Sinister: The Poetry Parrot Drank My Liquor and Shit on my Library

Well List... I prefer the lurking thing. I hear Martin Robinson has made it safely back to the shores of Britain -- we were sorry to miss him in New York. But, we toasted him with a glass or two and after a bit it seemed he was with us anyhow. Before leaving the UK, Martin sent the Poetry Parrot on ahead. It arrived bedraggled and forlorn at my door, really no more than a sodden bunch of feathers. I picked it up gently and wrapped it in a fluffy towel. When I felt how it was shivering from the transatlantic flight I gave it a tiny sip of brandy. It seemed to perk him up so I gave him a bit more. How was I to know he had a weakness? Well, before long my booze was all gone and the Parrot was hanging off the curtain rods reciting the most vulgar and rude limericks I've ever heard -- that is when he wasn't singing maudlin songs or shouting at the cats to "haul on the bowline." (I suspect he has a past, this Poetry Parrot, and it wasn't in the halls of academia.) It was a long few weeks. I asked for his help in choosing a poem, got down a stack of books and tried a few out on him. His comments ranged from "fucking drug addict can't write for shit -- damn hippie" in a HopkinsVoice -- to what sounded like "she'sawhore" in a croaky imitation of a raven when I suggested Emily Dickenson. It didn't help that he'd landed on my neighbor's head when he said the latter, and then apologized to her by bowing in that drunken formal way, saying, "scuse me lady, I thought you had a bust." Finally, I packed him off to rehab. He should be getting out about now and I've instructed them to send him along to Damon Seils who hopefully will get better guidance from him than I did, now that he's sobered up. The Parrot, not Damon. So, in any event, this is the poem I chose... it is by Jane Kenyon who lives in New Hampshire. It isn't much, but I like it. Insomnia The almost disturbing scent of peonies presses through the screens, and I know without looking how those heavy white heads lean down under the moon's light. A cricket chafes and pauses, chafes and pauses, as if distracted or preoccupied. When I open my eyes to document my sleeplessness by the clock, a point of greenish light pulses near the ceiling. A firefly . . . In childhood I ran out at dusk, a jar in one hand, lid pierced with airholes in the other, getting soaked to the knees in the long wet grass. The light moves unsteadily, like someone whose balance is uncertain after traveling many hours, coming a long way. Get up. Get up and let it out. But I leave it hovering overhead, in case it's my father, come back from the dead to ask, "Why are you still awake? Sigh, So once again I am, we (we; being the fair citizens of perth australia), are the victims of living in a small, out of the way, culturally unimportant backwater province. Ok so we are not alone, I hear the cries of the ignored masses in places like Bumfluff, Gwent when Kiss refuse to bring their 2hour, 3stage lightshow and pigsblood spectacular to their 300capacity community hall, but godammit we deserve to be entertained as well. Ok so this whining is all too common, tired already are you? So who has jilted Perth you may or may not ask. Ben Lee. Ok so he was only here 6months ago. But there was a part of me that was hoping that it was just gonna be him and his cute little acoustic guitar this time. No one wants to hear your wanky new pseudo-groove direction, no one wants to hear half of your last album all I want to do is let go of a tear as you begin to strum and sing "Eight years old I was in love with a girl...". I had the whole afternoon planned, afternoon yes I was going to the underage show! Who needs alcohol when you can be intoxicated with the passion of youth(And i don't mean that in a sexual way you filthy mind). I had my pink Dolly t-shirt picked out, my Miss Muffet handbag and matching hair clips so that I would fit in with the indiekids. And Ben was even gonna bring a decent opening act this time Alex Lloyd, no more of those wankers from Gerling who only have one catchy song and 10 other sonic regurgitations. Now I will have to be content with listening to my mogwai cd on the 27th of this month. Anyway just a rant that I needed to get out. It probably want make much sense to anyone outside of Australia. Done now. << Has anyone translated the Brazilian messages yet?>> I was an exchange student to Brazil a few years ago (an opportunity I HIGHLY recommend to anyone even remotely interested in ahem, studying abraod. Especially if youre a miserable 16 yr old from a shitty little town in the northeast where Perkins is the local latenite hotspot, and youre up for some legal binge drinking in a foreign country, not that I did that, but its still nice to have the chance) And I was saying, I was in brazil and can now confidently lie about my fluent Portuguese on job application so I took it upon myself to translate the first message. To summarize, it was a story about this wise old man and this other little weisenheimer who decides to test the wise old mans wiseness. So the second guy gets this bird and hides it in his hand and goes to the old guy and says something like ok smartass, what am I hiding in my hand? And the wise old man says a little bird so the weisenheimer says, yeah but is it dead or alive? And the sage says, well thats really up to you. you have the decision to create the future or something to that effect. (I think the weisenheimer had rigged the test so no matter what the old guy guessed hed be wrong.) Then theres a load of blethering about God and how you control your fate and happpiness etc etc. basically, its one of those feel good chain-mail religious messages. Like the one about the lady who buys the sexy lingerie and saves it for a special time then before you know BOOM! Shes dead and never got to wear it, so the moral is live life to the fullest and dont put off telling people you love them. So thats what I got from the Portuguese message, and Im absolutely certain Im approximately 10% correct My head hurt too much to go on to the 2nd one. My aunt has just gotten hooked to the net and is travelling the information superhighway She even has a yahoo mail account, which she makes great use of to forward aforementioned feel good chainmail, on like, an hourly basis. It was cute at first (Oh look! She really thinks shell win a trip to disneyland if she forwards this message to 16 people! Haha silly woman), but now Im getting annoyed like, let me break it down for you honey, there aint no little girl in Arkansas with cancer whos getting 1 cent each time this e-mail is forwarded, and Ive received this Darwin Awards joke only about 63 times in the past week, bitch! but then I recall my own e-mail infancy, and the glee I felt after sending the so-called secret neiman marcus chocolate chip cookie recipe" to anybody I knew with e-mail, and I forgive her. Finally, I dont post that often, but I have to say its a little unfair for all you people dissing the company behind ATP. Its not entirely their fault they couldnt sell enough tickets and had to cancel. (Aside from not booking better/more bands and holding it at a better time, I mean.) But really, how about some vitriol directed at all the people who posted messages saying, Oh well its too bad All tomorrows parties is cancelled, that is so UNFAIR!! it SUCKS!!! well Im just glad I didnt buy tickets anyway. ???? Oh, wait, has anybody seen mogwai live in the US? Are they selling those nasty blur shirts? tata, tara PS. By the way, anybody who is in San Francisco and interested in some bargains, I at Streetlight records on Market Street the other day and butter my bottom and call me muffin if I didnt find a whole bunch of knockout sale stuff. Upstairs, on the second floor area underneath the rack of CD singles and in boxes on the floor are many copies of B&S Eps marked down. Speaking of how soon is now, i saw a Nissan car ad that had teh beginnign of that song as background, i was very puzzled by that, "Nissan, the car of whiny shut-in's everywhere" now that's a good ploy. speaking of whiny shut-ins, >;) Sarah who is secretly in love with me, suggested kahimi karie songs. i think i'll stick with my "lolitapop dollhouse" for all my Karie needs, whilst i like the song very much, her ultra breathy voice in large doses grates on my nerves. screwy, aint it? someone said that if isobel were vegan, she would be too perfect and might explode, and that made me laugh a lot for whatever reason. so PROPS to whoever you were, that was a couple days ago. L-PEOPLE'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB POST ************* I'd like to send comfort to Lauren of the broken heart sinistar sisterhood we both appear to comprise. i'd commend you dear for your consideration of the ladies, but in my own experience i'd have to say you'll be at no lesser risk of heartbreak than with boys. but will that stop me? HELL NO!! at least maybe this will help, that you were not the only one bawling your eyes out in a public place at night and getting odd looks. i was out riding my bicycle for somewhere to eat and i just started crying for no apparent reason and had to go home empty handed because i kept seeing couples kissing on the street and it made me cry harder. And i went home and called, guess who? the source of all my tragic lot. but i didn't go over because she said ppl were coming and i only wanted to talk to her alone. But don't sigh, my dear, your lot can surely not be any worse than mine, at least you were not rejected simply because you lack what i'l call for now a "winky". speaking of winkies, last night i was at the big ole dyke fest we call a womens group, we met at a coffee place and during the discussion this huge steaming winky of a guy came up and began counting us on his fingers, someone asked why he was counting us, he said something to the effect of whenever that many women were together, we must be some kind of feminist group or soemthing, someone else asked "why would you think that?" to which he made some idiotic gesture inferring "LIKE< DUH!!!" then he said that he wanted to make sure we weren't a "coven". Fucking moron. and he started to walk away, and i yelled out "i'm a witch!!" and raised my hand, and said i would put a hex on him. we decided he was just intimidated by our ferocious convergence of female energy, and he was in deathly fear for his precious winky. Asshole. KISS ME, KISS ME KISS ME i was just going to recount this dream i had last night, or today or wathever. i think Jess was there. and someone announced that there was to be a show of Pavement, and Belle and sebastian too, so we hurried off to someone's house, a tiny little room and waited. but no show happened. we waited. we thought maybe it was a music video shoot. i asked the owner of th house where the bathroom was and he showed me donw into the basement which was full of toys and furnitre and things, and it was all dark and stuff, i saw this person sneaking around and got kinda scared and called out who's there, then suddenly many many ppl jumped out in costume and circus gear, and yelled "surprise!!!" And one of the ppl was stuart m, he took off his disguise and started to greet the attendants in the front, when he got to me he hugged me and kissed me on the lips, and thanked me for something. when he pulled away from kissing me he raised his eyebrows, like "that was good" or something. my face got all red and i had to cover it and i felt like i would burst of embarrassment, cos everyone was laughing in envy at me, almost all fo the ppl who had come were teeny girls who thought struan was the bomb, so they were all jealous, some of them even cried because they didnt' get to kiss him, and one girl came up and wanted to hug me because i had touched him. His lips were very soft, though, i guess he was a good kisser, even if it was only a peck on the lips. oh and the other parts of the dream, involved me sleeping wiht some girl i had known for 2 days, and my dad trying ti get me to take my clothes off because someone said i looked like John lennons' wife, and my mom dressed as a nun and singing songs that i had written, which was quite traumatic to me. i wish i could remember the song cos it was really rather brilliant, an imaginary listee named heather had written teh lyrics, and i finished it and put it to music, and it was really quite good. 'heather' was jealous of stuart kissing me, too. OH! i almost forgot the most important part. at the wimmens group, this one girl asked what my Study at Stow shirt said, then she asked if i knew teh group belle and sebastian, i said Hell yeah, i met them! and we made a few comments, she said that she loves them and was quite envious i got to see tehm in concert, maybe that was the source of my dream? anyway it was the first time i've met someone who knew B&S so it was really a milestone. I miss artgirl and her incredible sexual vibe. if she could ever love me.....right now, right here! OK I'll admit it I'm jealous as hell of all those of you who are gathering in london right now. I want to be there. I want to see you all. But I can't so thats that. I can do something for you all though, cos many sinisterites should have been staying in lovely chalets this weekend but now cant. Well take heart cos I am living in a chalet for the next year and so I will occupy it for all those of you who had tickets for ATP and I'll listen to cool music all weekend (speaking of which I bought the marine research album yesterday, very nice indeed) Also does anyone mind if I publicly thank sarah and ailsa for being so cool when I was in glasgow and lending me money to get home and finding me a place to sleep. I'd ote for you both on the list crush site except I'm sure you dont want a vote from an ugly fool like me. Oy oy saveloy..... The "Christopher Timothy Experience" (and there's a name for a band if ever I heard one) continues, don't you know. I was late for the train this morning, through ignorance, weakness, or my own deliberate fault, so had to catch one that I don't normally get. Anyway, I sit down on the platform, do a roll-up (which was part of the curriculum in our school for B.A.G.A. level 3 gymnastics), and happen to glance at the bloke sitting next to me. Yes, you've guessed it - it was the one, the only, Mr. James Herriot again. I thought for a short while of trying to apologise for my previously drunken behaviour at the Saint Trinians night, but I didn't, for one reason. Have you any idea how hard it is to keep a straight face when you're sitting next to someone who: a) is dead, dead, famous b) met you last when you had "SLUT" written in lipstick on your forehead, and c) has been seen by Ian having rampant anal sex with an Orang-utan?? Well?? Have you?? Hmmmm. Thought not. It's bloody hard, let me assure you. So, not wanting to make even more of a tit of myself than I undoubtedly already have to this particular celebrity geezer, I hauled my convulsively giggling self into the other side of the carriage and kept well away. Probably best, I reckon. On the Jysaw-Dave-raised question of indie-cool, I tend to think that doing things just because they're "cool" is just a bit pointless, really. Pointless because "cool", like most other things in life (thank-you Mr. Einstein) depends entirely on frame-of-reference, on perception. As my mum used to say, "One man's meat is another man's mustard", which, even though it is one of the worlds most tenuous analogies, does have some truth to it. What you think is "cool" may get you universally laughed at by other groups in society. So why bother? Do what *YOU* want to do. Wear what *YOU* want to wear. Listen to what *YOU* want to hear. And that's to say at all that you should only do all that if it happens to be non-conformist. If what you want to do is completely MOR, but it happens to be your own particular scene, your style, your movie, then that's great. IMHO, there's nothing worse than people not being themselves.
