Ah. I had to say goodbye to Norwich, to UEA and to my pals last week. That was hard. I only met a lot of my pals this semester, and we had some pretty instant bonding. I feel closer to them than I've felt to people I've known for years. I have to say, I did get a bit weepy. And drunk. I got very drunk. Bearsuit (Norwich band) challenged me to down smirnoff ices. I did- two of the things, from full capacity. And I drunk more than the band. And they were more drunk than me. I had to keep up the hardened drinker image for Scotland, see. (even though, between you and me, I'm a total lightweight.) But everyone thinks its good I'm going. they now see me as a sort of free hotel in scotland. I suppose it didn't help when I told them that the streets of Glasgow are pavwed with indie kids, and told them about the late licences at pubs, the cool music shops, the endless record shops, the wonderful clothes shops, and the gigs, the venues, the bands you might see.... Still, I'm gonna miss it down south. Spent the entire week with my pal Darren, just slacking. It got to the stage where we didn't even bother to e mail each other anmore to say "wanna go to the bowl (uni cafe) for a coffee?". Instead I'd walk in, and there he'd be. (early riser, Darren. Always on campus from about 9am.) We chatted, we'd go to the pub, we'd wait for his girlfriend to pick him up. we'd do that for entire days. We'd do all sorts of things. Sitting outside when it was nice. Sitting inside when it wasn't. Talking about everything, putting the world of music to rights. you gotta miss that. Well, I gotta. Gonna miss Tim, and Sara too. Saras a darling. a sexy darling. Tim's a darling. A brainy darling. There's a bit of me that wishes I'd spent more time with them, rather than go off to see B+S. but then, I'd only regret not seeing b+s while I had the chance. So how is a girl supposed to choose? is Stuart as much fun as Tim? Does Chris make a good replacement for Darren? and Isobel vs Sara? who would win? (my money's on Sara. shes hardcore. I wouldn't fight her.) Then theres my other pals. Could Stevie ever be better than James Carnaby? Sarah or Sonja? Richard against wee Hellman? Hmm. Well, now I'm back home, and I got a tickly coff. Graduation is on the 12th. Gotta find a job. Big scary world. Me no like. Take it away. Get me a new one. A CLEAN one. right. thats about it. Sinister: take a gig and weild a whip

Having forgone the cooked breakfast (coffee in a flask and a chocolate croissant bought yesterday evening in a bag (the bag suits me)) I figure I have fifteen minutes... I'm daring myself to write a sinister post. I was reading ken's and thought of those little horse drawn carriages in Central Park. Or in the movies, at least. The whip thing sounds a bit sado though, so if you're into horses you can tell me what noun I should have used to describe the hand-held horse regulating instrument. Mrs. Carsmile has discovered gyllen tider. I have not, but am about to hunt for Ronnie Rinaldo, the easy listening whistling genius. I have a Japanese compilation of Swedish pop, in which Cecilia Vennersten sings Det Vackraste to charming effect. I'm listening to an old Coldcut mix CD and just got the sample 'Honey, I've got feelings I haven't used yet'... which might sound sinister but my hidden feelings are nice ones, if not for list mummy in particular, although a general gratitude is there in her direction for being a wonderful person. The music is doubling into a North African drill and I have five minutes. I know this is all uninteresting but indulge me. My horoscope says you should; though it's geared up for the American market hence all my best moments are in the middle of the night. See above, on the subject 'haven't used yet'. Mr. Moore, that was the pic they used in the Guardian review and I thought, 'sneaky!'... there's more going on here than first suspected. Is Stuart maybe dead? Are we witnessing an elaborate sham? Don't take my word for it, of course... me being no.2 dodgy witness (ta) but it amuses me to ponder absurd thoughts at 7:12 am. Gets me in the mood for spiralling costs and Hegelian aspirations of the day ahead. Sinister: my back has got ridiculous fatique

Hello, What a Belle & Sebastious two week it's been! Tour, new single, new video, unreleased songs on the radio, I bet they'll be having their own lucky bags soon, with a corresponding B&S photo stickers book (with a double folded page for a band member's arse). Blimey, *and* RAH (rah!) is just around the corner! I like the new single very much, the piano bit at the start is gorgeous, the second song does indeed sound like "I've been to paradise but I've never been to me" but also doesn't the string section at the start sound exactly like "There's too much love"? It's still lovely tho. And Loneliness of the Middle Distance runner is great, and they left out the metal guitar bits so I can use it as a backing track to practice some RAWK, great. Speaking of "metal".. Grr, Limp Bizkit cancelled their gig at Milton Keynes, I was the most disappointed. Apparently Fred Durst broke his back.. I bet he broke it at the mosh pit during the B&S gig in glasgow, I nearly hurt myself too. I am looking forward to moshing again at Royal Albert Hall, I hope I'll see Steven Wells. I'm even more looking forward to seeing Brian Appleton tho, I wonder if he's still as jilted as John was. I still haven't heard B&S play Beyond the Sunrise at the gigs, they better play it in Albert Hall, after the disappointment of Limp Bizkit I don't think I can suffer another blow. Talking of repeated blows tho... Sinister: Take your french toast and shove it

After drinking a liter of vodka and red bulls!! before going to see mogwai!!!!, topped off with a few slightly less desirable 40's of old english for the post show celebration on saturday night, my friend and I thought that it might be a good idea to get some sleep seeing that the sun was rising and the birds were chirping. One of my other friends had decided to turn in earlier than we did; he got a lot of sleep. I rent a room in this really cooky ladies house, and this is what happened when i woke up later on at about noon, when i had possibly my worst hangover ever, coupled with an insane adrenelin rush. Cooky landlady sticks her head through the door, hearing that we're up and incredulously remarks: "your smoking in here, my god, what are you thinking?" to which my response was : "i don't know what your talking about, i'm not smoking," as i exhale. She says "i made you guys breakfast," and closes the door behind her. I look to my friend and roll my eyes and scratch my head and he tells me that whatever she made looked gross and had been sitting on the table for about three hours. So i went to investigate, and the breakfast in question turned out to be none other than french toast, smothered in coagulated fake syrup set out with forks, knives, napkins, three mini hershey bars, and of all things, three plastic cups of room temperature *from concentrate* orange juice. The french toast looked like it was from before the flood, and thus it looked, in fact, quite gross. But it was a sweet gesture, and i didn't want to tell her to take her french toast and shove it. While i took a shower i devised a plan to get rid of it without leaving a trace. my first thought was to take it and chuck it all out the window, but upon sticking my head through frame i then realized that there was nothing to the throw it into i.e., a bush, and a big pile of french toast sitting outside my window would not be too awfully inconspicuous. For some odd reason i can't control my laughter during this whole ordeal, when the answer comes to me. I run into the kitchen and gather up all three plates, and all three sets of silverware and rush them back to my room, and then i realize that there is not a single old t-shirt that i wanted to wrap all of this cold, bready confection into, so i up and take it into the bathroom with me, because i figure that it'll flush, ya'know, but i didn't make it to the toilet before i saw the big stack of towels, spread one open on the floor, flipped each plate on to the towel, and neatly wrapped it into a pink package, and rushed all the evidence into my bedroom. My friends look at me and break into hysterics, and i almost fall on the floor in painful laughter myself. After shoving the towel underneath my bed, i gathered up all the silverware, and smeared each of them around in the left over syrup so as to give the impression of it having been used, and then carried all three plates and the silverware into the kitchen, into which i stumble upon my landlady washing her dog in the sink. I leave it on the counter and return to my room, by which time we're all in a frantic rush to leave the house, and head into the city in preperation for the sunday night Mogwai!!!!!!!!! show. Upon returning home this after noon, i found the house deserted and a sticky pink towel on top of another towel on my bed. I haven't seen my landlady yet. exploding seagulls? This topic was brought up at the sheffield sinister picnic! Mikes friend Kemp (withnail wannabe and proud claimant to being 'too lardy to be twee') came along and explained in alarming detail how to feed a seagull bicarb to explode it, but all it did was be sick and fly off. Maybe it exploded in mid-air. Doubtful really. the new house is becoming livable, we got a washing machine today (fortunate, as clean socks are now a rare and valuable item) the day johnathon david came out, we were given a monstrously ugly carriage clock by mike's parents, then went to buy the single, and found track 2 alarmingly appropriate. Sheffield city centre is currently smothered in johnathon david posters, it gives me the fear. Sinister: You probably work at an all night cabbage

ello babies my, what a lovely weekend, especially good at it started on thursday nite, which is always a good sign... Our indie schmindie disco was good fun and went down very well, although there wasn't as much dancing as there could've been. There definately seems to have been enough drinking though as the bloke who runs the place was well happy (although that could've just been the sangria). This means there will deffo be another one on July 5, come one, come all :) It was nice to have friday off and sit around in the sun drinking bouze and playing pool in empty pubs and thinking "ha ha, everyone else is at work!" We also watched the new (to UK terrestrial telly) South Park which was, rather inevitably, TITS. On Saturday we had a small, but perfectly formed, picnic in South Park in Oxford. There was much smut and home baking and also a virtual meetup with honey, linda, ally, calumn, carey etc in glasgow via four different mobile phones at once! For those of you who like to know these things our picnic consisted of me, mrs carsmile, liz daplyn, glampam, lucy, mark cassorotto, mark hester, chris brown, ken p chu and some of my oxford chooms. There was also lard licking and fires, but we wont mention that... We also came up with possibly *the* best idea (in my ever so humble opinion, of course) for a song request for friday, TAINTED LOVE. Ooh i can see geddes pounding his organ as i type... Sinister: number thirty-one

chart success. Who wants it? Well, I know it's silly, but for an hour and a half last night I did. I got home from my Sunday job at about quarter to six, in time for number twenty, but just after the 40-21 run down. Each new entry had me biting my bottom lip in anticipation. Even when the top 3 was 2 new entry's and 'Shaggy', I thought, *maybe?*. Half an hour later when I had played JD, TYCCASI and TLOAMDR three times over, teletext revealed it had charted @ 31. I immediately attempted to ascribe significance to 31. The best I could come up with is the number of the bus that goes past my front door. Any other (better) ideas from the superstitious contingent? What about in the U.S., where did JD chart there? picnics in the rain. Chances are the mild spell is coming to an end on Tuesday. I hope all planned picnics in Scarborough, Preston, Greenwich (Leicester?) go ahead *rain or shine* Sensitive souls huddled under blankets in kagouls, munching on soggy biscuits, ACE! THunder, light'ning, damp courdroy, MAGIC! This working week is going to be the longest ever (what with RAH at the end of it). Would it help to look through the eyes of a Gigolo? I don't think I could do that. Please keep me busy between now and friday. Sinister: cirrus

I bought all the EP's. Now I know what *being a rebel's fine* refers to. Lazy Line Painter Jane is the best I've ever heard. A man writes in the (formerly the Manchester)Guardian newspaper that Stuart Murdoch's original constituency are now served anti-depressant medication and opportunities in the teaching profession. Although the band, in the reviewer's opinion (and mine) are going from 'strength to strength' their fan-base is now a 'core audience of passionate devotees, misfits of too delicate a constitution to even stomach Pulp.' Whilst the review isn't exactly a hagiography I do detect some sympathy there. And whilst Pulp are a band I've yet to listen to I did go see James Macmillan's *Ines de Castro* at the opera. Although there was a torture scene followed by what can best be described as Francis Bacon's Screaming Pope brought to life and volumetrically encompassing singing that nearly reduced me to tears of horror. But we go there, mister reviewer. I think the EP's are the keys to this list: all the references I never got before. The monologue 'A Century of Elvis' is a bit like one of the Peel session tracks where the Go-betweens are name-checked. I taped peely but my recorder seems to have an internal respect of copyright law and whilst I pushed all the buttons and the magnetic tape rolled nothing was recorded. Thanks Richard for the name of a whistling novelty artiste, which I now have in my wallet and shall find, one way or another. I visited a Scottish castle this afternoon: grand doorway in a tower. There used to be avenues stretching towards the four corners; rose be-decked parterres assembled towards the distant winding silver river Forth. No more, but there remains a grand stair leading to jigsaw volumes and a painting on the first level reminds one of one's location. It is resolved on the roof: a panorama of treetops close; factories; powerstations semi and silvery waters and hills and mountains variously distant. There is a bird's nest in a tiny niche... empty except for a feather. I looked but didn't touch. Below was an art show. Good art, like serious proper internationally important stuff. They had to abseil the larger canvasses through the windows. A woman; the artist, grew up in the town under the shadow of the war, and recalls dreams of her father in the north Atlantic waters and her mother's hands as she kneads dough for the bakery: an endurance of love with some evervescent tingle of the horror of the bloodshed and unknown and the tender strength of feet and hands. Then I waited for a phonecall, which I seemed to miss. How the mind is variously focused and distracted: is it a power-play? JUst ConFusIon.
