'the cult of ant and dec' and let me say it was absolutely fab and you should all go buy beg borrow or steal a copy. a classic. and i'd completely forgotton in the midsts of time one of the final singles 'better watch out', i can't think how, cos it really is wicked. i can picture the video in my head... and now i really have brought this list down to my unabashed pop kid level. i am truly sorry. my excuse is that i bought five's 'invincible' yesterday to round off my poptastic week and am feeling really happy about this and the fact that i've had The Best Weekend I Can Remember (well, apart from the footy....) and everything in the world is steptacular, and ooh i can't stop grinning. things are looking up, goddam. and the scream are playing reading!!! and the delgados are coming to oxford beginning of may, and hefner are playing sometime in april (paul> i managed to delete a load of my mails by mistake including yours so i haven't got you addy; can you get in touch again cos i've got all the info you wanted), beth orton's playing here, and brassy, and i'm going to gatecrasher and seeing idlewild again at the end of this month...i'm so excited! but also very skint....so, no more decent bands are allowed to play oxford until the summer, okay? though admittedly i could make an exception for a certain 7-piece close to our hearts.... and now, just to put the icing on the cake, my dad's about to put my dinner out (i can smell roast potatos, wicked!) so i will go stuff my face now. lovin' and leavin' you rachel xxx +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the undead Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail sinister(a)missprint.org. Hello there This day is Thursday, but Ill probably not send this till later. Its incredibly dark and brooding outside. Whos read Susan Coopers The Dark is Rising Sequence? I am almost finished and its dead good. I never like finishing books because I panic and cant think what Im going to do with my time. But I still read everything very fast, because I cant relax if Ive still got things to do. If I havent got things to do, Ill invent something. Like opening up all the plugs and cleaning inside them. You can never be careful enough when it comes to DIRT. <lixi stares madly around the room, with her mad starin eyes, thus becoming totally manic> Yesterday, I went to sleep at 4.30am, after drinking lots of Alco popsies and gin. Then got up at 10am. Fool. Then Starry and me went to an all weather pitch, which we had to climb through a fence to get into, as it was locked, and played netball. It rained and hailed, but we didnt care. Naturally, we are both fantastic netballists. Then we went to a childrens playground and sat on damp seesaws and stuff and got wet arses. It was fun. Except when I hung upside down from a swing and my hair trailed in a puddle. I had possibly the least successful evening flyering. The only people going into the gig were old boring folk. So I went and stood by the tube instead and got fucking freezing. And still didnt hand many out. But I did get to talk to freaks. And shake their hands. They enjoyed that, but far far too much. I felt soiled and had I been stood closer, I may well have been. Did I say that I got a job in Sainsburys? Can you start to imagine the excitement Im feeling? I dont think you can. Its Sunday now. Ive been writing letters all day and hanging clothes on clothes horses. Ive got my Sainburys uniform now, and I must say its rather stunning. Especially the quilted jacket. Mmhhm. Oooon, I would be privileged to be your English teacher. I have a lovely speaking voice, and my spelling is great. But I dont know if I want you to speak all nice and proper English, you might become boring like English people. Now I have to go, cos the bath is running over. Love lixi "Is it a bird? Jesus Christ! I just looked out of the window and the sky has gone the most amazing shade of pink. Imagine it now for a few seconds...................................................... ........................................................................there. Wasn't that good? I saw a pink car the other day. It was definitely gay. Instead of an alarm it just shouted "I"M FREE, I'M FREE, I'M FREE!" whenever anyone went near it. I think I saw a bloke fiddling with the exhaust. Could someone tell me how the tape tree works? Is it just people swapping tapes of their favourite music? I would really like to join in. Cos I like inflicting my music on other people and this morning it was making me cross that most of you lot who love music so much have probably never heard Dylan's "She's Your Lover Now". I would like you all to listen to the Silver Jews. Steve Malkmus from Pavement is on most of their records but they also sound very much like Lou Reed and a bit like Beck, if he had a soul. How I would like Beck to sound but he always disappoints me, even though I do like Sex Laws as a pop song. Sinister: virgin suicides /Sigur Ros plea

Attention sinistereenies:) Sorry for writing another trade request so soon again but I was inspired by Megan Lehar's rave about the new Air album. It sounds so fantastic! Does anyone who has Air's "Virgin Suicides" soundtrack and/or the Sigur Ros EP willing to make a CDR for me? I'm dying to hear it but do not think I'll have enough money to actually buy the album. so this will have to be the next best thing, i guess! In return I can tape them copies of Beth Orton, Primal Scream and Dot Allison's recent gigs in Perth (very good quality as well!), plus I have loads of rare/live/unreleased Tindersticks, Belle and Seb, Tanya Donelly, Belly, Kristin Hersh, Mercury Rev, Air, Beth Orton, Black Box Recorder, Palace, Hefner, Dot Allison, One Dove, Smog, Galaxie 500 and loads more (unfortunately, I do not have a CD burner, so the good old fashioned tape will just have to do!). Sinister: Drinking Strange Wine

Hello dear Sinister Siblings! The Sinister Village seems to be coming alone quite nicely and I think Portmerion would make a splendid local for the village. Well it seems as if many of the more exciting shops are spoken for, it also seems I have already have a job waiting for me as the Lovely Laura Llew wrote: "So far, I would love if the following would come & be residents of the book shop: Jim 'I'm so hip I have trouble seeing over my pelvis' Gilmer" ummm...I do believe that's a compliment but one can never be too sure. Well, I suppose I can take employment with Lil' Llew until I figure out what sort of shop (no, make that Shoppe) I want to open. Until then I can sit in Llew's bookstore sipping hot chocolate as I debate the wit and wisdom of Harlan Ellison with Lil' Llew. Ah, I have not only made another B&S convert this week but also converted someone to Jeff Noon and Harlan Ellison...the revolution continues apace. Has the village a video store yet? I can sling videos with the best of them, (Iwould of course have a massive cult section filled with indie films and foreign films and anime and anything else I can think of) or if there is a burning need for a breakfest cook then you need look no further. Or perhaps I could run the occult shoppe down the lane, filled with strange old books that moan in dead languages when you open them? As you can tell I'm up for anything... Someone (apologies, I forget who) was brilliant enough to mention The Prisoner, which was the most dead brilliant television show I've ever seen. It was with much glee that I found a local shop that rents the old episodes and managed to complete my collection. I also must agree that Portmerion would make a perfect local for our Sinister Village and must bring up pennyfarthings. The Sinister Village must have pennyfarthings because I think that would be just the twee-est (and I think pennyfarthings look cool, though I'd never in a million years try to ride one). Awhile back Erica mentioned that we should all listen to "Playground Love" by AIR, and it is with much shame that I admit I hadn't heard of AIR until several fine sinister people brought it up. So I was looking for them in Harmony House only to find them under techno...nothing wrong with that but I suspected that it might not be my cup of tea so I put off buying it. Well, of course I later heard the MP3 of "Playground Love" and was floored by it, absolutly astounded. It's brilliant and I rushed out to snatch up the album. So the moral of the story...when Erica says go out and listen to a bloody song you damn well do it, it's for your own good it is. Nick said: "I've just got a promo copy of the new Delgados album, called 'The Great Eastern', which has brightened my day. I didn't even know there was one on the way. It's great what you can find in the Guardian music editor's bin." The Delgados are another band that Sinister people turned me onto (including the chap who first introduced me to B&S those long fourteen months ago) and I should add that they are brilliant, wonderful, and a total blast. A new album coming soon then? Ah, it is indeed a Good Thing. I should like to thank all my Sinister Siblings for the wonderful music they have turned me onto that otherwise might have slipped through my fingers; from Lucksmiths to Looper to Degados to Elephant Six, such wonderful tunes. Oh, and I would be remiss if I didn't send thanks out to the Sinister Chatters who had many fine suggestions for me when I had to go read to the elementary children for Dr. Seuss's birthday. Alas, though I ended up going with AA Milne's original "Winnie-the-Pooh" stories instead of some of the wonderful suggestions that I got, the chatters (especially Will for his "Fredrick" suggestion) introduced me to a slew of kids books that I ended up getting for my niece. Speaking of that, I had a most brilliant time on thursday. A local school (in fact, the school I attended when I was in K-5) held a community event where people came in and read to classes for Dr. Seuss's birthday. It was a blast as the kids were wonderful, intelligent, and a great audience. It was rather odd since several office aides and two teachers recognized me a full decade after I had been there. I'm not sure if it's a good thing or a bad thing that I've changed so little. Ah, well.... Thanks to the people who responded to my frantic begging for help with my report earlier this week. I found a professor of sexuality and the law to interview so it worked out well. But photography class.. dear god. I accidentally measured TEN TIMES the amount of developer I was supposed to (don't ask), so most of the film was completely black. I was working with a partner so I ruined her pictures also. My teacher said the edges were black, which means that the film was exposed to the light somehow too. I almost started crying right in the middle of the classroom, it was horrible. People asked me what happened and I told them and they gave me really strange looks and just walked away. I've always been the dumbest in my class, but now the whole class and my teacher know it. At least my partner didn't really mind. But we've got to take our pictures all over again. I want to quit and shrivel up and die. But on a lighter note, I had to play a violin solo today for some judges and I actually wasn't deathly nervous. Right before I went on I was hyperventilating of course but my orchestra teacher said it sounded confident and good. And I got a tape of B&S demos from Oliver in the mail. So if you're on Sinister, thanks a million and I'll send you something soon in return. And I know they're not at all twee, but I'd like to end this note by saying that I think the new Smashing Pumpkins album is brilliant. Sinister: Boom boom boom like a lighter to the fart

Hewwo all, How's everyone? I keep having nose bleeds so I think the curse of League of Gentlemen is getting me in it's evil clutches. Sam, who has just got a voice posted: << My fave bands are B&S, Ben & Jason (any other B&J fans out there?), the Beta Band, Blur and Bulp. I also really like the new Beels LP. >>... ...and I thought it was grate the he only liked bands beginning with 'B'.Oh wait, I changed some of that quote, to make me right. Never mind. I went into glasgow today, and the optician said my contact lenses were all mixed up and I get to go into glasgow next week for new ones. I like glasgow because I get to go to Pizza Hut with my mum. There was an american guy next to me, and he was getting a bit mixed up, and he ordered what sounded like a "Meaty Minge" pizza and said that sounded reall tasty which made me spit my juice all over the place and crack up laughing until I was nearly sick, because minge is pubic hair. And his family all turned round and glared at me, and I felt really bad because I couldn't control myself. I meant to put this in my last post but I didn't. I nearly got kicked off the computer in computing class, because I went on to the sinister website, and lo and behold, what appeared in the search box but 'porn;gearstick', and I prompty got told on by the boy with a fake rubber poo, who had been throwning it at my head in a vain attempt to get me off the computer. So, I then spent the next half hour trying to convince my teacher that it wasn't in fact a porn site but a site for really grate twee kids. Then i took a peep at 'your slip is showing' and got accused of being a lesbian. I finally read select, with B&S in it, but i didn't buy it because I only had a pound on me. It was quite good tho, and they mentioned sinister in it. Well, something about obsessed internet based fans anyway. But someone I think already said that, so it just shows that i'm not original at all. I s'pose I'd best be off now, though straight after I post this, I'll think of something I did say but should have. Errgh - It is a measure of what a loyal citizen of this parish I have been these last two and and a half years, that I have never been away for anywhere like this long before. I went skiing in Switzerland, you know. I love pretending to be rich instead of just posh. It's fun looking through over 313 posts, but not that fun. I have no idea what you're all on about. I feel like Bob Hoskins in 'Mona Lisa', out of prison and bewildered by child prostitutes. Who's that in the French maid's outfit? Is she another St Lucy? It looks like little Stevie T the film reviewing monkey and I agree about everything in the movies. 'The Talented Mr Ripley' was an archetypal 7/10 film. It unsettled me though. I keep staring in the mirror and saying "But I like him.....Marge, you like *everybody*" over and over again. I looked through my old diaries from schooldaze the other day for references to Jude Law but all I could find was the line "Jude complimented on my shirt today, which pleased me a lot for some reason." I also found a school magazine review criticising his performance in 'The Seagull'. Ha ha. I don't have a scanner. Can I send Miss Scarlet my clothes in the post? I've just got a promo copy of the new Delgados album, called 'The Great Eastern', which has brightened my day. I didn't even know there was one on the way. It's great what you can find in the Guardian music editor's bin. Someone who was always a bit narky got too narky once and left Sinister in ignominious circumstances. But before that he came up with a list of Scottish bands that B&S fans were supposed to like but which he thought were rubbish. I think he dismissed the Delgados as sub-Pavement dross. Mark E Smith once called Pavement sub-Fall dross. My sister once called the Fall a noisy racket. My sister knows shit. Sorry, *the* shit. No, that's not right. I was lying in bed unable to sleep last night and rather than count sheep, I invented a 20 minute stand-up comedy routine. I was thinking of frightening children at the Poetry Cafe with it. This Delgados track seems to be about household cleaning.
