Sinister: Sinister related polar bears as CDs (huh?)

Good morning/afternoon A short story........................There was once a chap living in Portsmouth in the UK (well someone has to) who fell in love with Belle & Sebastian, discovered a wonderful mailing list which in turn grew and developed an extra limb in the shape of a chatroom (not sure what type of limb that would be?) This chatroom introduced the chap to a lot of cool people but one in particular stole his heart and after a couple of years of phone calls at strange times of the day the chap left good old Portsmouth, moved to America and got married where he's currently living happily ever after (pause for ahhhhhs) Now as is the tradition at the wedding the couple was presented with money from their kind and generous relatives and after purchasing a plethora of toasters and oven mittens they thought we know we'll release a CD of bands we love and thus began a process that lasted almost as long as the couple's relationship............ Among the bands who kindly gave them songs were several with strong Sinister/Belle & Sebastian connections including The Lucksmiths and three song featuring Sinister listees themselves. These are Callow who gave them a song that sounds like the precious offspring of a romantic union between Stuart Murdoch & Joe Pernice, Ireland's finest The Dudley Corporation with a song actually about the couple's overseas love and Aberdeen featuring the very lovely Beth Dean now of The Trembling Blue Stars and their better than the original version of Biff Bang Pows' She Never Understood. Add to this wonderful songs by the likes of The Aislers Set, Lovejoy, Jordans, Watoo Watoo & White Town and you can just imagine the joy the couple felt when all these boxes of CDs were deposited on the doorstep of their Hoboken abode. But the couple soon realized that much like when you find an abandoned baby Polar Bear it's not fair to keep it locked up inside it should be allowed to run free and find others of it's own Polar Bear kind and so the couple decided it was only fair to do the same with their CDs. So they felt they should turn to you dear fellow Sinisterines to help nurture their CDs and let them meet your no doubt inspired CD collections where they can have rich and fulfilling lives. hiya people. i'm afraid this is another scarboro post, mainly for scarboro people, in case they have forgotten what they saw.... the set list was (something like): le pastie de la bourgeousie too much love magic of a kind word i know where the summer goes if you're feeling sinister don't leave the light on baby the model my girl's got miraculous technique *jonathon david (summer holiday, performed by phil and kerry) simple things the boy with the arab strap we rule the school family tree like dylan in the movies i love my car the wrong girl woman's realm legal man *i didn't write this one down (d'oh) and am relying on my boyfriend's none-too-reliable memory. he says it was here. if there are any others you guys can remember that i forgot to jot down during the gig, please mail me. i have to confess it was the best gig i've ever seen. it was helped by the fact that I MET STRUAN and nearly all the rest of the band afterwards whilst sat on a beach at half eleven (does life get any better than that?), but they also played really well, did a good collection of songs, were AUDIBLE for a change (see nottingham, september 98 for previous appalling sound levels) and everyone really enjoyed themselves, dancing when they could. fact 1: the girl on the front of 3..6..9 is called vikki. i know cos struan told me when he signed my poster. fact 2: i haven't seen anyone else mention this, so can i be the first to say that stuart's transparent bass guitar was phil lynott's (unsure of spelling) (from thin lizzy) and was a present from the band (aw). yes i can. mick keeps his chocolate in the same bag as his shoes. i'm going to stick my neck out and say i love my car *won't* be the lead track of the next single, mainly because it changes time signature three times, from three four to four four and back, and back again. it would never get played on radio 1. and it references the beach boys, who, as they released songs before 1997, don't actually exist in radio 1's eyes. cliff would have liked this. it mentions summer holiday. still swooning, gina x _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail sinister(a)missprint.org. Sinister: Beautiful, a bit tempremental

The sky really got its act together today. After yesterdays frivolous display of candy floss pink clouds on pale blue backgound it really had it all figured out... As I left the house it was a blank white canvass no messing around... just plain and simple. As the thunder rolled around the sky the canvass changed to dark purple. The colour began to seep into the world below. If you must know I happen to think that the world below looks slightly like the inside sleeve of 'fold your hands child' but with a few more gaps where fires have burnt down listed buildings. At least that is how I like to imagine it when I look out of the window. Feel free to disagree if it makes you happy. So then the rain started and the sky really came into its own. Sinking lower and lower, eating the tops of buildings and trees, but all the while remaining united in colour. "lightening never strikes twice" So this was what the sky was prepared for. This one off guest appearance and the sky was taking a back seat in the performance. Nevertheless the sky was certainly making sure all around were looking their best. The rain fell and dripped onto the leaves of dark purple trees leaving an inky trail in the gutter. The bright green and yellow bushes contrasted sharply and unrealistically. Lights flickered and people ran around shutting down computers and expensive electrical equipment. It was turning into a very moving and emotional show. So at long last, time for the lightening. The main attraction. And what did it do ? Nothing, it bottled out thats what. One incredible flash of light and then... nothing. All after such an incredible build up. The sky sulked and individual clouds reappeared. Sinister: is that a Hipflask in your pocket, or are you just pleased to see me?

well hello there... its been a while...i took a bit of a break...i've been detatched from everything,and in that time i've returned to see Belle and Sebastian touring and that The Strokes have taken over the world...oh my gosh..."The Strokes are best band to come out in the last 25 years" well i've got news for them...they obviously haven't heard of Hipflask...but then not many people have,myself and another member of this parish have taken matters into our own hands,and formed a band based loosely on Slipknot...we did try desperately to get the Belle and Sebastian support slot...but they just weren't convinced and frankly i think we scared them!...we all wear masks and boilersuits, not to make fun of Slipknot but as a mark of respect... because what they do is pretty damn funny,we played our first gig recently,behind closed doors,with our audience in blindfolds, we have to tone it down a bit as a couple of the audience had to be sedated afterwards!...we haven't got a compl! ! ete lineup as yet and we are loo king to recruit one or two of you in the near future...by the way you won't have a choice...if we decide you fit the bill your in...masks are not optional they are essential...we have plans to cover the B&S song "Dog on wheels" but our version will be slightly different....it shall be called "Dead dog on wheels"... but we have been busy...we have been sworn to secrecy until now...and we are treating this project just like fight club... the first rule of Hipflask is that there is no such thing as hipflask! and the second rule of hipflask is that THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS HIPFLASK! so don't bother asking myself and the other founding member of Hipflask the good mr paul field ( sorry for grassing you up mate but i don't intend on taking all of the flack for this myself! ) about any of our activities...because if we tell you 1) you will have to join us or 2) you don't even want to know what 2) is... what do we sound like?...well nothing like Slipknot...theres no growling...but there is feedback and distortion and of course masks...and thats all i'm at liberty to say...a friend described us as sounding like the bastard children of the Revolving Paint Dream in full flow...and I guess thats as nice a thing as anybody is going to say about us...but beware...we are ready...and intend to make unannounced live appearances in the near future...the Truth or Consequences Ep is recorded and we are currently in negotiations with interested partys...its been a busy few weeks... kids have fun at the picnics and gigs...myself and paul will be running the eye over a few of you to see if you have the right stuff to join us in our noise making activities...but i can't make anyone any promises... huge props to the lovely miss llew...for just being her sparkling self...she's all for Hipflask...so much so that we have made her an honourary member...theres no discrimination with Hipflask...females are welcome as well...and she will be the first person to hear what we have to offer... thats me all tapped out now and i'll slip safely back into oblivion... thankyou kindly... richard... +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail sinister(a)missprint.org. Sinister: Are you wearing your scarborough flares?

hello, wowee. I have just got back from the gig in scarborough, and have to let off some of my excited steam to the sinister family who will not think I am either a)mad or b)sad. They rhymed on purpose. There have been a few mails already, so i won't go on. Or maybe I will just because it was so lovely. Even though the security man spoke to me and said ' if you don't settle down I'm afraid you'll have to leave'. And I couldn't rally settle, becasue who can settle during 'TBWTAS' etc. So I jigged about quite a bit and managed to lean on the stage and try and take photoes of Sarah and Isobel from odd angles. When they come out i will probably be able to see up isobel's nose:) The set was similar to the one I saw at Barrowlands, except they did a few less and no snazzy encore. But I think that was because their were too many twee people in the asiels being a fire risk. Also scarborough was nice and I feel like I am still at the beach because I have half of it in my hair and ingrained into my cords. For some reason i felt so jubilant after the gig that I decided swimming was a good idea. Hence could not hang around on beach for band hence am now annoyed. May lie and say saw them anyway. Oops, you won't believe me now. cover blown. Why does Isobel have to concentrate so hard when she is doing her percussion stuff. she was playing her rattly egg with a frown of concentration I would usually associate with a physics exam. And afterwards she was puffing from the exertion. someone said she was like an asthmatic hamster and i think i agree. although she is an essential art of the band really, and i am only jealous because struan is always really nice to her, even when she had to start again like last night.bless. Oops, that got long. Going now to wash hair and chastise self for not staying on beach even in wet flares. grace x>x>x> --- And she spent the rest of the day separating the bits from the marmalade, or, if you prefer, the marmalade from the bits. Sinister: My life as a Bus Drivers enemy

Hello children, I hope I find you all in fine fettle. I'll be very late and probably last, again, in saying that I had a very lovelyicious time in Glasgow for giggages. And won't it be fun with this weekend in London with a double attack of Glaswegian pop with B&S and Camera Obscura and picnics full of cup cakes and fish cakes and Ribena Toothkind. As the other Ribena's are NASTY and EVIL to teeth. So be very afraid. There's not much a bed full of soft toys and a collection of antique cardigans can do in defense of EVIL Ribena... Umm.. Talking of EVIL things aren't BUSES EVIL. In particular the drivers of said mode of public transportation. This morning I got thrown off a bus for shops open at 6:30am not having any change to give me for my 10 English pound note and told to try the next bus behind. I thought he was pointing at the back to just get on anyway until he shouted at me to get off his bus. EVIL. I was then similarly told by that bus driver to get off and lectured about how it was my responsibility as a utiliser of said public transportation system to carry round exact change at all times. People wishing to travel on said packed bus were very impressed by my delaying their journey so I interrupted him and explained my situation calmly and clearly. Well OK I told him I needed to get to fucking work. Which wasn't nice of me I know, but I had been drinking alot of Ribena of the non-toothkind variety recently which as we know is EVIL. And it had not only given me EVIL teeth, but it had spread to my newly purple and thoroughly EVIL tongue. Well obviously that led to the bus driver ranting about how it wasn't necessary to swear. He was a right ranter. A bit like that lovely tennis player from Barcelona still trying to win her first Wimbledon A ranter Sanchez. Talking of which why can't it rain cause then we get to here Cliff Richard singing great songs. Bugger tennis, give me Cliff anytime. Funnily enough Sue Barker used to say something like that.. Umm... oh the bus, well then I got bored and said are you going to let me on o not one to keep his opinions to himself he let me know how it wasn't his job to throw people off buses and that I would be travel illegally. So I said fair enough I'll even pay the £5 penalty fare if I get caught, that is if they have any change. And I can tell you all it really is a thrill to travel illegally. I had an illegal seat, illegal buttons to press to inform the ranting driver it was my illegal stop to end my illegal journey and illegally got off the vehicle and everything... I really wish I was at home dreaming of giant caterpillars right now. Oh and come to the picnic on Saturday in Greenwich, London, Great Britain it should be nice. Like a fluffy bunnny on Felecity Kendall's lap. NICE. Strawberry flavour. Oh and don't worry about climbing up Greenwich Hill as I'm planning to get a shopping trolley, some strong wire and a few pulleys. Thus creating my own cable car system. I may charge a small fee as Shopping Trolleys don't come cheap these days. £1.. I ask you. Oh and don't worry about having correct change... Te ra, Martin P.S Damn, I just rememberd about paragraphs. The subject line was uttered by Barry Cryer on I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue which is why it's the bestest show on the Radio 4 apart from maybe that one John Peel does about how families don't really get on and things. Lots of people have been talking about Johnathan David. What is this? Some kind of Belle & Sebastian list? OK here goes... Popped into my local "small" record shop last week and grabbed a picture of some people looking awkward at a toga party. Paid 4 quid, got a penny in change and skipped home all excited. Threw it into the CD player, cranked flatmate's new amp up to 11 and pressed PLAY... Mmmm... Nice piano intro, tune already rattling around my head. Voice comes in... oh dear Stevie - did you lose your headphones? Start to enjoy things more as they start layering on the layers. Suddenly much happier by the end. File under Growers. Inlay reads like secondary school RE essay. Concentrate on the music. Take Your Carriage Clock is better. They seem more comfortable with a string section than they did with anything on Flappyclap. Struan sounds angry. GRRR! Middle distance runner is ace. I can't comment on the guitar solo since I'm not familiar with the earth-shattering live version. I'm only here for the whistling and TLOTMDR has some of the best recorded whistling since The Scorpions' Wind of Change. Of course the other great Whistling record was I Was Kaiser Bill's Batman by 'Whistling' Jack Smith. A top ten hit I believe until the scandal broke - Milli Vanilli style - that not a note in the recording had actually issued from 'Whistling's lips. David Moore mentioned a curious feeling of growing excitement apparently focused on this coming Friday. I think it's contagious. Must do some work.
