Greetings and salubrious salutations my god i feel like i am greeting a friend who had disappeared into the amazon (Which coincidentally happened earlier this). My inbox is suddenly a flutter with sinister: emails which is nice. I have missed it so. I have consoled myself over the last few months with bowlie which is fine. Like Mr Gardiner, i just couldn't bring myself to unsubscribe from the list, out of loyalty i suppose and also for fear of missing out on a renaissance, which is a damn good thing. So the list is 8 and britpop is 10, i'm suddenly feeling old. It hit me when i was flicking on VH2 how old i actually am, i remember buying country house on the same day that my brother bought roll with it and listening to them both before admitting that i preferred oasis. I hope all is well with everyone, i know we have lost one of our numbers, and although i never met her i still have some of her list emails from the old times.... so...music....anyone catch devendra banhart and the hairy fairys on this tour? it really did blow me away, the show defied any expectations i had of him, we had the added bonus of donovan being present at our show, but contrary to reports, he did not take to the stage but according to the drummer he did get hideously drunk with them and then tried to drive home, to which the merchandise girl stopped him and crashed in one of their rooms..surreal? i'd say so stay cool jnthn +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail sinister(a)missprint.org. I'd been thinking the same thing, i.e. there should be a picnic for NYCers. I'm actually over in Jersey (work in NYC), but I think I might be able to make it as well. As long as it wasn't too deep in the wilds of Brooklyn. I have a bit of a propensity to get hopelessly lost in unfamiliar territory. oooh picnic! i'll be there baby (as should you linda! yes!) with red knickers on (i'm wearing some today in anticipation!) tho i'd rather be in tallinn. i've been itching for a baltic visit for ages. and sweden as well. tho luckily we have a little bit - and a gorgeous bit at that - of sweden winging his way here... Okay kids, you asked for it. Here are my TOP TEN BELLE AND SEBASTIANS: 1. Johann Sebastian Bach: During my GCSE music examination we were required to listen to pieces of classical music and identify them as Baroque, Classical, Romantic or Modern. The Baroque one was by JS Bach. The Modern one featured a wind machine. Call this an exam? Kids these days don't know they're born etc. etc. yawn yawn. JS Bach is famous for writing the theme music for The Antiques Roadshow, a Rock Opera featuring Hugh Scully as the Electric Gymnast. 2. La Belle Epoch: During which the French invented the bicycle, the beret, the stripey jumper and the stupidly long loaf of bread. Before these extraordinary advances, France had merely been known as "South Belgium". 3. John Sebastian: Lead singer with the Lovin' Spoonful, John was also the inventor of the Troob pedal, designed to make your guitar "sound like a baby". 4. Saint Sebastian: And Lo! he was attacked by arrowse, but he was okay cos he was a saint. Or perhaps he was Batfink in disguise. Ah, they never thought of that did they? The whole of world religion perishes before my keen mind. 5. Belle the big soggy dog: In the television programme "Belle and Sebastian", Belle was a big soggy dog and Sebastian was a humble accountant, trying to balance the books while Belle nibbled on his biros and shat in his bottom drawer. The name "Belle and Sebastian" was later adopted by a pop group, who used to do much the same thing. 6. Sebastian Coe: When I was young I used to get confused between Sebastian Coe, Linford Christie and Steve Cramps, because my sister had told me "oh, Sebastian Coe's the one with the yellow shoes. It took me ages to realise they *all* had yellow shoes. Sebastian Coe is now a Lord. If you're ever in Westminster, he's the one wearing the yellow shoes. 7. Belle de Jour: A film in which we get to see Catherine Deneuve's lovely bottom. I can't remember much else about it, really. 8. Mini Baby Bel: Official cheese of Captain Scott's expedition to the South Pole, the Mini Baby Bel has the advantage of being able to be used as a candle due to it being mostly composed from wax. Of course, Scott hadn't banked on cheese being the favourite food of the Husky dog, thus causing catastrophe after his dogs scoffed the lot then ran about sniffing each other's bottoms. Thus the expedition was DOOMED, as the only food left was cream crackers, rendered inedible due to the lack of cheese. 9. Sebastian Forks: An author who wrote a book called Birdsong about a sparrow who loses his hat and sings a sad sad song. 10. Bell End: Situated near to that wonderful town of Kidderminster, this village provided a popular destination for girls at my school who often confessed to going down there at the weekend. Blimey, I'd given up on this whole Sinister thing ages ago.I just couldn't quite bring myself to unsubscribe after 8 years. So if there's an attempt to bring things back to life, I'm in... I guess I should introduce myself really, since I've posted, like, once in the last three years. I used to be on here a lot, honest... But then life got in the way; things like travelling round the world, running around a lot, drinking even more, and occasionally pretending to work. Then last year I moved to the States. Well, not really - this isn't America, this is Portland. It's a different world. A world where they rip up a freeway to put in a new park, where bikes are twenty times more common than Hummers, and where you can actually get decent beer instead of Budweiser. A fantastic place to live, at least until Mt St Helens blows up again. And it's also the most indie city around (OK, Austin might dispute that) - Dandy Warhols, Everclear, Modest Mouse, Steven Malkmus, The Shins, Sleater-Kinney, The Decemberists, Elliott Smith... And to all those sinisterines I used to know, and haven't seen in two years or more; I'll be over in the UK 29/9 - 9/10, fancy a pint? I shall try sending this again. Re: BOOK Reports back from my flatmate on said book yesterday night were "it's disappointing". She promises a review on Freaky Trigger soon so keep checking your browsers, fact fans! Having only briefly been custodian of the book before handover to said flatmate, I can only talk of the book's physicality - what springs to mind on first feel? Canvas and glue. Bah, I prefer Dr Who novels. Actually, wouldn't "Canvas and Glue" be a good song title? And I'm not just saying that because I've taken to listening to "Concrete and Clay" every morning. Not the cr0ss-dr3ssing LP by Kevin of course, but a catchy little number from the olde 1960s which I recommend to you all. And if you have the tweeny bopper version by Darren Bryne/Burn/Burne WHATEVER then please can I have it? I only have the Unit 4+2 version which am GOOD but it am no CIGAR. Is the Indiepop list still running? I tried resubbing a couple of months ago and no joy, also the archives appeared to be down, but if all they're doing is talking about their favourite B&S albums in order then that is NO DICE for me eh. 1. Sinister 2. Arab Strap 3. Tigreleche (2 and 3 = interchangeable) 4-infinity. The rest of the others which I have probably not heard. My office is freezing today, I have had to borrow a jumper. Apparently, outside is suffering a heatwave. A mail from my friend in WC1 speaks of sweltering. It is as alien to me as the thought of Mickey's return to Dr Who being anything but UTTERLY APPALLING ie VERY VERY ALIENG but not in a GOOD WAY. Sinister: got married in a rush (well, after 4 years)

I wonder if this message will make it through... I feel like a friend in a far away country, scrabbling through faded entries in an old address book, hoping you still live where you used to... I still live here, in sunny Brighton. Still a language library drone, still a part-time poet who drinks too much tea. A new development is that I'm MARRIED, however. Yes, I finally made an honest man out of Matt and we have spent our married life so far getting drunk and cooking up exciting meals so we can use our new Habitat tableware. Many members of this parish were in attendance as we celebrated the nuptials with silly dancing, including Liz. I could write so much, but for now I just want to say how lucky I feel to have had her there on the best day of my life :) For my 8th birthday I played French cricket and dead fishes, and threw a tantrum. I hope Sinister will do similar. As it happens there WILL be some birthday celebrations going on in Brighton on Saturday (not exclusively Sinister ones, but the key elements of booze, sea, DDR and red knickers will doubtless be there).
