Hello all! I've been watching you from the sidelines and I'd just like to say: It's good to have you back in my inbox, I had a feeling everyone had drifted away! I, myself, have been putting off writing for a while now - I was waiting until I had some "content" to provide, you know, the sort of thing that all 1500 (ish) of you might concievably want to look at. So First things First: I went to the Perth gig - I did! Honest! Were any of you there? I didn't see you, sorry. I'd have bought you a drink too, I'm that kind of guy. so, content! A Mini Style review: Stuart was wearing his "Eat the Rich" T-shirt, but it had shrunk - so it was awfully tight. One for the girls! Stevie was all besuited and looking Mighty Sharp. As Per. Beanz was in "colours" The Jury is still out as to whether they are this or last years. Ditto. Bob and Mick were in "fashion shirt" and denim troos. Smart, but Casual. I couldn't realy see the others, althought the backing violin / whistling girl with the ripped denims was awfully cute! For the completists (and David Moore, if he still does this kind of thing) The Setlist! Stars of Track and Field Seeing Other People Dylan in the Movies The Wrong Girl Meat And Potatoes Lonliness of the Middle Distance Runner The Boy Done Wrong Again Electronic Renaissance White Collar Boy Then a wee break, while they worked out a cover of: Olivers Army (Including "Stevie Jacksons Impeccable Elvis Costello Impersonation") Another Sunny Day If You're Feeling Sinister Woman's Realm Fox in The Snow Mayfly Me And The Major To be Myself Completely (I think, I misssed it as I was at THE BAR) The Boy With The Arab Strap If You Find Yourself Caught in Love Judy & The Dream of Horses The Obligatory Encores were: I'm a Cuckoo and Sleep the Clock Around. So we only missed out on "Get Me Away From Here, I'm Dying" and we'd have gotten all of Sinsiter, just in the wrong order - Barbican? Hah! Electronic Renaissance was a highlight - with Struan "Feeling like Val Doonagan" as he was singing from the mixing stage - then having to get security to help him get back on stage! Another highlight: someone in the crowd stage left requesting "Arab Strap!!!" and someone stage right shouting "Good Idea!" Calumn's Mini review of the Perth Gig... Good. Other news? I'm not married(1), don't have a cold (2)and haven't camped out in any deserts (3) lately. I never made it to Mono to see the much-hyped Jens Lekman gig(4), so missed everyone that was going (5). Pretty much Business As Usual round my way. Sorry. Calumn 1) At least, I don't think I am - last weekend got pretty hazy. 2) My "Take a Break" Tip for Sarah & Stacy: Tea with blended whisky (Bells or Grouse works well) has all the benefits and saves the good stuff for when you can taste it properly! 3) Or desserts. 4) But DID get to meet him, so it's all good. 5) Is The Duke still "Keeping the Faith"? PS - Are we still wearing our badges upside down? Good morning, I'm not on a tape tree, but lately I have been listening to Casetteboy, does that count? OK I haven't really. He's a noisy little oik and I have a feeling he likes Harry Potter "that way". You know. The BUMSEXXING WAY. Of course I don't approve. I have moved house recently and when I unpacked my records the first thing I listened to was BLUES FOR CEE.. CAE.. Ch... some dude by the Fatima Mansions. ON SEVEN INCHES of VINYL. Fear it. And then I listened to the Wolfhounds, then Rave Nation 92 and then Scritti Politti. Then I got ill and I have been mainlining Scott Walker ever since. In the height of red-nosed snotty gribble, I do like to take a walk in the early morning and brandish my umbrella along to those soaring strings; o! those soaring trumpets! And, O! those peons SMITED by an over-enthusiastic twirl. Apparently the um, Inter-Terrestrials? or something, appear to be the gang du choix in trendy SE London WHODATHUNKIT. I read this on a bridge, where I get all my information from. Anyway, Stacey sorry to hear you have a cold. I have one too. My whisky of choice is Scapa. I know, shouldn't waste it on a cold but any excuse eh. Pop Issues: Frank Ferguson - I can't remember what their new single sounds like Charlotte Church - hooray! Sinister: hullo all

Erm well it's been a while...where to start? I'm not sure what to type about Liz as I'm feeling a bit lacking in eloquence this morning, but I was moved to be at the funeral along with so many of you, and thought it was a fitting follow on gathering in her memory. I'll say no more. I've thought of her and Rob during my travels. Another sinister birthday has ticked by, I was sorry to not be around for celebrations but hope to be seeing a few folk at the barbican on Sunday? I just got back from a month in the mainly high altitude desert that is Ladakh, Northern India and more specifically the western end of the Tibetan plain. I'll save finer points of socio-political discussion with big Stu for another time, but I learned lots (trekking, staying with families in remote villages, visited plenty of gompas, long chats with a Rinpoche) and erm better let folk know... I got married! Aside from both sets of parents being informed by an email ending (I paste:) "...p.s. Got married yesterday!! no joke - see attached photo and zoom in on rings :)" There are amusing photos of Sarah & I in traditional dress getting hitched by a Lama. One of the strangest phone calls on my return this weekend was with a fellow sinisterine as we swapped news, but I better let him share his... Of course the our £2 each wedding rings of 'pure silver' with "om mani padme hum" in Tibetan sold to us by a market trader turn out to be a bit closer to brass I think, but the £1.50 engagement ring does appear to live up to its sterling billing. Sinister: thoughts of intent in LA

As I write from my hotel room in LA, my thoughts turn to my sweet busstopper Sara, and what has become of her. Every time I come to LA, I manage to see her. Sweet, pure, my valentine. Platonic love, trust, simple and complete. I call, her cell phone number rings and another person answers. She must of cancelled it. It is sad that I don't know how to get in touch with her, and I wont get to see her when I'm on the west coast this time. DJing is not going well. Last time at the venue, the band didn't show, and their crowd of friends and bar customers. While it is not important to me personally for them to spend, it is of course important for the owner to make a few bucks so that she can keep the space open, and provide me with a place to spin. I do it for the love of the music, and honestly not much else. Its not easy to choose and to haul two crates of music and assorted gear from Jersey to Williamsburg. And its completely disheartining to spin to only the bartender and the uninterested people that run frequently to the bathroom, in pairs, for my self-deceptingly mysterious, but plainly obvious reasons. I have a girl I am in like with. I can't tell her all of what will follow, but I love the fact that she is too busy to see me becuase she needs to create the architecturial drawings for a beach house in California. When I meet a girl, I look into the future and see what it holds. If I cant see past the third conversation or unrequited sushi, I often politely demure, and decide this person is better as a friend. The architect girl I see - 5 years from now - her and I interviewed by the NY times about the house she designed in upstate New York, built on 20 acres. The picture in the article would have me standing behind her, with my hand on her shoulder, both following and helping. The house, of course, would eventually be well known and its aspects would be taught as the quintessential example of her style and design. Architecturial students, years from now, would make a pilgrimage to see. She would welcome them and chat freely. I would bring to the porch sun steeped, sweetened, lemon ice tea, and perhaps something to eat, depending on how far they travelled and their general niceness. Even if introverted and aloof, I would welcome them as I cannot turn down a conversation about design, furniture or any subject that makes my architect wife feel accomplished and happy. While I have only a raincheck to meet her for sushi when I get back, and have not actually broken bread or shared a spicy tuna roll, it is much too early to tell her any of this. But I am sure, at the right time, all of my hopes for us will be something sweet to say and will be said. Something so detailed and well thought out is, of course, sincere and true. Being as perceptive and insightful as she is, she will come to the same conclusion. On the face of it, it is all just a nice thing to say. But her realizing what went into the creation of an attainable and very possible futute, is what I hope to accomplish. Words are important but inaccurate. Intent is real. I read this, and I think that I dont really know this person, and she does not know me. Things may not work out the way I hope that they will, and conclude with a happy future. This last statement is meaningless. Things never work out perfectly tailored to the perfect future. I preach to my friends that life is about risk. I need to start living that myself. I've received my first sinister tape tree CD and it's a gem! Mmmm delightful! I had considered doing an mp3 tree or podcast or something actually... but I've a soft spot for old fashioned post-related communication. (And, admittedly don't exactly know how podcasts work... eeps!) Maybe after the tree is completed/collapsed we can upload the playlists/mp3 selections to share with everyone else. Maybe. We'll see. One thing at a time. In other news, I've been ill with a horrid cold/flu. Practically bed-ridden for the past two days. I managed to drag myself into work yesterday, but my death rattle cough sufficiently scared my co-workers into begging me to leave an hour into the shift. HA! Even with an amazing nonstop LOST marathon to keep me entertained, it was NO FUN! (The subsequent jungle nightmares and visions of giant spiders attacking me upon waking were a bit scary as well.) And now I totally empathise with those who have long-term illnesses like ME. I got restless after one day laying about, I can't imagine month-long stretches! Eeps! I ran into Stuart last weekend, freshly returned from America and all pouty about the preparation he has to do for upcoming shows. And what weird shows they're playing, too. Besides the magnificent sounding Barbicon gig - which I shall sadly miss :( - they're playing some strange ghetto festival, and helping open the new Perth concert hall. Coney Island looks fun tho. I've never been. His hair has grown out a bit, and makes him look years younger. Nice. He's also got new Doc Marten boots with his name embroidered in the tab! Like a posh footballer or something... only in ass-kicking leather! Cos he's so hard. HA! Hmmm. Looks like our other Glasgow friends, Franz Ferdinand, are poised for yet further success. Yay for them eh? I must say, I was secretly delighted by the results of the Mercury music prize this year. Those pompous Franz wannabies, Kaiser Chiefs, were certain they had bagged the prize, only to have relative nobodies Antony and the Johnsons scoop it up from under their collective stuck-up noses. Wahay! Plus, it was victory for Secretly Canadian, record label of my beloved Jens! There is justice after all. Well, a little bit. Occasionally. Wow. Charlotte Church sure is dirty these days. *Shudder* Oh, I can't wait for the new Camera Obscura album. They have a new website http://www.camera-obscura.net and it's so fab! Okay, I'm beginning to bore even myself here. Time to go and make another hot toddy. Ha! Sinister: California dreaming

Hi everyone Thanks, Honey, for the Stuart and ME link. I really enjoyed reading it. One of many things I liked was the detail about the California trip, because I´ve been having an obsession about California for over a year now. And the feeling just grows stronger, I don't know why. I'm inside of the dream of the golden land that I used to look upon as something childish. I was probably right, but I'll go for my dream anyway. My New years promise two years ago was to become more naive, maybe I will be, I never thoght so. Anyway I'll have to go there. I'm making a comic about a boyband who lives in California so at least I have to go and catch up some atmosphere. I'm afraid my comic will not be very authentic. I've never been to any of the united states. I've also never been a member of a boyband. But after all my intention wasn't to descibe the authentic life of a boyband. It's more about dreams, klichés, prejudices and feelings, and I know some stuff about that. Happy Summer's end to all of you. Hey kids I just checked the archive to see how long I'd been on this thing - first post March '99! And that was after some awkward lurking. Looking in the archive brought back some memories - I forgot how often I used to post (and how much nonsense I used to write!). So good to see so many first-posters, de-lurkers and returning old hands all at once; I thought I'd join in, despite not being quite so famous as some of the other old timers. I've never gone away and have enjoyed all of your posts over the years, so thank you. I haven't quite joined the ranks of sinisterines who've tied the knot - I still have 31 days of freedom left! I can't wait. Fiona said "this isn't a plea for the sinisterkids of the big city to come and hang out with me, but I just can't remember how you go about making a new city your own. So any advice would be much appreciated." Just get out there and hang-out. I was once that lonely person in the Monarch in Camden and I wasn't there half an hour before a bunch of lovely Sinisterkids spotted me! Does the old upside down badge thing still work? As Ian said this Friday's HDIF might be a good start? I might even put in a rare appearance myself - it might be my last chance before I move out of the big city for Brighton. Anyone else? It feels like my last outing was madly pogoing to the Aislers Set with Marc C at LSE, but that was ages ago and I must have been out since then. Well, long may this renewed vigour last! Hope to see some of you again one day. Sinister: I Said Never Again (But Here We Are)

It seems I'm joining in with the 'old list people coming back' motif, although probably from a different angle. I don't think I'm one of the best remembered Sinistereens and if I'm honest I've been unsubscribed from the list for almost as long as I've not been posting, only stopping to read the website with increasing infrequency. (Unbelievably my last post was nearly three and a half years ago) Although thinking about it I did organise a picnic once, even if it wasn't that well attended - Manchester never was a hotbed of tweedom. So the reason I'm back isn't because I've seen everyone else saying hi and thought I would as well (although that is great) but because the last time I found myself lost and alone in a big city, one of the few things that helped me was the kind words of some people I'd never met on a mailing list. Many things have happened in my little world since I was last here, many of them really exciting, the latest of which is moving to London all on my own for reasons of career. Everyone keeps telling me how brave I am, but between you and me I'm not feeling very brave. I've been here since July and I just don't know what to do with myself. Where do you start? Don't get me wrong, this isn't a plea for the sinisterkids of the big city to come and hang out with me, but I just can't remember how you go about making a new city your own. So any advice would be much appreciated. In other business, Fiona's burning question of the day is whether £20 is too much to pay for red faux-leather driving gloves from Top Shop and would it be advisable to try cutting the fingers off? I shall leave you now as I should probably go back to pretending to do some work before I finish work, but I'll try to be back soon with something a little less self-indulgent, or maybe I'll just fill you in on everything I've done the past few years. Well it appears that it's fasionable to de-lurk at the moment so I thought I'd jump on the bandwagon. Following the lead of oher folks who've reappeared here recently I feel the need to let you all know that I'm not married, I am however living in sin with my girlfriend and so once again the female half of Sinister is sfe from me. Nice to hear that everybody enjoyed Sinister's 8th birthdy celebrations recently, I was a bit annoyed at not being able to get to the Glasgow picnic, I was in Scotland at the time but had things to do in Edinburgh. On the plus side though I got to see the Pixies and Teenage Fanclub the next day so I at least got to hear some very good music over the weekend :o) It's been rather nice seeing posts from all the old posters again but equally nice to hear some new voices amongst them, welcome back and welcome to you all. as ever there is no actual Belle and Sebastian content here, maybe the list should adopt a second band for times when there is not much B&S related news (look I'm not really serious don't bother calling it a stupid idea). Anyway I'm going to see the Golden Virgins in Newcastle tomorrow, has anybody else seen them? Not only are they really good but they are the most fantastically ugly band to ever have existed.
