Everything feels much better in the light of day, except for my splitting headache of course. My sincere thanks to those who replied with words of encouragement and sympathy to my last post. I no longer feel so grief-stricken. After all as he told me I am not losing a Not-boyfriend but gaining a Not-boyfriend's girlfriend. Ha! Anyways I would never be able to sleep with him, we've been friends way too long. It is just that I have been subsidizing all of my boyfriends with him for years and if he has a real girlfriend he will not have time to do that anymore. You see he does all the things (well not all) with me that the boys I date can't or won't do, like go see movies with subtitles and take my dog for walks in the park, and play quarters and go to the bookstore and buy me david Sedaris books, and go to the museum see? So it is easy for me to see why another girl would want him to be her real boyfriend, but now what will I do? Not that he's perfect, he doesn't really like Belle and Sebastian, or any of the same music as me really, but I've given up on finding a straight boy with good taste in music around here that doesn't treat girls terribly. Nonetheless I will be okay. This is my second post in as many days, after lurking for months. Must be summer. I'm getting more and more excited for Tuesday to get here (which is when "Fold Your Hands Child" comes out in the States). Of course, to tide myself over I bought "Electr-O-Pura" by the fab Yo La Tengo today, which makes sense, doesn't it? I'm a bit disappointed that I'm going to have to wait until 6pm on Tuesday to get it though, as I have work and there's no record store within walking distance of the shit little city I work in. If any of you are planning on visiting Wilmington, Delaware anytime soon, well... don't. I also had a thought about all the album abbreviations floating around: wouldn't it be easier to call them by their color? It wouldn't work for the singles and EPs, well most of them. Am I only one in thinking that fishyclap sounds like a new venerial disease that you catch from trout? Forget I said that. I seem to have this strange problem of typing the wrong ending on certain words that have both an -ed and an -ing ending. I've wrote "I'm exciting" when I meant "I'm excited" more times than I care to remember. I think it might make people think I'm egotistical. Of course, you may be wondering why I'm so excited all the time, and that would be a good question. I've also noticed that each new B&S album's title is longer than the previous (I must have too much time on my hands). If this keeps up, we'll be enjoying FRDAWFHCVGJRJSV in a year or two. I for one am looking forward to it. It will be called "the purple one". really hoping this post wasn't shit, eric p.s. Anyone out there with lots of flirting advice? I need all the help I can get. Even if you don't have lots. hello. i haven't written in the longest time to this list. i've kept it on digest for the past few months and have just deleted it. sorry. somebody brought my attention back to the list a little bit ago though-thanks jason. 6 more official days of school left. thank god. graduation this month. not next month. not two months away. finally. all of my major assignments are finished. no more internship. only one more paper left. and several creative writing assignments, but i've got a handle on those. what have i been doing for the past few months? for those few of you who care. i've been reading. lots. am currently reading "a confederacy of dunces" by john kennedy toole. would highly recommend it to those who've never heard of it. i've also been writing several short stories and poems. writing poetry's not an unusual activity. and it's not the usual shit either. trust me. i am currently melting in the heat bubble which is my home. i called my mom at work before and she said it was cool enough to require a jacket outside. figures. perhaps i'll subscribe to the non-digest form of this list now. or find someway to get my b key to work. wish me luck. amy. +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the undead Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail sinister(a)missprint.org. Hello there list! Well, this is my first posting although Ive been out of the nursery for quite a while now. I dont know how long Ive been out [ooh, pardon that!] because I must have overlooked the notification you get. Anyway, katy [mutton as I call her] has been saying I should post for quite a while now but it kinda scary yknow? I mean, why would anyone be reading my ramblings? Its rather odd. But I guess Ive been reading everyone elses so I thought it was time to return the favour :) So whats new? Well, of course like anyone within the tuning region of the UK, I watched TOTP last night. It was so blummin grate, and I wont go on about it but struan was go lovely and isobel so good and being all Im gonna pretend I cant be arsed bless her :) as katy posted earlier I phoned her up afterwards to re-live the whole thing but <grrr> she was on the phone to that blimmin boyfriend of hers. So in her most polite way she told me not so politely to bugger off. Seriously I thought the girl was on something, she was so high when she phoned me later. But seeing as were revising for exams at the mo I fear she left the lid off her tippex pen when she was working at her desk. <hmmm> perhaps I know Im going on about nothing imparticular but katy has instilled the fear of god in me by saying you cant just post a few lines so there you go. Now Im just avoiding revision where I can sit at my desk and escape into day-dreams of sitting and having coffee with isobel while monica queen sings in the background <hmmm> lovely! ...hmmmph. yeah, right. why did no-one warn me, that on exiting the world of loner nerdness, stripping my whole personality away and rebuilding it in order to make myself socially acceptable, relationships would just be confusing and painful? but nevertheless wothwhile. unless I'm in the mood for sticking to my old maxim that "happiness is an overdose of endorphins that you are temporarily powerless to control", which it feels like half the time anyway. I'm almost just wanting to be single again and have just the rock-bottom of my feelings to really believe in, but that would mean leaving certain things behind, ahem, that I've, er, never had before. and I'd miss her company, the fact that I've actually found someone with a personality, interests & musical tastes just like mine, and that I can now, in time, join the almighty legions of couples who swan around the supermarket where I work looking like they're completely unaware that they're actually in a public place. I take my hat off to all of them, and may they never find out what I fantasise about, involving strichnine, whilst I'm scanning the food they're buying. but anyway, with all of that going on, I haven't really been living in the real world much. haven't been able to concentrate on exams, so I suppose I'll fail them all (walked out of one of them far too early, just because I wanted to run away somewhere and let some energy out), and I haven't been paying much attention to anything else, save reading what I can of all the Sinister messages (which are great as always). this means I've completely forgotten the following things: -when's the album coming out? (Fold your pants child, of course, as I'm calling it) this is just my total music geek nature showing through, but I couldn't bear to buy it on the second day it comes out (was down to buy TBWTAS at 9 a.m. on the Monday morning!) so I must know. from the messages I've been reading from those of you who've had wee advance tasters, I'm certainly looking forward to it. -when's the Edinburgh picnic again, and where exactly? I really should save more messages instead of deleting so many, but I now only have vaguely misty recollections of it being on June 10th, and can't remember where at all. oh well, now I've got to go off and change for work again, and attempt that most impossible of tasks for a young man first of all: trying to iron a shirt. I look forward to scalding my arms with boiling water. Hello Listees, I hope you are all OK and having a good week-end... Following "El Pais" interview mentioned by Arantxa, there is another one here (still in Spanish) from Mondo Sonoro, sort of free-Spanish NME or so, I guess. http://www.mondosonoro.com/detall_entrevista.asp?id=200882 It is based on a Richard's interview by phone. Some rough translation of things he says... "I believe it is our 'happier' album, to say it this way.I mean, it is an album sounding like B&S, but the songs are indeed more open and expressive, and generally the whole album is transmitting more energy than the previous ones[...] We don't really feel in or out what you call the indie scene. I can't see much in common with a lot of the bands appearing every month, and we haven't either a big interest in their music. I can't tell you more...it is something that doesn't matter that much to us. Our music is here, up to you to do something with it [...} People think we don't do concerts because we don't like it or because we are lazy. It is not true, the thing is that it's quite complicated doing a B&S gig in good conditions, because we need many instruments, a good sound and a surround adapting to all this" Not even two days to go before Monday... Sinister: This post is looking like the Bible, with it's verses lost in time...

Some stuff in no order: 1. TOTP. Bluddy grate. Just after they were on, my boyfriend phoned and was raving about it, as was I, then I was juggling two phones because my best friend rang talking about the same thing. It was a bit frantic to say the least. I went round for the rest of the evening with a massive smile plastered on my face, not being able to stay still. 2. The Times 'Metro' section has Fishyclap as their album of the week this week. The review: ********************************************************************** Bloody awkward coves, Belle and Sebastian. They have a profile so low that even though they beat the evil Steps to win the 1999 Best Newcomer Award at the Brits, people still think they're French. They get offered a lucrative Radiohead support tour, but turn it down so that they can play at a local Glasgow community centre instead. They spend more than a quid on a video and think they're 'selling out'. And when was the last time anyone even cared about that? Then there's the matter of their dealings with the press: they have never sent out a photo of the full band line-up. Occasionally, as an alternative, they mail pictures of their friends. Or toy dogs. They don't do interviews, except to discuss why they don't do interviews. The downside of all these shenanigans is that the music tends to be forgotten. Which is a shame, because Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like A Peasant is a great album. Musically, B&S just get better and better. their roots remain the classic Love album Forever Changes, the pop symphonies of Pet Sounds or (whisper it) some of mike Oldfield's finer moments. The best songs are again written and sung by Stuart Murdoch, in the endless circular sentence style of Nick Drake. The opener I Fought In A War is like Donovan sings the letters of Wilfred Owen. Yes, it's that miserable. Murdoch's finest moment, though, is Chalet Lines; it's unlikely you'll hear a song as sad, touching and heartfelt as this all year. It's about a rape, with Murdoch narrating as the attacked girl. It's a hugely dark moment put into starker contrast by the fact that the song that follows it is a hilarious piece of self-mockery entitled Nice Day For A Sulk. 'Nice day for a sulk/That girl smells of milk', sings Murdoch cheerily, then 'Nice day for a mood/The forecast is gloom' set to a skippy, bouncy march and falling downstairs piano. Terrific. Other highlights include Murdoch and cellist/vocalist Isobel Campbell doing their impression of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra on Beyond the Sunrise, and The Wrong Girl, the kind of upside-down pop song the Monkees wrote when they were set free. A few years ago the NME ran a regular satirical item with the headline 'God Help Us If There's A War'. Under this banner would be pasted a picture of the latest floppy-fringed indie group foolish enough to send the publication a single. Back then, in the wake of Morrissey and The Smiths, when alternative rock was glad to be fey, the world was full of earnest young men with the physique of a sheet of A4 paper. These days they are something of a rarity, and in a world containing Bloodhound Gang's Hooray For Boobies, it's actually a relief to hear a band prepared to be whimsical and sensitive. Truth is, we need Belle & Sebastian far more than they need us. *********************************************************************** Nice review, non? Oh yeah, they got 8/10. 3. Um I got another list crush vote. I thought I knew who it was but truth is, turns out it isn't that person. So I'm baffled now; a)I thought it was my boyfriend, b)Whoever it is is a wee bit silly, because I'm silly and un-crushable. Mail me anyway - I'm intrigued. And I feel all arrogant now for announcing it. Sorry. 4. Oh, one last thing. Just want to say hi to some people - David :), Hib - post, you silly girl!, and Ayesha who just rejoined. Okay, I'll go. Yes, I replied, then realised he meant Isobel. NB - this is true, and not simply a dig at Bel on my part, I think she's lovely.) But then they hear fyhcywlap and think it's rubbish. Oh well, at least we try our best to convert them.
