Dear lords and ladies, well, what a day. and it's only halfway through. You know when you get those days when you wish that lobotomies could be free to all on the NHS? maybe this is just me, but i need some amnesia medicine (commonly known as alcohol) to cope with the days events. Sorry for those of you who hate the "you'll never guess what happened to me today..." emails, but i was, well, part-informed to do so. At 4am today, i woke with my girlfriend to a perculiar predicament. Somehow, her skirt had wended its way from her bag to my waist, while asleep. Part-drowsy, i turned to her and said "do i have your skirt on?" suggesting that i may be wrong. Unfortunately, it proved i was not wrong. She then laughed for at least an hour before we managed to return to the green fields of foreverland...while i lay humbled. That ain't the worst bit. I cannot entirely remember how i did it. odds are i put it on as it was the best thing to hide my equipment while i went to the loo. At worst, i could've slept-walked to my parents room...ho hum. The skirt wasn't bad, i'm not slamming the skirt, it's just...disarming to wake up, unaware of your events whilst asleep. But that's not all; from here it gets murky. One of my mates arrived to pay �90 for our flat at the edinburgh festival, and i pretty much openly humiliated my girlfriend. Not just mild, either. Full-blown "if your mate wasn't here i'd chop off your bollocks and shove them up your ass" rage humiliation. Then, for the next 4 hours, i sat, feeling incredibly guilty (the guilt where you feel that popping yourself is the only way to a: regain sanity and b: rid the world of another stupid tosser) Well...then i saw here off, feeling incredibly guilty, sad, depressed (i hate depression, it's such a sodding useless feeling. It makes me want to smash things and dance) plus other adjectives, then when she was gone, i popped up to the post office to get bolognese sauce (for penne...mmm) and an icecream for my little brother. You think that's all? not so! I arrived at the post office to find it locked. Fine, wednesday afternoon, half-day closing for the p.o, especially out here in the sticks. Unfortunately, the shop was dark and an alarm was ringing. Does bad karma pay itself off in one lump sum PLUS interest, or what?! so, i had to sprint home and call the police. Not 999, mind you, as i saw no criminal on the premises. So i call the local number: "okay sir, i'll patch you through to 999". 2 minutes later: "sorry sir, i'll try another line". FECK FECK FECK, by this point i'm visualising some cockless worm cutting up our post office people. Not nice, when you see the owners of the shop daily, to find their shop locked with a siren wailing. Anyway, the police have despatched a car, taken my name and number, so i'm expecting a call soon. Plus, the sodding post office number is ex-directory! how sodding useless is that?! a SHOP with an ex-directory phone number!!!!! Anyway, no alkypops for me till the bobbies have been round or they'll think i've been at the old bottle too much. I'm off to die quietly...maybe after making some pancakes, if i can find plain flour. Sinister: Irresistibly cloyingly sanctimonious

What an odd review. April Long struggles to articulate what it is that's so annoying about the band, makes a few completely bizarre assessments ('The Chalet Lines' documents a 'half-forgotten romance'? Some romance) and then wraps it up by saying they record's bloody good. I've heard of love-hate relationships, but how anyone can describe something as both 'cloyingly sanctimonious' and 'irresistible' in the same sentence, I can't really understand. It's not that NME writers can't write anymore - it's as if they can't *think*. Stuart's got a letter published in Angst. It's a bit of a rant really. I like his 'it's like we're going out and you're trying to change me' analogy. What a lot of fuss this thing is causing. I agree with Peter Miller that the original piece wasn't half as bad as everyone's making out. Yes, Steven Wells's argument comes across as incredibly half-baked, but I almost got a sense that he knew it. It all comes down to whether or not you agree with his (and April Long's, it seems) belief that people who make records have a certain set of responsibilities to the media. I don't understand why they do, but there you go. Wells tried to drag the fans into it by saying the band treat them badly (tuning up with their backs to the audience and making 'in jokes' apparently - can't say I've ever noticed this especially and I was at the same Manchester concert as he was) but I think he's way off target. The Shepherd's Bush debacle was a pain for some people and that's a shame, but the band did apologise. Oh, and there's the new single format 12"/CD bollocks. But it's not really enough to build a whole thesis on 'contempt for the fans' is it? There's two other letters supporting the band this week. One a bit crap (describing B&S as writing some 'pleasant' songs is hardly going to win over the naysayers). The other one's good though. I hestitate to fall in with the 'NME are angry cause they know they don't matter much anymore' crowd, just cause it seems like a bit of a "ner ner ne ner ner" argument. Reminds me of that Half Man Half Biscuit song 'Bad Review' where the aggrieved party mutters "I only buy it for the gig guide, anyway." But yeah it might be valid nonetheless. It's a weird situation when I'm only buying a publication to read a letter from someone slagging it off. So, the new single. I don't really know what to make of it. I don't dislike it, but then again it doesn't grab me like the other singles have managed to. I play legal man once and for some reason find myself being forced to play saint tropez off the eurotrash album, and from this it is only a small skip across to the sin and depravity that is track 11, bananaramas version of waterloo. ooo, it makes me cringe. Perhaps it will grow on me, but in the meantime I think I will slip legal man back into the case and return the dog on wheels EP to it's rightful slot in the cd player. Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like A Peasant (Jeepster) Two years since their last album of new material, and all the characteristic eccentricities that once made Belle & Sebastian such an interesting, mysterious and nobly intransigent musical/ cultural phenomenon have begun to wear thin. They offered a suitably shabby, second-hand blanket of anti-establishment isolationist sentiment and fuzzily melodic nostalgia, and the disaffected flocked to them like moths to a porchlight. Yet their continued refusal to engage with the media has begun to beg certain hazardous, legend-debunking questions: is their wilful facelessness a symptom of timidity, or arrogant inverse elitism? Is their dedication to the underachieving indie ethos and dusty musical convention a gesture of rebellion, or are they just lazy? Despite the unimpeachable beauty of their every recorded moment, their art has failed to evolve - and it seems that if they are going to be the voice of misfit society, they should at least have something to say. Finding even a hint of modernity on a Belle & Sebastian album would be akin to seeing Christ's face in a ciabatta roll - startling, unlikely and, in such a context, unappetising. It isn't as though one wants breakbeats or cameo rappers, but some sort of progression ? a fresh twist that might distinguish this from any other B&S record, perhaps - seems a reasonable request. It is not one, however, that they seem particularly concerned with. Despite the fact that songwriting contributions from other members continue to proliferate, it's amazing how much their sound remains strictly marshalled within Stuart Murdoch's vision. So although there are intimations of Isobel Campbell's predilection for nursery rhyme lullabies and Stevie Jackson's love of Motown (plus a first-time offering from violinist Sarah Martin, 'Waiting For The Moon To Rise'), we are still fixed firmly in what is now 'classic' B&S territory - watercolour strings and parps of brass, intricately constructed arrangements executed with effortless, vivid panache. And, of course, Stuart Murdoch's airless, disinterested voice presides. To be fair, there are minor diversions from the template. Even though the songs are narratives starring boys and girls rather than men and women, they deal less with mawkish adolescence and more with abstract emotional disquiet. 'I Fought In A War' is a soldier's letter home to his sweetheart, 'The Model' is a rambling, confessional apology (distinguished by lines like, "It was the best sex she ever had", sung by a man who sounds as though he would find the sight of a woman's bare ankle terrifying ), and the marvellous 'Don't Leave The Light On, Baby' shimmers with the sort of arching, dimmer-switch and shag-pile sensuality that begs for a reprise. 'The Wrong Girl' is a Spector/ Bacharach/'Daydream Believer'-type affair, and the most unashamedly pop song on the album, while 'Chalet Lines' is a minimal, brittle sketch of half-forgotten romance. All of these balance out the album's less inspired patches - the nauseatingly cute 'Nice Day For A Sulk', the fluffy-cardigan handclaps and Schroeder piano of 'Woman's Realm', for example - and ultimately, despite all its self-defeating limitations and annoying, fey affectations, this remains a superb record. Quintessentially Belle & Sebastian. Frustrating. Contrary. Insubstantial. Sinister: Judy, drinks and TOTP

How many other songs mention Judy? The Stranglers had a song called Punch and Judy, the Ramones said something about Judy if I remember correctly while of course Judy featured as the main character in the Boomtown Rats' "Rat Trap" of fond memory. I think the new Judy melody is a very catchy little thing and I wait patiently here in New Zealand for the new album to arrive here. Surely it will be a wondrous day! New Zealand doesn't make much impact on the world's stage, but you trendy and not so trendy sinisterenes should keep an eye or two open for an exciting beverage to be launched in the big and important parts of the world. I have no financial interest at all in "V", a pleasant enough beverage which you should not drink after 3pm if you are planning to sleep that night. If I believe the NZ media (a dangerous thing to do at any time) then the said "V" is about to be/has just been launched amid great hype in Britain. Is this correct? Finally, perhaps some of you old people like me who still listen to "pop" music can help my tragically failing memory. In the old days, when TOTP couldn't get the performer of a rising song or a halfway to decent promo video, a group of scantily clad women called "Pan's People" would dance to the song. After their demise, another outfit called "Legs & Co" fulfilled the same role. But, for around two months in between, a bizarre mixed-sex group danced ridiculous dances until the great British public told them not to be so ridiculous and p.c. because dancing women sell records and weird dancers don't. My question is, what were this lot called? I think the name had "Kipper" in it, but I'm not sure. "Fish Co" was a different something altogether, I think. These days, do B&S ever furnish material for TOTP? It's not a well promoted show here as far as I know, and everybody looks strangely at me when I talk about B&S, still obviously a minority interest. do people on the list still care about other people's b+s dreams? i don't know, but here's mine... i don't remember it too well, so this is right out of my journal... "i was at an Ani [DiFranco]/Looper concert, which for some reason was held in a group of concentric rings of hedges with the band in the center and seats in between each ring. Melissa [my friend] was there, and some other of my friends who showed up in the dream later. Ani played first, but she wasn't opening -- it was a reverse opening sort of thing. Melissa stood real close to the stage to watch Ani and there were these huge walls on the stage covered with the lyrics to the songs Ani was playing.
