Dear Sinister:
Sorry for being out of touch for so long. Among other things, apart from
being a lazy bum, someone broke my hand when I was trying to touch their
knees, and my hand went all inflated like a marigold glove, and about as
much use. It didn't help when, feeling a bit better, I used my rubber hand
to open a door and it sort of slid off said door and got squashed in it,
making the situation somewhat worse. Ah well, mustn't grumble.
ATP was rather good. I met IAN THE DIRTY VICAR and RENER and NAL and DANKE,
too, who looks like that bloke off top BBC "sitcom" My Family.
Belle and Sebastian are playing Glasto! How about that? I'm going to Glasto
too, blinkin eck, ARE YOU? I know some of you are.. Is the siniglasto
mailing list still around? I think it's time for a revival.
Good to hear they're releasing their Cliff cover as the next single, too.
Along with two new traxx - Your Cover's Blown and Your Secrets. The second
of these they played on the radio and it's rather splendid. The first sounds
quite good from Stuart's description of it here, too:
http://www.belleandsebastian.co.uk/home/ , and if you're not that bothered
about buying the single you should still click on that link if only for the
picture of the lovely girly.
I was walking down the street the other day, on the way to the bus stop, and
I saw Mick Cooke. Well, it looked like him, anyway. He was walking past a
massive poster hung over a shop, which says, in six foot high letters:
"WALE'S BIGGEST COMPUTER SUPERSTORE". Well, indeed. It's almost as bad as
that advert for PATRICK MOOR;ES TELESCOPE i saw once.
They'll have to make sure they keep things like that out of shot when they
start filming Doctor Who here. I read somewhere that one of the episodes is
going to be about the Daleks attacking London. I hope they film that one in
Cardiff too, but from funny angles to pretend it was London towne. They'll
have a tough job: I think we've only got one building over three storeys
high. I'm going to try to get a job as an extra, too. OH HEAVENS ABOVE! THE
DALEKS ARE COMING TO TAKE OVER WALES, um, i mean, THE WORLD!!! I reckon they
can't refuse me with acting like that.
bye then
Robin

coachella was beautiful. it was hovering around 110 degrees (about 40 degrees in non us measures) during the show, yet people were still dancing and singing along. i was lucky enough to stand next to some fans got just as silly as i did, making me feel less...well, silly. many people waited in the long line to tell stuart and the kids hi earlier in the day when the sun was even hotter, i thought i was going to get heat stroke at that point, so i asked someone to request a song for me and hid in one of the tents waiting for the thrills to start. everything was great, even the heat, it seemed to draw people together, i still can't believe that i did it. i don't have a set list, but i am sure that someone else does, i just know that it was good. see some of you tomorrow nite at the seattle show...

my dear dear sinister
shall i compare thee to a virtual Byzantium. um no. SO anywaay how is
everyone? i for one am not well, i have a cold my head is all stuffed up and
i can't think straight- this is doing wonders for my uni exams at the
moment, sat the first of two english papers today but then i have a week
until my next set of exams which is means my head should be clearer by
then.
Damn it belle and sebastian playing glasgow and .01 cent flights from
Dublin
on the exact same day that i have organised my Parents 25th wedding
anniversary party, why oh why belle and sebastian did you not organise this
about 26 years ago so that i would have known to throw the party a week
earlier/later or on their actual wedding day.
nice to see political discussion taking place on here and although this
makes light of the discussion , remember when the simpsons go to china town
and Tibet town is inside a barbed wire fence and the tibetens being beaten
up. anyway i digress
have seen some great bands here recently, calexico two weeks ago , who
through various circumstances i met , then there was rodrigo y gabriella (i
think in gabriella i have found the woman i want to have my children with ,
which caught me off guard considering i don't particulary want children)
but
for her i'm willing if she is, but unfortunatly i think rodrigo has that
angle covered. If they do come your way though , do go see them , fantasic
guitar duo , mexican but based in Dublin the closest type of music i
suppose
is flamenco but it isn't really, there is elements of jazz , tango , and
soul and during one particular solo rodrigo broke into the bassline of 7
nation army. the same night we were treated to a metallica cover as well.
she uses her guitar more as precussion than a stringed instrument- *sigh*
on the organised day of fun ie, "day of welcomes" on saturday saw a great
little cork band called fred. they are corks closest thing to hipsters and
are very very good. actually the whole european festival thing they had
going on was great. In the english market ( food market with fresh fish and
olives and breads etc) they had an international foodfair with the emphasis
on slovakian dishes. One bar in town was giving free guinness to locals who
could name all 25 countries and foreigners who could ask for a beer in
irish- they had a helpful sign up which i thought was quite considerate of
them and obviously profit margins were quite good.
right i need someone to change the channel and pat my head
godspeed one and all

Holy Crap, it's the Sinister List, and here I am *not*
lurking. Hell must be enjoying a nice cold spell...
Actually, there is a reason I post and that is to say
this: I need your help (in the form of advice, not
anything you'd miss once given away).
The last time I was in the UK was four earthly
rotations ago, and by the grace of Whoever Oversees
World Travel Opportunities, I get to go back! In just
over a week, I will be on my way back to London,
Edinburgh and Dublin. That wasn't a chronological
list, but the story still applies.
THE NEXT FEW DAYS I'M FREE
AND THERE'S A TRAIN I WANT TO CATCH
I'm so excited! The problem is... I'm not exactly sure
what I'm excited about, specifically. I'm going into
this trip having not really planned at all, because
planning things too much can be dangerous and then
vacation might be not so much a vacation as a
pseudo-business trip. And what I DON'T need is a
pseudo-business trip.
So my question is obvious, of course: *can you please
tell me what I have to see while I'm there?* I have
approximately three days in each city, and even though
I'm escorting my mother and meeting up with my father
who is there on business, I will be on my own for most
afternoons and the nightlife, which I've never seen in
any of the three cities, so I'm open to all
suggestions.
London: I've already done Covent Gardens, Carnaby
Street (which I've heard lately is going downhill --
your opinions on the subject are welcomed), and the
usual touristy things like the Globe and Abbey Road.
I've already been told that I have to see the British
Museum, so what else should I definitely see in
London?
Dublin and Edinburgh: I've never been to either and
don't even know where to start; not even with the
touristy crap. These two couldn't be MORE open for
suggestions.
So any and all ideas would be GREATLY appreciated! You
can email kg11053(a)yahoo.com, and since my junkmail
filter is on, just put something B&S-related in the
subject line so I don't accidentally delete you...
Thanks for your help in advance! And for reciprocity's
sake, if anyone is ever headed to the Washington DC
area, I can let you know where/when to go where the
insane number of other tourists WON'T be swarming and
therefore piss you off, and I'll even invite you along
on my weekly walk past the White House (on my way to
weekend soccer games), where I've discovered you're
allowed to throw up the finger in His Fraudulency's
general direction, but you're just not allowed to SAY
anything rude without getting cross looks from
security...
Thanks all,
Kim

I heard B&S on the radio while I was having my breakfast yesterday morning.
Not much special about that, you might think. But I was a bit surprised to
hear an obscure album track - Family Tree - on daytime radio. But what's
really surprising is that I was hearing it while having my breakfast in
Lhasa, capital of Tibet. Truly, the band's reach is worldwide.
Of course, one thing about travelling in Tibet is that you have to address
'The Tibet Question'. Namely, whether the Chinese occupation is a good or
bad thing. Now if you listen to most people in the West, you wouldn't think
there was a question. It's a simple answer, right? The Tibetan culture is
being destroyed by the evil and oppresive Chinese government. Simple. Well,
actually, no...
It seems there's lots of well-meaning but ultimately ill-informed people in
the West when it comes to Tibet. They view this place as some kind of
paradise, ruined by the Chinese. It's simply not true. For starters, they
conveniently forget that until the Chinese took over, Tibet was actually a
dictatorship run by the Dalai Lamas and their advisors - just because
they're religious doesn't make it any better. And that Tibet was actually
only an independent country for about 40 years. And that before then, the
Tibetan army regularly invaded China, at one point occupying and sacking the
old Chinese capital of Xian. So much for a peaceful serene nation. These
same Westerners seem to think it's a tragedy that Lhasa and the other towns
have changed - well, hate to break it to you, but London's changed in the
last 50 years too. The Chinese have brought (and paid for - Tibet wouldn't
have them otherwise) electricity, running water, even paved roads. Do we
really have the right todeprive the people of these things just because it
would make a better photograph??? The people are much better off, much
wealthier, better sanitation and living conditions etc. And they know it. To
mis-quote Full Metal Jacket, it seems they would rather be alive than
free...
On the flipside, of course they don't have freedom of speech here. But then,
nobody in China does. A lot of monasteries and religious items were
destroyed in the cultural revolution 40 years ago. Same as in the rest of
China. But they're being repaired and rebuilt at a startling rate; they're
open to anyone again; and even the Chinese government officially regret the
cultural revolution (the people behind it were executed years ago).
So what's my point? That there are two sides to any story, and in this case
in particular, what you hear in the West is horrendously biased. Personally,
when I look at both sides, I conclude that Tibet is better off being ruled
by China, it's just that (as with all of China) it would be even better off
if the government changed. Independence would not be good for the people
here. If you look at the facts and conclude differently, fair enough; the
important thing is to consider both sides of the sotry first before jumping
to conclusions.
That's one of the biggest thing that all this backpacking has taught me -
there's always two sides to the story. To Western eyes, it would make sense
to prosecute the Khmer Rouge for what they did in Cambodia (killing one
third of the country's population in just four years). But the Cambodians
have decided not to dig up the past in the interests of reconciliation.
Whatever you conclude, yoj have to take that opinion into account.
Another example - in February I met a man in Vietnam who used to be a
teacher, before he fought with the Americans for the South Vietnamese army.
After the US left, he was forced to become a farmer; only twenty years later
was he able to set himself up as a motorcycle guide. He said that he doesn't
like America, because the US deserted them when they had enough money to
keep on fighting and decided not to. Now, you might not agree with him - I
don't myself - but it's a view you never hear in the West, that needs to be
considered.
Why am I saying all this? Why break the habit of several months by actually
posting something, only to talk about politics? Because I think it's
important. And because pretty much everyone I meet at home - and so probably
most people on here - completely misunderstand what's happening in Tibet.
And it causes resentment of the Chinese, which is unfair. And also, maybe
some people back home put a little bit too much trust in the liberal
media...
You want some more content to go with the rant? Erm... Well I did have a
picnic on the roof of the Potala Palace last week, does that count? I've not
even seen the I'm A Cuckoo single yet, and I don't know if I'll be back in
the UK in time to go to the gigs. Sorry...
As if the politics in Tibet wasn't complicated enough, I'm headingback to
Nepal in a few days time, where things are much worse... When I was there
last month, there were people killed every day, up to 500 people in one
battle, street protests, national strikes every week...
Big Stu
PS Let's see how easy it is to send an email which mentions politics out of
China!

hello readers,
I am writing to you from Dublin City Ireland, where we have been hosting
some get together of important European fellows and welcoming our new
friends from the East into our happy Euro-family. As part of this I went to
a fair where some Portuguese fellow gave me a little bit of white port and
some Irish guy who was working for the Cypriots gave me some sherry-like
concoction. It was most enjoyable.
I also caught some musical performances by people from around Europe. The
best were some group of lovely ladies who are basically the Slavic world's
answer to the Corrs. I think they will prove to be a great success, as they
have all the elements that make people like the Corrs (lovely ladies,
elements of folky music) only the lovely ladies are even more lovely &
revealingly dressed than the Corr-women, and they jiggle around a lot more.
Furthermore, the music seems like it is truer to the real spirit of folk
music than the Corrs' pop-folk stylings. These all conquering sensations
have great things ahead of them, but sadly I cannot recommend their name to
you as I didn't catch it.
I am excited about the way B&S are having a free concert in Glasgow on the
very weekend I was going there for a meetup of another internet forum. This
is an excellent development and one to be encouraged. I will look forward to
seeing some of you there.
meanwhile... didn't someone (Ian Watson?) bemoan the lack of ATP reporting
back. Maybe no one went - apart from me. I was very impressed by the bands I
expected to be impressed by: Sonic Youth, Le Tigre, & ESG. I realised that I
had forgotten how good Bardo Pond and Tindersticks are. Vincent Gallo was a
bit disappointing. Fursaxa seems to be endearingly artistic and destined for
great things. That's about it really. Oh, except that the Chris Geddes DJ
slot was surprisingly rub, especially when compared to the set that came
before it.
eh... that's it for now,
hang loose,
DV

Dear Sinister (oh look, formal!)
How are you all? I am very happy and content right now, since I guess I've
gotten myself, well... a boyfriend! ME! I know. And it's not like I hide my
sicko sense of humour, my pervy jokes or my inexplicable need for taking in
chocolate of some form every day. It's just nice, and we kiss and have fun
and he's probably like the best person in the world. Mmm. LOVELY, and
everyone likes him, which is always nice because it's hard when you hang out
together with your friends and they don't like him, but they DO. Yay!
Enough about that, though, because I'm sure it's the least interesting thing
to read about. I recieved a CD last Monday, yes a week ago, from our old
Sinisterbite Tom, a.k.a. corduroy boy, yay! It was nice, I had hardly heard
any of the bands which is nice because you're bound to at least like
something. it had lots of great stuff on it, like bearsuit, franz ferdinand
(that i of course had heard before), joy zippers and tons of stuff i can't
remember. oh yes, someone called half man half biscuit, but i was warned
that it might be too english for me. I think not!
I like The Streets by the way, Mike Skinner seems very nice. Plus he's got
this really cool bracelet, silver and it's... oh what's it called, like the
crap Pamela Anderson movie, er, oh yes! Barbed wire!
I got Original Pirate Material when it came out and I still love it!
I am waiting for my history class to begin, i am sure it will not be very
much fun since i'm not really a fan of having history. It starts in 30
minutes.
I have ice cream at home, and right now all i want to do is to go home and
eat it, now, now, NOW!!
Sorry. It's just who I am. Love it or leave it.
Kat have updated the website a bit, still no photos and the worst design
ever since there isn't any, but if you still want to take a peek:
www.katsite.tk
Should work, but if not, go via the unfancy address:
www.geocities.com/yelp_of_pain and PLEASE write in the guestbook! It is
empty beyond words.
I don't know why, but myself and Amanda, the nowadays blonde since her toni
& guy hair fashion show (she got an offer of modelling when we were out
walking about in Stockholm) are getting really nostalgic about Miami, we
just want to go back! It was hellacious some days, especially since the
evenings were so hot we thought we'd die, but we want to go to New York now,
and live our lives. Stockholm sucks, it is boring and horrible, except
sometimes, like when i think about me and said boyfriend. because he plays
in a band and he is really active with playing and they know other bands in
stockholm, and we met one guy whilst out on town who was really nice (not a
trademark for Swedes) and cool (he could've been in the strokes!) and who
was a one man band. it made me feel like it's ok to do stuff the
nonconventional way.
You see people, there are a lot of crap bands consisting of about 4 - 5
teenage boys, who always give you that bemused look when you say you only
play your music with a guitar and two voices, it's that "Oh, I thought you
meant a BAND!" look. Just because I don't play shite evanescence-alike
music. Sod off.
Also my project work for my three year, which we will be getting as much
time for as if we had that subject for a whole year, has to be done with
other people! Other people?! What happened to individuality? I hate working
with others (sorry supposed team spirit). I have to get my way with these
things, especially something as big as this! I am going to make some sort of
weirdo music project where i'll probably record a little something and maybe
put up a show in school with those songs. But i might get one of my best
friends Sanna to do that with me, and that feels better.
My fingers are starting to hurt, I better end.
Oh. And by the way. I showed my B&S tape with videos for The Boy last night,
he thought most videos were nice, although i must admit i'm giving him a
hard time for liking Isobel. Haha. Thanks Paul Arathoon for giving that tape
to me, it was probably the nicest thing anyone ever did for me!
Take care people, and still:
I like getting e-mails.
Hear from you soon, hopefully,
love
Astrid xx

Grrr...so this is the Bank Holiday weekend and it's wet. There was supposed
to be a little local mini-festival type thing taking place on Ham's Piece, a
field a short distance from my house, but I suspect it'll be a washout.
Mind you, one of the bands playing is called Gimpsuit so maybe it's best
avoided anyway!
I'm going to see Franz Ferdinand at Brookes uni student union tonight
though, and it has to clear up for Fun in the Parks (funfair! band tent!
soundsystem tent! Japanese noodle bar!) on Monday - doesn't it? With any
luck I shall also make it up to Needles Wine Bar, Clipstone St. for this
too:
SETTLEFISH (rare uk visit from italian deep elm records bruisers
specialising in powerful melodic heaviness)
THAT FUCKING TANK (baritone guitar and drum terror duo from members
of kill yourself - duck and cover!)
PRAGUE (london indie-rock three - or is it four? - piece in denial
that its not '94 anymore)
MY DEAR KILLER (nick drake meets gastr del sol)
SUNDAY MAY 2nd - doors 19.30, first band 20.00
One of the bands here meant the original e-mail didn't make it through my
work e-mail's Inappropriate Content filter - no prizes for guessing which.
Great news Linda about June 12th. I this is the definitely opportunity to
*finally* visit Glasgow on that weekend....it is really rubbish that i
haven't been before, I know, any offers of floorspace greatly
appreciated....
Listening to the Wendys version of Can's Yoo Do Right at the moment, a brave
choice of cover if ever there was one!
Mark.

so i am dumb, i am the first to admit it. i am staying at a hotel in north palm springs, a town that until yesterday i had never been to, so i had no idea that is pretty much separate a town. i was hoping to catch a bus or shuttle to coachella, but i am too far away for any of that. if anyone who is going has room in their car for me and a friend and would like a few extra dollars gas money please give me a call on my cell phone. the number is 206-351-7383.
tammy.
there is no silver lining on a mushroom cloud-ny times
