Hello all, I hope you all had a good week-end. Mine was quite rich musically speaking... - i FINALLY get money this week to get le LLPJ bex-set. 3..6..9 and more hours of hapiness this week-end. - After been reading all your messages concerning Looper, i FINALLY get "Up a tree", and I like it. As my flatmate told me (with that look saying "you're really nuts"), it is "a bit of a concept, uuh?", but I really like it. Well, thanks you all for talking about it, you kind of decided me to get it, and that was a good idea. - As my flatmate is not nuts (well, he thinks so..) he gets the "magnolia" soundtrack, which is not fantastic globally speaking, but I quite enjoyed the film theme, it's a song called "momentum" by a singer called Aimee something-i-cant'-remember...If you can listen to it, well do, that bass guitar theme is quite obsessing, actually. Concerning that debate going on about "good" music, I agree with Rob when he says that it's linked to art...Some pieces of music make everybody agree, I mean everybody recognizing it's "good" because it can't be any other way, even if you don't like it. It's like eeeh, Mozart's Requiem, let's say. Quite hard to explain, actually, but if you agree to say that some forms of art (wherever discipline, painting, music, writing, etc...) reach a common agreement because of their quality, universality or whichever word you use, you'll understand what i'm saying. If I'm not really clear please let me know, i'll try to do better next time! hi babes, I bored. I've had a boring weekend, and its monday morning, back at work, and work is boring. But why is life so dull? I have come to the conclusion that it is where I live - in a stereotypical middle england 'oh how quaint' country village, where all events have to be authorised by the womens institute mafia, and the lord supreme and ultimate power is the vicar. Mind you, we now have a female vicar, and that caused a few ripples in the over-sixties group, I can tell you. Surely there most be something to grab my attention. I know, I'll look in the "something for the weekend' page of the village magazine - 1, the over-sixties group are having a 'suprise' coach trip (a coach trip to a suprise location, which really isn't a suprise because they have to tell people where they are going just incase someone becomes ill). 2, the scouts and guides are having a car-boot sale (although it isn't really a car-boot sale because these are frowned upon by the local council due to the huge numbers of trade dealers avoiding VAT and stolen goods, and the scouts and guides don't have a carpark anyway). 3, Charity football match on the playing field - village gents vs. village ladies. 4, The thrice weekly bus service to bigtown calls at the village again on saturday morning. Perhaps I am being unfairly sceptical about the village, my home, because I am sure it is a very pleasent place to live. Its just a little too quiet...actually I better not say that otherwise they might turn it into an M1 bypass route. Anyway, coming round to a more musical theme, has anyone come across sodastream (they have an EP out at the moment called practical footwear), and don't they sound freakishly like belle and sebastian? The first time I heard them, I thought they were one and the same, except for the underlying double bass in all sodastream songs. very scary. YAY!!!!! i know it is soon to hear from me again but since i share all my sorrows with you i felt i should share a triumph (of sorts). i have just printed out a rough final draft of my entire thesis! this is a very joyous occassion as this goddamn thing has been consuming my entire life for some time now. it's multi-coloured b/c my black ink ran out and my discussion is rather crappy, but at least it's done! hopefully i can have the final draft done for tuesday. and, my results actually turned out to be very interesting. i would tell you all but it would take up a lot of space and bore the vast majority of you... power to jenn for kicking some boy's ass! very impressive. and for the sorrow part of my post: i hate it when i get left out of things. there are 3 of us girls doing our theses in the same lab and the other 2 always do lab stuff without me. i've gotten used to that, but this morning they went out to breakfast and didn't even invite me :( i always get left out of things. luckily i am so tired lately that everything just rolls off my back. no stress no offense. it's not bad. apart from being completely useless after 9pm. i am boycotting the oscars tonight. i am bitter about the shafting of fight club. that was such an amazing movie and it's being completely ignored. i'm not a big fan of violence (despite what you might think from my support of jenn's ass kicking and my love of this movie) but i don't think that fight club should have been ignored just b/c it was bloody (i don't see anyother reason for it to be ignored). it was clever, entertaining, thought provoking...everything a movie should be. why am i getting so bitter about a movie? do you think anyone ever has a right to be bitter. one of my philo profs thinks that bitterness is anger that lasts beyond a time where anyone else is willing to sympathize with it. but how can you just let something go? if you have a right to be angry why should you stop just b/c everyone is sick of hearing about it. plus to let it go you often need to vent and when no one will listen to you anymore how can you vent that festering anger? hmmm...i'm not really bitter about the movie i'm bitter about the stupidity of people. today i opened the paper to be greeted with an article about how feminism is bad b/c some nutty women went around a church spraying anti-religious slogans. so now all of feminism promotes intolerance of religion. ok, i'm starting to ramble and i could go on for ages. just wanted to vent. don't know if i can let my bitterness go yet... -di he who hates is to be pitied, but he who loves is to be pitied more -german proverb +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the undead Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail sinister(a)missprint.org. Greetings from the most dangerous place in the world - Adelaide, South Australia. According to the NRA (in the US) since the banning of semi- auto & auto weapons the crooks are running rampant, and we are all too scared to leave our homes. Oh, I was so glad that someone has taken up our cause! Yes, I have been too scared to leave my house ever since the gun laws came into place - that's why I live in my office building, and never go anywhere without a personal bodyguard. But lately I have needed to go home to dust as I have not been there for about a year, and that is why I have not written to the list in so long. I've been stuck there. But I'm back today - I forced myself to come in this morning to let you all know that the NRA has taken up our cause, maybe they can come over here and take on the crooks themselves? Overthrow our government and little Johnnie Howard? Create some more propaganda? You know I can still walk home from town in the middle of the night with a friend without fear of something happening? Where else can you do that, I ask? I mean, yes it is getting worse, but not in that way. If kids weren't so wrapped up in american culture (gangs & rap & movies) they wouldn't be running around with guns. The other problem is the heroin addicts, and I don't believe they MEAN to hurt anyone, but I don't have a solution to that one..... Honestly, you're more likely to die in a car accident or from old age, than get shot or stabbed in your own home. So Americans still see fit for propaganda in this day and age? Isn't propaganda the weapon of military regimes in third world countries and communist nations? Aren't you going backwards? Maybe the NRA are losing so much support this is the last resort. They should just go visit a playground or high school and get in the line of fire from some kid and die quietly. Am I being too harsh? No. Proving the point some population of americans are stupid as fuck. Now for something completely different: B&S content - do you think there would be any chance that single would be released in AUS? Stupid question, I think, before I open my big mouth again, can anyone recommend a safe site for ordering CD's? That would be much appreciated. I've had my bitch for the day - thank's for listening. (probably just the thought of listening to the vocal mixes by themselves). sadly, this purchase has pushed me into the realm of the moneyless college student. the new album. what to say? i guess, i will say how it troubles me that everyone is judging the album on the title/titles of the songs/writers of the songs alone, not the merit of the tracks themselves. oh well, sinisterians will be sinisterians i suppose. Oh no...you've started the boy. The hours I have spent arguing "good" music vs. "fun" music...and the existance of those that are both and those that are neither... But I figure I'll throw in my two cents...if you are easily bored...delete this now. Okay...now that we've gotten those fools out of the way... Obviously, there is no one purpose to music...or any art for that matter...but perhaps a line should be drawn between certain forms of faux-art and "true" art (not that I mean to say I know the meaning of art...but I think you all see what I mean...not being snotty just...okay okay...enough of that). I am of the mind, that the role of art, above all else, is to transmit philosophy and deeper thought. We are all little perfect spheres trapped in ourselves and surrounded by infinity...I believe it was Hume who spoke of a devil that trapped us in a room and fed us reality and we never realized that all we see are merely illusions of the devil. I write music in an attempt to knock chips in that wall...to take my thoughts, bundle them up into little spider webs and toss them out, hoping some other perfect little sphere will grab onto them...praying for that connection, that hole in the wall where they can see me and I can see them. Music that isn't as serious as all that is not neccisarily inferior...just serves a different purpose. that is certainly something inherently right about making people feel happy. However, if the balance is upset and people are too obsessed with making themselves happy to think for a second and contemplate the deeper side of this life, well then something is wrong. If everyone wants nothing but another group of hot boys they can cream over, then the philosopher and writer is ignored, and if the writer is ignored, then our collective sociatal faults fail to be recognized and our progress as a civilization that I believe, at its core, is good and not evil, ceases. Dance and be merry...but think as well. We need merry makers, but do we not need critics, pessimists, cynics, philosophers, lovers, prophets, and poets as well? For some of us, music IS that serious...music IS art...music IS one of the only things that keeps us connected and sane. If you've made it this far, you are obviously a loser and need to get out more. Hewwo, Sorry, about the subject line, it's not very nice, I know. What have I been up to all week? Well, I've had my hair cut into a bob. My friend says it's the twee-est haircut ever. It's just a bob . It means I look ok in a beret though. Oh, I was on the stairs in science, minding my own business, when a hard boy started pushing me about and hitting me. So I said "Go to hell, you bastard" (as I wasn't in a good mood, that's why I swore and all). So he started punching me, which wasn't fair because he's a boy and much much stronger than me, and I've never fought anyone before. Normally I would have ran away and cried, but instead I hooked him in the face so hard that I burst his nose, and punched him a couple more times and knocked him over. Then some other boy grabbed him and battered him moke-less for hitting a girl. Then I ran away and cried. But it's really good, because now everyone thinks I'm this psycho boxer kid because I beat up one of the hard kids, and nobody's come near me for ages. But I'm not really a psycho boxer kid, it was a one off, but you won't tell anyone, will you? I got very drunk last night. I would tell you about it but I didn't know that a litre of cider could screw your memory up. It's quite scary. I've got my mum to order me a new tee shirt, after my bus one got destroyed. I'm also giving her the money for the isobel and fox one since that is lovely, and some new badges after the hard kids nicked mine for a laugh. Isn't the cover of nalda said weird? Why is the rule of spelling supposed to be "i before e except after c"? W isn't a C. Nick Dastoor said something like "Jen's picture is up, so you all know she is in fact not a 20 year old pervert" (not exact quote, so please don't sue me nick :)). Could everyone please excuse for the fact I have really fat legs, and a sad jumper. Also, i didn't know that climbing on the ancient ruins of Ephesus was all that dangerous. 'Ruins' is another word that doesn't fit the spelling rule. I can't stop saying 'man' after every sentence. Man. It sounds really moke-ish, I really have to stop. The new album will be grate. 'The Busy World of Richard Scarry' is really cool. It's about a worm, with a nice hat. I'm going to go before I pass out. Sinister: the second cool thing is.......

Dear all, hello again. I'm back, and thank you to all of you who have decided to continue reading my rather self-indulgent dialogue of an ill person. The second thing which has made me feel a bit better was a tv show I saw last night. When I couldn't sleep I turned on the tv to see the top ten of the most irriating songs ever, and despite every one being a valid entry, I enjoyed it very much. I enjoyed it because it made me smile, I enjoyed it because it gave me nostalgic glow (at 17? this is crazy!), but also I enjoyed the music. Yes that's right, I enjoyed the music. Now there's been some interesting discussion on this list recently about the pigeon-holing of some music, and although that's good sometimes when you're trying to find out generally what somebody else likes, it can also be dangerous. However, what really made me smile was the fact that I enjoyed these songs, and although I have a wide musical taste (B&S - Leftfield - Madonna (early stuff)), I was sure I was going to be snooty. I wasn't snooty, and I suddenly realised in a cheesy Hollywood way, this is what music's all about: It's about making people feel something they wouldn't feel otherwise. Music really isn't that serious a business. Sure, sometimes, albums come out which are very serious and very fab (such as XTRMTR and others), but it doesn't have to be, and all these people who get terribly worked up about whether they have an original Tigermilk or whatever seem to be taking it all the wrong way. In the grand scheme of things it doesn't really matter, and people enjoy what they enjoy, and if that falls into a particular category, then fine. If it doesn't that's fine too. The basic point to this ramble is that what made me happy was the fact that I wasn't snobby about music, and that I liked it for what it was not what it stood for, and I reckon the more people start doing that, and taking Harry Hunt's advice of thinking twice before doing something that you wouldn't think twice about, perhaps everyone would get along a bit better. The point is that I think people should try to like what *they* like rather than what they think it would be cool for them to be *seen* to like, it you catch me. Anyway, enough of that. I'd just like to apologise for the above, since I'm ill and thinking decidedly crookedly. If anyone agrees please say so, because it will give me validation. Lots of love, SamW.xx P.S. Sinister: The first pleasing thing is.....

Hello again, all you sinister people. Well I have glandular fever. Which is nice. I've been sitting in my bed not having much energy to do anything much for the last week or so, and I'm feeling shit for it. Any sympathy is greatly appreciated. But my shitness has been greatly aleviated this weekend, for two reasons. The first is to do with the clocks going forward, which I love. The fact that they *have* to go forward is a tad depressing (ie they had to go back in the first place), but it's so nice for it to be light at six o'clock, and well, I don't give a shit about my body-clock being screwed around with at the moment because I'm sleeping most of the time anyway. But nonetheless it pleased me, and what pleased me even more was that my computer had already put itself right when I'd turned it on this morning. How cool is that (okay, well not very, but I haven't been out of the house for the last week). The second thing that pleased me I'll write in a seperate post, because that way people can choose to continue reading if they want, without the bad feeling of a having only read half a post.
