did 'cold hands, warm > heart' which pretty much made the evening). Sright - a handful of intrepid souls donned breathing apparatus and ventured into the Tubeless hinterland of south-east London to patronise our little pop show at St Alfeges Church Hall. These ecclesiastical types are clearly rolling in it - the kitchen was fitted out with the shiniest Smeg cooker youve ever seen. Collection to mend the church roof ? Pah. Highlight for me was inevitably the entire Pines set, especially the spine-tingling Julie London number. Dr Joe B, who didnt stick around long enough to graduate from the Sinister nursery but got justly rewarded for his time at Birkbeck, picking out delicious jazz chords and the spectral presence to his right all velvety and cucumber-cool. But I might be biased. A bit. **Saturday** An afternoon of cheese-related japery dissolved into an evening sojourn to Basingstoke through the fiercest electrical storm this side of Okie. Mr FatSlug of this parish plied us with dipping substances and beer as we soaked up the pizazz of Eurovision on *two* televisions. Oh, the howls of derision as it became clear that the Swedish "silicon mermaid" (Giitas perfect description, if memory - and the message box open in the other window - serves) had outscored Icelands perky effort. Abba revival fever and nothing more. More disturbing was the decision of the entire French nation to award the hideous spectacle of Portugals entry a full 12 points. Which, I think, was all they got from 23 rounds of voting. Bizarre. Lots of monkey business on the last train back to Waterloo, but you wouldnt want to know about that. **Sunday** The weather Gods did not smile on SE10 for the Sinister picnic. The Young Gods did, but we told them to piss off. The previous days flag-cracking currantbunny scorcher had given way to a grey pall and a distinct nippyness. A view of Canary Wharf and a sparkly Trousers-helmed popquiz was not enough to persuade the multitude to further dampen their behinds, so, through Observatory and Market, we frolicked to Chez Steady-Pam and did the indoor thang. Everyone was luvverly - you can all come again. Particularly that saucy gal who treated us to the definitive version of "Baker Street" between bouts of narcolepsy. Meanwhile, so-called Mike so-called Jones boomed like a big ol bear: > i soak up the splendidly warped sounds of os mutantes as i get sinister fr > the first time. Oh, *terrific*. At every stage of my life, in every place I live, theres another bugger with my bleedin monicker. When I worked at a certain sprawling chemical complex in West Cumbria, there were no few than *three* Michael Joneses in my _department_. Sinister: bombs, robberies, free meals and wanking

We asked if they were going to look on the second floor and the basement... they checked their watches with worried faces and said no, ummm, they thought they'd... errr, leave. We got to go across the street for lunch on the bank. After a while the manager reckoned it might be safe to go back, but we kept taking turns telling him how worried we were. Finally 3 o'clock bank closing came around and we felt a lot braver and returned to balance out and go home. If you get robbed, the bank buys you a nice dinner. My worst job, when I was a student, was in one of those free-standing film kiosks in a shopping center parking lot. They always get robbed, and so you go through robbery training periodically. I was asked, "what do you do if someone asks for all the money?" and I said, "give it to them and ask, would you like some nice, fresh FotoMat film?" I think that was the wrong answer. Once in awhile there would be a seedy character hanging around when I'd have to take the money to the bank night deposit. Calls to the police asking for a patrol car to drive by to protect me never resulted in anything at all as they were always "too busy." But one night a guy came by and ...enjoyed himself ... all over the windowcounter. There was never any wanking training so I wasn't sure what to do -- but I called the police while he was... pleasuring himself... and they sent 3 patrol cars, a motorcycle cop and a van. They didn't catch the guy nor did they clean up his mess. Fine public servants we have in this day and age. I wonder what the bank would give you for a deposit like that? Sorry for the ramble -- but blame it on Joss, who should be a lot wiser than to go looking for bombs. My father was always accusing me of being hysterical based on the music I listened too. First it was rap that was the problem, then punk, then riot grrrl...by the time he tried to say "indie rock" was making me petulant I learned to laugh at him. Although reading the sad posts on here somedays I wonder if there are subliminal messages. The past year or so I've been bitter in love, kissing as a game, competiting for attention instead of affection, and generally letting low self esteem be ill repaired with sexual gratification. Yet I fall in love and feel hurt so easily. Bleh. I met a Sinister boy at a party Saturday. His name is John (hello!) and he was doing a lovely job of turning off the bad techno music in favor of mixing the Wedding Present. We started chatting, I was drunk for three days at that point, and I was so charmed by his glasses and foppish manner about music. I'm also reminded what a brit-popper I haven't been for a while. I will be travelling to the East Coast June 8-18th so if there are any Sinister folk in the Philadelphia/NJ/NY area I would love to meet up. I am actually going to take care of a friend whose grandfather is dying. She was raised by her grandparents and is only 20. She's never had anyone close to her pass away. I feel like there is so much I need to take care of here and in my life, but sometimes you have to put that aside for your friends. I went to a lovely party last night. A belated birthday party for Morrissey's 40th. DJ only Smith's records. Serve white cake with chocolate icing and almond slivers. Rent the Smith's live video compilations. Photocopy photos of Moz and paste rose petals all around. Steal red carnations from Thriftway and hand them out to the guests to stick in their back pockets. Make Morrissey masks and glue them on cardboard with popsicle sticks. Serve red wine, pink wine, and champagne. Burn lots of candles. Have a karaoke session. I've never done that on an impulse buy, usually I'd see them and save up and fret and then go back and find them sold. Someone was talking about having their heart broken last night and I totally related, because I also put my heart on the line last night, also with my best friend. She and I talked for a while, I found out what her concerns about us going out were and no doors were shut. We're not together, but we are, and we're still friends. I think the best part is that there are still possibilities. My language is not as eloquent, nor my life as exciting as some of us on the list, but when I think of all I have shared with this girl, belle and sebastian is a major part of it. Juniper: >I've just seen the saddest thing. A squirrel with no tail! This is also known as a rat. Rather a bizarre event occurred last Friday. Some cretin called the helpdesk in our office to say that he'd planted a bomb in our building which would explode in 30 minutes. He went on to point out how we would all die horribly before ending his call. So naturally, everyone left the building and the police were called. The police, in their wisdom, decided that - since there was still 15 minutes before the alotted time - they would like some volunteers to sweep the building for suspect packages/devices. Being not-at-all-dimwitted, I agreed, so 6 of us went running around the 4 floors looking in bags and checking drawers until 6.45 arrived and we all had to run out and wait for the explosion. When it didn't happen, we were almost immediately told it was safe to reassume our positions deskside and the police cruised off. It does seem strange that they'd have the public look for bombs, though, doesn't it. And when it didn't go off in exactly 30 minutes everything was suddenly fine and safe.
