So said Pete... -- Christ, mate - not even the go-go dancers in Wigan wear pasties on their nipples. Meat pies, maybe, but I don't think any of them have sunk as low as pasties yet. Oh, the joy of words that mean different things at different sides of the pond. I suppose my pervious statement (and hence previous post on the subject) deserves some explanation. For those of you not used to going to the pie shop and ordering a pastie on a friday for lunch, a pastie (over here at least) is a sort-of pretender to the throne of the all-conquering meat pie. It's essentially a pastry wrapping around a filling of meat and potato or cheese and onion, and it comes in two main forms, "cornish" or "puff". A Cornish pastie has your average inch-and-a-half thick, solid as a rock pastry round it, and Puff Pasties have kind of more of a filoux (referred to as "puff") pastry. -- This is all very well and good but it only begs the question (well in my mind anyhoo) "What do you call the little things UK go-go dancers wear over their nipples?" I'm not about to go look at any UK stripping sites to find out either, what fun would that be. I think the closest thing we have to puff pasties are spanikopitas, very delicious spinach pies of Greek/Med. origin. This sounds like the UK version of the wrapped savory dish though a la egg rolls, burritos, knishes, ravioli, gyros, etc. So I'm to understand the go-go dancers in Wigan are of low quality over there? Perhaps some Wigan dancers on the list would like to defend themselves...? (I'm not holding my breath) I think I remember in my young non-global mind thinking Big Country were really really strange. "They're Scottish? But...they have a black guy in it!" (I thought only the US and Africa were privy to black populations....this was before I knew about imperialism and the like...or before my mind could handle such a mind-blowing concept as a black person with a Scottish accent) I don't think I even liked them the first time around. Man, I was so stupid then. But weren't we all. Now, bring on the Proclaimers reunion to accompany the apocalypse... All the original score of this soundtrack was composed by Nick Cave, Mick Harvey and Blixa Bargeld and it was performed by an amazing orchestra of violins, violas, bass and cellos. Just beautiful! It worthies every cent I spent on it. Oh, and what about the movie? I haven't seen it but I'm dying to do it although I know it will never be released around here. Anyone saw it? Okay, I'm going now. i've not been in a very good mood lately, it rained, and there has been that lust factor to deal with, and i'm tired all the time and i just don't know what i'm talking about anymore. ummmmm Tweedykes is going splendidly, we already had 7 members at last count. hooray. Just for the record, i never liked the word "dyke" before either. mainly because it used to be yelled at me by boys on the sidewalk, for some unknown reason, amybe because i wore a bulky german camoflage jacket and had floppy hair with no makeup. at any rate, i have no idea where the word came from. i guess the '20's, or somewhere around there. when it was all fashionable to be a 'dyke'. yes it was. Natalie Barney and all them. anyway. i just use the word when i'm feeling techy (a new word!!) or because i just thought Tweedykes sounded funny. I never wanted to be a Lezzzbee-unnn either, cos it sounded so ugly, like a disease. but it ought to be very pretty. it's a Greek island, you wouldn't mind vacationing there, right? very mediterranean. i'm not going to say "isobel is a better song writer than stuart" or what ever. i just like her songs. there is no real reason for it. i get tired of caring about cleverness or whether somehting is better or not. or whether it is hep, or not twee enough or too twee or fuck it all, anyway. i do think it's funny that isobel is a style guru. and didnt' we all know it. Kerchiefs are the new cargo pants. er, trousers. it will be nice to look forward to a new GW album, maybe it will be longer this time. yeah baby gentle waves all night long. i have felt EXTREMELY bitchy lately, and it shows. thanks to everyone who has egged me on. i'm okay with that, because i honor my own inner bitch and allow free expression in my daily life. and you all reap the benefits. today the only thing i accomplished was i drew a comic strip about Sassy Grammas, inspired by the runaway prostitute "tight butt" incident. when i scan it i'll show everyone the way who just really enjoys those fucking promos every 5 seconds of their day, and thinks al lwe need is more julia roberts in ignorant films. here is an oxymoron for you: "the best romantic comedy in years" um, i dont' think so. i dont' even comprehend that statement. what are people, retarded? they just keep buying the same damn thing every year. big monsters eat people, yeah okay! heres' our money!! let's go to mcdonalds and get the sunglasses!! hello fellow rubies, it's the Kinsta here with some questions and comments. Was reading an article Honey put up (a LOOONG time ago) from the Scotsman circa the time our heroes won the Brits, and it said Stu has a song called "Lisa Helps the blind". HUH??? I have heard nearly all their rare/unreleased stuff by now (bar new Bowlie stuff) and have never heard of such a song. Did it change names? or is it genuinely a rare and unheard of song? Does anyone have it? Also, do any listees know how to transfer mp3's to CD or tape??? I'm preparing myself for the Y2K hit (am i silly?) and want to save all my precious mp3's!!! Please help:) Also, have been desperately searching for this rare song: Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds with Scott Walker (how great is that?): "I threw it all away" from the "to Have and To Hold" soundtrack. Am unwilling to buy a soundtrack just for one song (way too poor for that!) but does any listee have it, or have heard it? I've just watched one of the most AMAZING episodes on tv ever. "The Wish" from "Buffy". While this show is by now universally accepted as THE BEST SHOW ON TELLY!, this episode was so great on so many levels, not many episodes have touched me like this since the episode where Madeleine was killed by Leland Palmer in "Twin Peaks". Am extremely pissed off "Buffy" was neglected at the Emmys save for technical stuff. Sarah Michelle is so obviously the BEST actress working on telly today and her show is definitely of classic status now. BAH! what do those fogies at the Emmys know huh? hello all my cheeky cherubs... i've been forced to lift my head up from my lurking state to comment on tribute albums...hang on i'd better do this properly.... TRIBUTE ALBUMS probably the best tribute album i've heard is a spacemen 3 one that came out on rocket girl a little while back...it came in a black cardboard box with the spacemen 3 symbol in silver & it came with a keyring! these small touches mean alot to me ! anyway it features the likes of , bowery electric mogwai arab strab low & piano magic... to name just a few...i realise spacemen 3 may not be everybodys cup of tea... but this is a very good album ...well thought out ...& its always good to hear other peoples interpretations of a band that has obviously influenced them...which i think this is...+ a spacemen 3 keyring!!!!! what more could you want. the joy division tribute album '' a means to an end '' is ok but i was a little bit disappointed.( probably 'cos there was no keyring. ) BLAIR WITCHIPOO speaking as someone that got scared watching Carry on Screaming...( i was only 10 or 11 at the time but these things scar you for life ) i don't think it would be a good idea if i watched this film. PHANTOM MENACE is it my imagination or have i overdone it on the iceberg slim books ( currently reading Long White Con ) but principal character jar jar binks has the best pimp walk ever... B & S my grandmother thinks i'm in belle & sebastian..., being quite an open minded old lady ...she likes to hear what us younger people are listening to...and i often play her stuff that i'm currently listening to...anyway i happened to play her b&s one time...and she said '' is that your band my son '' 'cos she knows i'm in a band...i haven't played her any of our stuff 'cos i don't want to scare her...& i said '' no nan its belle & sebastian '' to which she said '' is that the other people in your group...'' she's a little hard of hearing ...well she is 98...so i left it at that...& she looked rather proud of me. if it makes an old lady happy what harm is done. anyway you crazy kids ...i've taken up far too much of your valuable time...for which i apologise ..., i may make an appearance at tigermilking ...i'm thinking about coming in costume ...i'll either come as : 1) Elvis ... CHASING AMY: i wrote a poem about this movie. i've never actually seen it, but it has traumatized me in ways mere mortals cannot possibly understand. Let's say this, the stuff in the movie could concevably happen to someone somewher ein the world. But the very fact of its existence--and then, its being embraced as some sort of cultural phenomenon--purports to make a sweeping statement of it. Not to mention that it's a movie seen as dealing with "lesbians" that is actually written by a heterosexual male, which says more about said male than anything else. so i have problems with that movie, not so much the movie than with the fact that people seem to watch the movie expecting to be educated about something. When i workshopped my chasing amy poem in class, one girl wrote a comment on my paper saying that she had just watched the film, and "learned a lot about lesbianism". NOT!!! it's a movie about a narcissistic guy and his slutty girl troubles. GROW UP_!!!! okay anyway i got that out of my system. I was quite surprised to hear that the acid house soundtrack came out on Tuesday. I got my copy weeks ago from vinyl exchange in Manchester. Anyways the track is Slow graffiti.
