Well, as I usually do, I have to agree with Nick (who despite his apologies is always a pleasure to read) when he says: I'm just with the Dossinger boy in detecting a current of 60s pastiche that I don't ultimately think brings out the best in the band. Where do I detect this current? Well, on the basis of some of the new songs that I have heard live (not all of them making it to the album) and other people's descriptions of 'Legal Man' and some of the tracks on the album. It was 'Dirty Dream Number Two' that first got me worried. A favourite of many, I know, but for me the first time I heard it was the the time it sounded best, unlike other tracks which grew and grew on repeated listening. There's something about pastiche that precludes a song really mattering, having a life of its own. Now I know this could all be idle speculation, and the album might not be one big 60s fest, or it might confound my prejudices and *be* a 60s fest and still wonderful, but I was just wanting Reid to know that he wasn't the only one with slight worries. The pastiche quality to the band's later work which may simply be a result of the democratization of the songwriting process -- and not just simply sharing lyrical composition, but the assumption that working so long in the studio on this album suggests that the band is constructing the music more as a group rather than simply taking songs that Stuart had written over the period of a few years and following his direction/instruction (or are repeatedly second-guessing themselves). Even the rave-ups on "Arab Strap" are newer compositions than, say, the more ethereal "Simple Things" or "Sleep the Clock Around," which -- if I'm not mistaken -- dated back a few years before their official release. Based on the unreleased songs and descriptions of the new ones, Stevie's fingerprints seem to be more pronounced -- and he does seem to be the archtypical rocker of the group. Exactly why this results in covers of Northern Soul songs such as "Landslide" I don't know. That said, I agree with Nick that this doesn't bring out the "best of the band," which is arguably the sensibility of Stuart's lyrics, but his (stuart's, not nick's) -- for the lack of better words -- disaffected, winsome outlook on the world *was* likely to be altered when he went from writing songs for himself on a four-track to doing so in the glare of the public with the knowledge that they would be recorded and released. The relative innocence of the band's early work, when they didn't expect to reach an audience of any size, frankly can't be duplicated now. Otherwise, they may be guilty of karaokeing themselves. On a more personal, wank-off note (which it could be argued that every post is), I risked damaging the list's good name by dubbing my fantasy Major League Soccer team Sinister FC, but after the first week of thrilling First Division American soccer action our list's namesake sits in first place out of the 2,400 or so participants -- and all this without being able to afford to purchase the Chicago Fire's two-goal hero Hristo Stoichkov. Strange how an aged legend can have his career resurrected playing against a bunch of former American college boys, eh? Hello All! Last night, while driving to a restaurant with my friend, he was making some crass remarks about my driving, ("when did your car turn into a go-cart?") which, I must confess held a bit of truth. Nonetheless, I replied with. "Oh shut it, dickslap." It was a great moment in the life of Molly, you know, one of those things you say that makes you proud to be so witty. Mind you, I'm not quite sure if I used "dickslap" in the proper context, but it just seemed to work. I must be off. My French Film class is calling. Has anyone ever seen "India Song" by Marguerite Duras? We're watching that right now. Oh my... the sound quality is quite bad, so I'm not comprehending all that is going on... and there's really not much anyway. So far, just some people lying on a floor. Hot damn! Sinister: a little pig goes a long way...

Fancy that, I'm yet another toddler who, with a hop skip and a jump, has dived over the stair gate into post-nursery freedom, leaving a life of fisher price behind. There seems to be loads of us growing up at the moment - the more 'mature' sinister listees must have been bed hopping like bunnies last year to generate such a baby boom, no wondering everyone seems sooo friendly. Anyway, I don't know much about the song, but dick slapping sounds very painful to me, I can't imagine anybody wanting to pay for it really. Unless they like that sort of thing. Perhaps it is one of lifes little puzzlers. A bit like a friend of mine who is obsessed about her colourblind belle and sebastian t-shirt, but she is colourblind so to her it is just a series of dots. Or how on earth do they got the chocolate on to malteasers with out leaving a finger print or a flat side where they have had to put it down while they coat the other side. I have a simple brain, and it hurts. Seems to me like the attempts to predict the style of the album via the song titles is very much like trying to divine the future through tea leaves. However, it is a lot more fun and doesn't require drinking nasty tea with the leaves still in it so I think the Kids are all right. And remember it is the difficult 4th album so if they want to play about with Riverdance-esque song arrangements and Kenny G style musoings then it is the Rock Stars privilege and we should be grateful for allowing our stereophonic cups to runneth over via the album. On another note £20 will get you a promo acetate copy of the new Looper album if you know where to get it..... And I do. Having said all that, I think judging a record solely on the basis of its tracklisting is a *fantastic* idea anyway. Stop being so sensible. It's weird the way the artwork has disappeared from both the Beepster and band sites. Do you think they're trying to stop bootleggers or something more sinister is at work? Have the twins of evil objected to their representation? I'm still reeling from Alasdair's latest missive. He's right about 'Being John Malkovich'. Terrific script. If you're put off by the worry that it's just zany art-wankery then don't be. It's played so straight, that's what's so good about it. The characters have their on-screen existence pared down to the status of puppets (ooh - ironic) in the film's comic vision. They don't display the usual boring 'human' ways of dealing with events such as you normally expect in films. Except John Malkovich himself, who therefore has rings run around him by everyone else. In a way it reminded me of Hal Hartley's short film 'Ambition', which is a blast too. Oh, and if anyone is interested what my idea of the sexiest thing on earth is, then see Catherine Keener's Maxine in 'Being John Malkovich'. yeah so hey... this is the first thing i have ever bothered to tell (to "youse", that is): down the street at the rough trade (talkin london-town, W11-styles here. anybody around?) where they are all very nice and EVEN held a rare-as-fuck vinyl copy of the Alec Eiffel/Elvis Presley t'ing for me last week (well I think it's rare anyhow. cuz they told me. and i'm a sucka) - and it's G*R*A*T*E - well anyway down there at that teeny weeny mecca of cool in their "digital hardcore" section someone had popped a couple of B&S CDs in the front of it. like, to trick people. I've just been musing for the past few weeks on how nice the album cover is - whether it's just a nice visual setup, symmetrical etc etc or if it's designed to be representative of good/evil? It's a bit obvious, I suppose, but a good idea (and one that I have to thank by boyfriend for <g>). You may know him actually, he's a certain person on this list...so no list snogs for him, teehee. Unless they're exceptionally smutty, of course. I have a friend at school, in my Art class, and she's going to enter a competition to work at Radio One for a year out before uni. She keeps asking me to think of a song lyric that expresses her. It's a shame her name's not Judy, lol... I've been recently introduced to a rather fantastic MP3 exchange site (www.napster.com) and I downloaded 'Poupee...' and lots of other nice rarities. However, 'The Loneliness...' won't download :( Anyway, I'll stop being boring now and get back to my Art coursework (I'm rather naughtily stealing the school's resources for 'non-academic' purposes....despite the fact that there's a big, red sticked in front of me that says 'ONLY SCHOOL RELATED WORK ALLOWED, RAR!'. I'll just stick my tongue out at the librarian...). It's nice to be on the list. The feeling of tweeness is now complete.
