Sinister: my girlfriend has a nice blender

i can completely relate to nick's problems, my gal has an amazing blender and she is such a snob about it. she claims to be wanting a matching food processor but come on her blender is a kitchenaid and that is almost top of the line, outstanding engineering, and yet now she wants a fancy european fp, i am completely flummoxed. thing is she has great taste in japanese stationery. actually, relevance, i went to school with some of the dart kids (never heard of them? look at the bottom of your styrofoam cup next time you have a cup of coffee and see the dollar signs) and i was dying to date one of them, but i was stuck because i was mute in high school and the only one near my age was a boy and he wasn't that cute. nader is a collectivist egalitarian, i know socialism is fashionable on the list but i like to consider myself apart from the entitled lot. i don't want all hospitals to resemble medicaid/medicare wards. i think old people are greedy(people over 55 own 85% of the assets in this country, their poverty rate is less than half of that for those under 30). i am a bit more idealistic and optimistic i suppose. how silly. vote browne/olivier then. cheers keith m __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? "yes, so, if we're really looking for oxymorons: "the united states, land of the free" seems pretty apt. " A crass and obtuse statement in my opinon. I'm sure my grandfather would disagree. He left a country with rampant poverty and a fascist government for freedom and a chance for a better life in America. I think he's a little more knowledgeable on the subject than you people. He had no money and no friends - 1 shirt and 1 pair of trousers and has a whole lot more today. He'd get a good laugh listening to you folks. Sinister: power, politics and, well, bumbershoot...

hm. and wow. hello all. n|ck g mentioned american politics, thus reading my mind... i'd been sort of guiltily ignoring it for a while (a bit of a complex guilt since i'm canadian...), but then the bits and pieces i would see started being interesting (! or maybe i started to care...) and i began to get a little antsy and ill reading all the coverage of demonstrations around republican/democrat conventions. Because the thing is, this all matters. The world is not made up of individual countries concerned only with what goes on inside them; it is made up of powers working together. But are they actually "working together for a better world"... And what are bush and gore's definitions of "a better world" anyway? I see a lot of corporate rule, a bigger gap btwn rich and poor, and a few band aid solutions. I don't see any global shift in thinking. but some would argue, with twisted stats and tv images of californian splendor, that nothing needs shifting... And what kills me is that so few people vote. the reasons for this, well, i don't know. apathy? disgust? belief that not voting is actually "taking a stand against government"? yes, so, if we're really looking for oxymorons: "the united states, land of the free" seems pretty apt. one of the many things i've read, mainstream and otherwise, is z magazine online, which has a lot of Vote Nader stuff that has honestly been the only interesting and sensical thing i've seen/read/heard about (http://www.votenader.com/) (Yes, Nader is yet another personality, yes, he is playing at politics, but he's actually interested in, oh my god, *change*. i'm sure he's not perfect, but he's a hell of a lot better than bush and gore. and at least (one hopes) his presence during the election run will raise some currently apathetic/cynical/disenchanted eyebrows, spark some thought, start some action.) n|ck g said: >that the person that we pick to run our country's government is just someone that is good at getting the public to like him? >From my small grasp of US politics (which an american friend just told me is better than that of a lot of americans she knows...), the political system is set up to do just this. you vote for a personality really, this personality makes final decisions (never mind that these decisions are often based on financial backing, historical influence and your friends in the senate. sorry, that's the socialist in me getting out.) I don't know, but it's pretty clear to me that if citizens don't understand their country's political system, then they don't understand how to vote (check out the current state of public education in the US). there's some interesting, and more knowledgeable writings on this at: http://www.lbbs.org/ZNETTOPnoanimation.html, read michael moore's letter especially and http://www.villagevoice.com/ as well as miriad others, i'm sure. Frustratingly, what is common sense to one person, is absolute nonsense to another, and we see this all the time, from politics to music. And we get bogged down in the arguments, losing the big picture to power issues. But hey, if mainstream radio listeners are suddenly buying belle and sebastian and liking it, then there's hope in other areas, isn't there? i don't think it's all that weak an analogy, really. jarring leap in topic: Is anyone going to Bumbershoot in Seattle on labour day long w.e.e.k.e.n.d.? because you know who's going to be there, don't you? hm, oh, only the Magnetic Fields. and lots of other bands and writers and artists, of course (http://www.bumbershoot.com) so i must go this year, if only for two of the four days. i've never stayed overnight in seattle though, so here's my plea for tourist sympathy - what are some good places to stay (hopefully nearby the festival site) that don't cost too much and are, well, clean? i've looked on the web, but one never knows; they're all trying to sell themselves or there's too little info to determine okayness. i'd so appreciate any suggestions, thank you. in return i will give you huge travel tips on vancouver and very small almost meaningless tips on new york, toronto and small towns in eastern poland. never speaking in sound bites, Robyn ===== I was reading the dictionary. Sinister: leaving aweful detroit

i don't know if anyone is interested but i will be moving in two weeks to lovely munich germany. i am letting it be known that if anyone is traveling and wants a place to stay let me know. germany is a beautiful town but can be a bit expensive. so if by chance any of you are going to the oktoberfest or are just going to be there; mail me and i will be glad to help out any way possible. on another note. i know that most of you are completely oblivious to american politics since you live in england but for those of you that follow them slightly i have a question to pose: does anyone care about the fate of the united states and the facists that we call our leaders? last night was the democratic national convention. al gore accepted the nomination for the democratic party candidate. it is expected that the voter turnout will be lower than ever before. it is expected that less than 50% of those people of age to vote will actually go out and vote. this year will be the first time in the history of the united states that less than half will vote. i think that's kind of sad in a way. i am of age to vote and would vote if i was going to be here. the candidates make such a concious decision not to have any strong convictions on anything as to not deter anyone from voting for them. there is really no difference between Bush (shrub) and Gore. in my own personal oppinion i think that Shrub is a slimey bastard fit to be thrown to the lions but that's just me. gore's not much better but i guess that gore does a better job at getting people to feel good about him. on paper i don't think that either are really all that good. so does it all come down to this? that the person that we pick to run our country's government is just someone that is good at getting the public to like him? that doesn't seem right. for christ's sake! we had a president that was out of hollywood. how is that right? i'll stop. i'm rambling. what do you people think? ng ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the undead Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail sinister(a)missprint.org. okeydokey, since i'm off for 2 weeks, i'd get some stuff down before i go... THAT WINE STORY very very funny...sorry, i cant remember who wrote it. i know a good email is one which makes you giggle 10 minutes after reading it, without prior warning. EDINBURGH let's say i'll be at the dali exhibition on monday at...12pm. sound good? i'll be wearing pink flares and a jeepster badge, if you dare approach...might see some of you there. TAUTOLOGIES i am too fick to no wot this means, but i agree there is a difference between 'seeing' and 'looking'. you can look at something and not really register it...i have this effect on people. however, it is an oxymoron, since to read it, one must register it. therefore, it is already read. also, it's just a song...i thought they was just pretty words wot go well wiv de musik...(ooh, i hear grating teeth...) EDINBURGH again. have i got these right? "wee", "laddie", "embra", "glasgae", "coont", "ken", "och", "aye". MAGNETIC FIELDS i've only got one of their songs. and i havent listened to it. SPELLING someone (while drunk) mentioned stuarts "sinsietr" comment. I have a few more to question. could a veteran explain to me since i am now so embarrassed with my writing to you that i couldnt possibly humiliate myself further by pretending to understand your spelling habits. "grate" - why? do you think graters are great or summit? help me out... "sinsietr" - um...just a spelling mistake which was never corrected, or a deep secret buried in the past of sinister's undergrowth? "struan" - i admit, i have no sodding clue what you're on about. Sorry. PIXIDUST you dont even mention my name, ya cow. why should i waste my bones typing out your full name? (sorry if this sounds harsh...) also... insurrection (in su rek' shun) - n. The act of rising in open opposition to established authority; uprising, rebellion in the initional stage. i think you apply to the latter. latter (lat er)- a. coming or happening after something else; later, second-mentioned. Once again, you apply to the latter there. Sorry you guys. Also, can i say sorry (not in a guilt-expressed way, but a sympathy way) to all you scots with the botched results...the government really surpass themselves with monumental fuck-ups now and again, guess you got lumped with it this time. hang in there... no more from me for a few weeks...the mailbag will be slightly lighter (and less crap-filled) for a while. Good morning all, my mate brought in a copy of this morning's Metro paper (a free paper in London) and there was this interview in it, so thought you all might to read it. A few inaccuracies in it I think, but it's interesting anyway. Ben x The 60 second Interview: Richard Colburn. Belle & Sebastian are the Scottish band that scarcely anyone has a bad word for. They havent courted fame, theyre not known for pursuing a rock n roll lifestyle (indeed, they barely have ever seem to venture out of Glasgow) and they hardly ever give interviews, Here drummer Richard Colburn, 30, reveals a few secrets. * The band is often described as fey. is this fair ? Are you drippy ? Yes and no. Its not fair because thats not the way it is at all. But, given the way were put across, then it probably is fair. I mean, if you don't want a tag them change your image. If anybody met me theyd have a shock. * How would you confound expectations ? Id take them out drinking. Ive recently been to Ireland and it wasnt a twee weekend. I used to drink a lot of Guinness. I had a pretty cool concoction at one point - Guinness with Baileys chasers and pints of cider. I missed my flight back because we went to the boozer until ten oclock in the morning. * How did B&S come to make their first album ? Most bands get together with as vision of being pop stars. It wasnt like that for us. We were doing a music business course at college. The course had a label. Every year they signed a band to do a single - not for the benefit of the band, but for the benefit of the course - so people could see what it was like to sign and promote a band. We were picked. The budget was bigger than expected, so we did an album. Only about 1,000 records went out and we didnt expect any comeback. It wasnt my lifes dream - it just happened. * Did Blue Peter really refuse to let you on ? We talked a lot about doing Blue Peter. It would be quite different - a change of pace from doing Jools Holland stuff. Youd be dodging dogs, cats and tortoises and probably singing next to some majorettes. I think we might have put a request in and they probably did turn it down. We even had the thought of doing the Eurovision Song Contest. * Your worst ever job ? I was a postman when I was about 16. I was on a casual contract. theyd phone up at 4am and if youd been out the night before it was awful. Youd hear the phone ringing and think: Oh no, its them. The worst bite I ever saw in my life was from a cat. They have the sharpest teeth. I was a snooker player for a while as well. * So you were nearly Steve Davis ? Ive still got some old bow ties and dinner jackets I use to wear at tournaments. I would never wear them again. I won a few tournaments but nothing major because I never stuck at it. If youre going to put 110 percent in it theres probably not much point. * Ever played a gig that hasnt worked ? Jesus Christ, aye. The first Belle and Sebastian gig we played was when we were at college. The audience didnt know if it was the soundcheck or the gig and neither did we. Another bad one was when we played in France and they out us straight after a band called Loch Ness. they thought there was a Scottish connection. This band played three hours of heavy metal and pink covers. We knew we played the quietist music in the world and not very well so we were terrified. But Loch Ness did three encores then everybody left. * What would other band members say was your most annoying habit ? Not being able to say no. If someone asks me to do a gig, whatever, Ill always go: Aye, right, magic, thatll do. It gets me and the rest of the band into bother. Neil, our manager, has to go round undoing the things Ive agreed to. * Your most embarrassing item of clothing ? A horrible pair of brown Y-fronts. I shared a flat with seven or eight other people and there was a drying room I left them in once. Someone went in and the rest of us heard a loud shriek. We all came running and he walked out holding these tattered faded things. Ive thrown them away now. * Do you still feel young ? When I reached 27 I realised I wasnt young anymore. I dont mind. Its when Ive been on a bender - or maybe at a festival playing with other bands - and you come back feeling terrible. My girlfriend Louise is a bit younger than me and shes had a couple of knock-backs from nightclubs and pubs because they think shes under 18. Thats never going to happen to me. * Anything that makes you switch the radio off ? Quite a lot of trance that seems OK but its on the radio all the time and theres only so much you can take. Ive been listening to funk and a bit of hip hop. I also like the new Badly Drawn Boy album and James Taylor stuff. * Whod you most like to play with ? Id love to play in Becks band. Its phenomenal.
