Hello Sinister, Well, here's another one straight out the darkness of the nursery. I've been following the list for some time now but never could find the courage to join in the witty stuff you've been used to for ages. This could be because it seems that there are so many people from Anglo-Saxon countries on the list. For me, being a Dutch boy, is sometimes scary. However, after reading your posts, I think I could fit in. So, this is me: Matthijs, a 28-year old boy from Amsterdam. Off course I love music; lots of it. Luckily Amsterdam has some good places for life music (Paradiso, Melkweg). Paradiso was where I saw B&S in 1998. After hearing the records (TBWTAS and IYFS) I was lost. Such good composed music. In the Netherlands the word 'twee' is unknown. I must look-up the translation somewhere. According to your posts, 'twee' is a sort of lifestyle. Am I right? See you next time! Sinister: i love crack!

Daniel Johnston? ****'That' single**** Not sure if I approve of this latest development in B&S titling. I mean now they're smuttifying their own songs there's nothing left for us to do. 'Slap Your Cock Around' seems strangely prescient (it wasn't me who made that up, by the way, whoever put © my name a while ago). Mind you, they started it, what with 'Cock Fun' and all. Maybe we can call it 'Judy Has A Cat Nap' instead. I certainly don't approve of having to pay about 7 quid for four tracks and an extended dick slap. As I understand it, 'Legal Man' is a group collaboration mainly written by Stevie. The lunatics have taken over the asylum. Someone asked what they thought the best song on the album would be. I reckon 'The Chalet Lines' might take it. 'I Fought in a War' is bound to be a wistful affair, starting the album with Stuart's wispy unaccompanied tones, if previous form is any guide. It will be OK, but no 'The State I Am In'. 'Beyond the Sunrise' is sure to be epic in sound and scope. I can't wait. I kind of understand what Joe means when he calls 'Late Night, Maudlin Street' epic. A contributor to 'Smiths Indeed' (the Sinister of its day? Not really) once lamented what he saw as Morrissey's dwindling politicism and quoted that song as an example. He said it was a sign of Morrissey switching to an uncommitted, documentary style of lyric, as if he was now on the outside looking in. I didn't really agree with this, but it is tempting to see the song as the centerpiece of the album, Morrissey closing a chapter on his own involvement in the world he describes. I am moving house, a half-life disappears today. What does 'epic' mean nowadays? How can we have an epic in our times? A broad, sweeping work that defines our civilisation; where we're from and where we are? Come off it. When people talk of 'Loveless' as epic, I think they really just mean monumental. There are very few examples of this kind of work that impress me. Somehow you have to have the authority to carry it off, and maybe Kevin Shields just about has. The rest of the shoegazing pack didn't. They just seemed like silly middle class boys and girls who thought it was terribly modern to drown whatever tunes they had in effects pedals. 'Tomorrow Never Knows' seems to be the template for all this, and much as you might resent him as a pampered wife-beating swine, when John Lennon did it it really mattered. I think I'm just embarrassed by the whole indie scene, and believe that it is at it's best when it's concentrating on the small, the detail. Maybe that's what some call anorexic, or unambitious. But it fits somehow. There's a defiant thrill to be had in the small making the big look overblown and stupid. God, next I'll be supporting Man City. Look, I don't know. I just don't think pop music is an appropriate vehicle for the BIG. I'd sooner read a book or watch a film. > Goth? Maybe. Sounds was a bit more gothic, wasn't it? Nah, Sounds was more metal. MM definitely put the Cure on the front cover an awful lot, and was preferred by the Mission fans in my school. MM liked shoegazing more too. Anything a bit 'arty'. The NME was always more P!O!P!, cynical and posture-puncturing, which I appreciated at the time. That was the way I saw it in the late 80s and early 90s, anyway. I was impressed with MM's 2-part interview with Morrissey in 1988 though. (Can't remember the writer's name. Something very ordinary like Dave or Alan). At that age (14) it struck me as the most intelligent piece of music journalism I'd ever read. I must have another look at it. ....Hi. I never thought. I never thought that... people really did get attacked for cheering for the wrong team in a pub. Something along the lines , of : "this is a manchester city pub, what ya fookin cheerin fo la baaaaaaaaaaaaassssssssss...........etcetcetc" punch, punch, cement. Wander off. O' course, the man city fan accent is an appaling reproduction using severel local dialects melded together like a happy family. Just for the record. Worksop is ace. Worksop always will be ace. And twee, full of lovely people, with bunnies on small red tee-shirts. And flowers. I dont recall ever eating a rose. They look very nice. The colour certainly looks very nice. Nice. The most first-post-profound-ness thing I can think of is to say : "Dont put your hands or face [or anything else] near , or more specifically, down, badger holes, or rabbits for that matter, dont go near them, you. Will. Only. End. Up. Getting. Hurt. Maybe'' straight to the point, non? The maybe is quite usefull, as you never have to get around having no opinion, you make suggestions, maybe. First, I must give George Henry Dickie applause for bringing back the 'art of typing'. Which reminds us -it's not what you say, but how you say it.- Not that subliminal Cyndi Lauper (sp? either way I like the y and i switched) isn't accepted. More and more sitting in sini-chat I think about the placement of list members. !. What is the maximum amount of us that live in one building? @. Are there any illegal aliens among us?? #. Is there a Japanese soul on the list??? $. How many of us have falling cd collections with attempted towers and how many of us have sophisticated rows parallel to our stereos???? %. If we all were gathered in one geographical space would we have as much effect on the outside world????? ^. Would we become a pirate legend and forever be the lost island of POP Pagans?????? Maybe so ........ Are there any Beach Boy fans on the list? Am I a hopeless listener if I think Carl Wilson and company are great? I know they are a little (make that a lot) more American than most bands people worship on this list. Just thought I'd throw that in, I just felt an absence of their work. I came home early one day last week, I think it was friday, and to my amazement, on itv, was a kids tv program called dog and duck, about, wait 4 it, a dog and duck. A DOG ON WHEELS and a talking duck. exactly like the dog on wheels I used to have, with a red handle thing, but mine couldn't talk or nod it's head. which was a pity. they always went quiet when someone entered the room. like a twee toy story. people were discussing indie culture recently. well I pride myself in not being part of any kind of culture - I am UNCULTURED. yoghurt has more culture than me. but really, I think it is wrong of people to close themselves off to meeting other people just cause they like a certain sorta music. music is JUSTmusic. that's all. although, for some people, it's a bible by which they live their lives, and you hear cries of "what a fuckin' stinkin' mosher" from one side, and "arsehole trendies neds, bastards" from the other. I just think it's appalling. saying that, though, I got mistaken for a goth/glam person last week, as I was attacked in school with glitter glue stuff, all over my face, and made julian clary look tame, and when I had to go into town aftewards, I walked by the moder art gallery, and the stuff hadn't washed off, and some goth(ish) girls were staring at me, so I just said "what, I'm no bleeding glam rocka, what ARE you looking at?" tahnks very much people for the bids for the auctioned records. You raised £150 for a really good cause. however, on the subject of sexual favours from cover girl erica, I did get some mails, offering unrepeatablwe services in exchange for the signed tigermilk record ;). We are making our year book at school now, and I'm kinda stuck on a couple of the questionaire answers. 1) quote for the year - I want something very AMOOZING, with a touch of style, and crazyness. 2) wittiest chat up line. Sinister: Freakin' out in my moonage daydream...

So it's been a couple of months since I last posted--a few people sent me some ugly, "watch yer ass, new boy," messages that sent me cowering in the corner for weeks. Anyway, I'm going to barrel my way back into the world o' messages, inch by inch, regardless of rude messages and frightening threats... Saw Looper and the Lips last Friday. Looper exceeded my expectations, but only because I tried not to hold my expectations too high. They didn't get much of a reaction from the crowd, as they were late hitting the stage and, well, this is Missouri. The visuals were...interesting, but not up to par with others I've seen (the Lips' crazy videos definitely blew Stu and Co. out of the water). Still, I enjoyed the new songs, and Stuart was as kind and loveable as he presents himself in song. He mentioned that they were playing a song that they had never tried live before--can't recall the name now, but I do remember that it was one of my favorites from the set..."<something> Johnston," perhaps? Help me out, fans... In other news, is anyone else still doing backflips over Virgin's Bowie re-releases? I got into David in the twilight of the Rykodisc era, and by the time I was ready to start buying up every bit of Bowie booty *POOF* the Ryko CDs were gone. When they were pulled, THEY WERE PULLED. I went through so much hell trying to find used copies and what-have-you, but never had too much luck. So now, about three years later, I can finally go and blow what little dough I have filling out the rest of my collection. I'm about 3/4 of the way there, and not in too much of a hurry to get anything past "Scary Monsters." I know that a lot of people have been complaining about the lack of the bonus tracks that were present on the Ryko CDs, but I actually like these releases better--there's no sense on having tracks tacked onto the end of "Ziggy Stardust"--that totally defeats the purpose. On the list mummy's advice I did a search for "dick slap" and... well my GOODNESS!! Well, maybe not goodness of the regular sort. Makes you long for the days when an Arab Strap was considered racy around here. Don't look children, is my advice. Especially not you, BabyChris. I don't think the League of Decency would approve, and the spelling is atrocious. Is there really someone named "Ben Dover" making porn with housewives in the UK? This one was pretty good though... something to offend everyone. I especially recommend it to Miss Starry who does love Homey Talk. I assume "dick slap" is in there someplace.
