What's the first sign of madness? Growing hairs on the palm of your hand? Hunting high and low for your specs while they're on the top of your head? Or HEARING VOICES? The other night, being thoroughly worn out and in desperate need of some beauty sleep, I brushed my teeth, pulled on my pyjamas and climbed into bed, wrapping the duvet round me to make a snuggly caterpillar of myself. I shut my eyes and awaited Mr Sandman. Suddenly, through the darkness, I heard something. No words, only the sibilance of a whisper, which continued for several minutes. At first I thought it was robbers in the back garden, come to moider me in my bed, but then I realised the sound was coming from inside my room. Mice? Surely not - they live in the kitchen and living room but, as far as I'm aware, they haven't mastered the stairs yet. And besides, these noises were too hooman. Maybe it was a ghost. There's a presence outside the cellar door, of this I am certain. But it's a cold and eerie presence, not warm and snuggly like my bedroom. Only one explanation remained - the voices were the product of my mind. Cripes, I thought to myself, this is most strange. I sat up in bed and thought about things for a while and the whispering continued. Were these good voices or evil? Would they tell me to blow up the Houses of Parliament or just to run naked through the streets of Harringay? As I waited for an answer, I started to hear snatches of music. Now this was weird - were the voices trying to inspire me into putting my (ahem) talent as a saxophonist to good use by forming a Kenny G-inspired indie soopergroop? Or, when crossing my bombsite of a bedroom in the dark, had I KICKED THE PLAY BUTTON ON MY MINIDISC AND WAS I SCARING MYSELF SILLY FOR NO REASON WHATSOEVER? I think you know the answer. Ho hum. Lately, I've been thinking that I might be able to make a bit of cash accompanying tourists around the most delightful area of North London, the bit with the postcode N4, namely Harringay. Come Up The Passage Tours would, obviously, spend a good deal of time getting to know the famous Harringay Passage, widely considered the best place to acquire old sofas and shopping trolleys with locked wheels. Then, the group would stop off at the renowned pound shop, Moominland (true!), for inexpensive souvenirs such as mousetraps, fingerless gloves and Brillo pads. Finally, I'd take them to Sainsbury's to do a bit of celebrity spotting in the vicinity of the fish counter. Lixi, I looked out for you last night - were you hiding behind that big pile of crabs? Liquid refreshment would be provided by the Olde Ale Emporium, purveyors of Black Wych Stout (great stuff). Anyone interested? Hello Sinister, Hey look at me, I'm not at work. This is a very strange state of affairs which I'm not really used to dealing with. In fact, I havn't got a bloody clue what to do with myself. I've been to the shops, drank numerous cups of coffee and now what? Nieghbours isn't on far ages yet. Oh hang on, the pubs opened 10 minutes ago. That's me sorted. It makes me very nostalgic for my carefree(ish) studenthood. I suspect that having a wage has spolied me a bit. hmmm. So to everyone who is studying right now, ENJOY IT while you can, because things only go downhill from there. It's tue. I even joined a pension scheme the other day so that's the last remains of childhood firmly and finally signed off. *sob* uslessly howls: "but I'm only twenty two for chrissakes...." /me rallies against the system. bruises his knuckles, then falls over. good grief. The bestest ever thing I ever saw in the whole of the other day :: An oldish bloke sitting alone in town wearing a wolly hat and blowing bubbles with one of those small hoop and washing up liquid affairs. That was just the nicest thing. I wanted to go and talk to him but he looked so content I didn't dare to. Made me smile anyway. This is my classified ad: Anyone in the Leeds area wanna join/form a band? Go on, I know you do. I can do guitar/bass/word duties to suit and am a musical whore who will play in just about any genre you can think of. Yeh, it'll be fun, I promise. Love and a bundle brimming with no badness. Fabulous kiddielit (derogatory term which I'm reclaiming as of NOW). You should read all Joan Aiken's "Dido Twite" books as well if you haven't already, and anything by Diana Wynne Jones you can find, especially "Fire and Hemlock". It turns up in charity shops a lot. I love those Susan Cooper books. They're not at all patronising, a bit like The Famous Five with added mysticism and nastiness. A friend of mine set the poem-y thing that starts, "when the dark comes rising, six shall turn it back" to music for an A-level composition thingy, and it were dead good, like. Hi, After reading a few hundred sinister posts, which was quite a fun but strenuous task (especially since I went home from University for 2 days and come back with about 100 sinistermail to read), I have matured from being the bully in the nursery to be the smallest kid in middle school.. if I give you all my dinner money will you promise not to beat me up?? Please be nice to me :-))) I loved reading all these e-mails, Velocity is sLiGhTlY mEnTlE but I bet she is beautiful, she talked about currency in sinisterland and I think we should trade things in cans of RedBull, because 1. they're all quite regular in price - other drinks like cocacola varies from 24p a can to extortionate 80p, but R.B. are normally 1.15 (+-0.05) in price except for in clubs where they cost literally millions 2. they are worth loads of money 3. reading these e-mails it seems that everyone is weird and hyperactive like me, and drinking r.b. will make us all even more w&h. 4. it can keep us awake for longer to read sinistermail. as to a job in the village, I wanted to be taxi driver but someone took that job before I was old enough to drive (although I was Damon Hill on the toy car in the nursery) so I am out of the job... I think I'll just become the village outlaw renegade, much like the big bloke in the cheesy tv show "renegade", but instead of riding on a harley davidson I'll be on my go-ped which is much more cool. I really don't think sending a really boring mail like this is the best way to lose my virginity, cos my mum always say if I wait it'd be special... but it's too late cos honey's humorless computer had propositioned me with the notification e-mail <sob> but I really must stop now before any of you pass out. This may not really be necessary or even desired for that matter, but I just wanted to say goodbye to everyone I've ever talked to here on Sinister...although I will always love B&S, I feel I have no real connection to this list anymore so because of that I should unsubscribe. Although I enjoy the wit and humor of you kids, I don't have anything to contribute to the "village" or any of the other topics that have come up over the past month or so. In other words, I love B&S but I just don't think that's enough, either to benefit from the list or to benefit it. It's been a long and fun journey, and I'll miss you all.
