My, my Sinister! Young Mr Stoutish said we should send in reviews of DICKYWUSS. I figured, "Hey! I write reviews! I can do that tout suite!" You see, part of my job at my radio station (WXDU) involves me reviewing new Music, and of course I snagged the new B&S when it came in. So here's my station review, hopefully useful, but concise enough to fit on the cover of the CD. I'd be interested in what you collectively think. The Review: Artist: Belle and Sebastian Album: Dear Catastrophe Waitress Label: Rough Trade Rating: 4.5 *s out of 5 Whoo-hoo! A new start for B&S works wonders! Moving from their long-time label Jeepster, finding a new producer in the form of Trevor Horne (yes, the one who did TaTu) and having ditched Bel Campbell from their line-up during their US tour last year have all combined for their best album in a while. Horne lends them some forgotten hader rock sounds (Yes, forgotten. Keep in mind the band was born as a Metal Band called Rhode Island. Yes it was.) that create some great pop music like the title track, track one and eleven. They keep a strong grip on the pop sounds they're famous for, but tweak them a bit. There's all the orchestral strength you remember, but it shifts into brassy, more voiced sounds rather than oodles of strings. (2) And just cause they're Belle and Sebastian, there's some great twee stuff -- Lord Anthony, track 9, has been done for at least 5 years live and finally get the studio treatment it deserves. It's a heart-breaking little tale of Anthony, beat up at school and crossdressing... The .5 reduction comes from the Noise Factor Horne brings with him: in several tracks, esp. in the last track (the poorest outing), it stops being The Funk and starts to be The Pest. But still A Damn Fine Album. Worth all those days in 97 I spent drooling over Stuart Murdoch. All Tracks clean Recommended tracks 11!!, 1, 9 Play if you like: Good music. Dear Sinister Hope you all are very well. I have been staying in my native country, spending some time in my hometown, in the last few weeks. I always find a bit odd to come back here. At times is feel like nothing has ever changed. Or will ever change. Places and people looks like the same. To me at least. And I have been away for a while now. Sometimes is like nothing is the same, places and people. Almost unrecognisable, and I have not been away that much, after all. I guess is only about my perception of things. I was driving through the county this week end, over the hills, just to waste some times. Ive got very mixed feelings about driving. I can enjoy it very much, or I can hate it badly. Especially when I crash my car against someone elses new fashionable one. Ive bought my own nth-handed from my younger brother. He can drive. And love his car. I guess. The last time I have been driving without a destination we ended up in Switzerland. It is not that far as it might sound, indeed is just a few tens of miles from the little town I live, but is I rather nice drive flanking the lake. There was snow on the mountains. I didnt get anything that far anyway this time. I never feel adventurous when I drive on my own. But Ive been listening to my old tape copy of the boy with the arab trap, and felt in a good company. When I got to the top I didnt see the picture I expected. A few violent storms has brought down a lot of trees. Wheres the wood gone? I can see the five-hundred-souls village from there. I parked my car in a field. It was eleven o clock when Ive heard the bells ring. Ive waited to hear the mermaids sing as well, but all I caught was the winds murmur. Since I move to England, my first feeling, while being back in this place, is that I dont want be able to live here anymore. Might be I just want to run away from my past. The memory of childhood, for the few I have. Or adolescence, admitting I am only an overgrown teenager. And then, in turn, it would mean running away for my present. Which is possibly all I ever done. I often looked at the floor when people talked to me. I simply cant wait to be back in my small room somewhere in north London. The weather has been on rainy mood the last few days, and the sky almost obscured by light grey clouds. Reminds me someway of London, the days I dont like it. But the suns shining today, and I remembered why I like the Autumn. I think are the leaves copper and the bronze, the way the vermilion stain fades into a pale orange, and then yellow. Even the way the rain falls, light and subtle in the woods, and the smell of the earth beneath the pines. The dense fog over the pond lane, and the tickling of the drops over the lake surface. Rainbows. Looks like the Geenland coalition government is collapsing again! Some od the most politically astute of you would say " I told you so", but I really didn't see it coming! Poor old Hans Enoksen. On a political bombshell such as that I can carry on with the rest of the mail with the knowledge you're all absolutly hooked I haven't heard the new album yet, and probably won't until several days after it's released as it makes its way across the country from the cheapest supplier of CDs I can find, so shan't be tlking about that this time After my one ever single post, a long time ago before it were summer and I grew my minalmist sideburns, I finally feel the need to post, I've wanted to try and wait until I had someting relevant to say, but unsuprisingly this never happened and so now I will talk about the nearly relevant or quasi relevant or quasi-nearly psuedo relevant...Here we go? Sinister: Wife Swap anyone?

Whatup. Astute viewers of the UK's channel 4 in the past week or so will have noticed that the music in the ad for tonight's episode of "Wife Swap" is none other than the instrumental bit and whistling of TBWTAS. I am now tempted to watch. Does TV sampling pay anything worthwhile? I hope it throws some bling the band's way. Mr Stout made a request for reviews of the new album to come out of the closet. I hesitate to admit, but I've heard it, and the first time I played it I put it on while I was doing something else, and then ended up sitting on the coffee table with elbows on knees while it played out, the something else forgotten for the time being while I listened. The new direction others remarked on in the style evokes some kind of vague childhood memory of mine involving dusty radios and riding in cars with vinyl seats, passing kudzu on the side of the highway at 70 mph. A time before neon colors were invented. Concretely though, "Stay Loose" reminds me heavily of David Bowie's "Ashes to Ashes." This is a good thing, I think, but if your tastes run not to earlyish Bowie, don't fear. There have been lots of songs about baseball, but "Piazza, New York Catcher" has to be the best song about baseball ever. I am in love with it. There are others on there that I love slightly (but only slightly!) less, but nothing yet that stays with me like that one. Thanks to David Hewitt for articulating that peculiar angst felt by us middle-ish children of the list. I hope everyone's doing alright out there, however aged you are. hello sinister. jesus. (note: 'jesus' used in a rather cursing, sinful way, not to denote an address to the person (person?) belonging to said moniker.) anyway. jesus. i am a drama queen of the worst sort, i suspect. or, i used to be. i'd like to think in some way, during my time away from sinister or after the separation from old friends and quasi-lovers i lost some of my likely characteristic flair for the dramatic. but, reading some old posts and short-shorts and poems tonight, followed by some of the new, i realized i probably haven't changed all that much -- perhaps i've just figured out some way to cram as much high drama as possible into a terse line. maybe it's like learning to dance in a small space. and i've always liked that idea, really, thinking about the best way to fully extend yourself in some height of happiness or, whatever, energy in spite of the space you are in. if i ever learn to do that really, truly properly, i think i will have done something kind of like living. *** i am to go to california in three weeks now. and i haven't bought my plane ticket yet. not that i don't want to go, or can't afford to. i do. i've just ... put it off. some of the motive for doing so (though it wasn't necessarily a motivated delay as much as pure procrastination) is probably because, over the last month, i have developed a gi-normous fear of flying. (which means dancing in small spaces will become crawling up the walls of said small spaces.) i've never been on an aeroplane, you see. and i know the reason we all fear crashes is because, really, we think they happen more often than they do thanks to media coverage. but, thinking about it, plane crashes are a big (and not so common) news deal. a friend of mine said this weekend that perhaps i, like a lot of other people, prefer to travel by car because, in a sense, i can still feel the ground beneath my feet. but if i am going to see a love, perhaps it is better that my feet do leave the ground, and that my stomach does float for a while. maybe i can get it out of the way by the time i get off the plane and into the sunshine and all that. encinitas is about twenty minutes from san diego, i hear. and an hour and a half from los angeles. and about a half hour from mexico. and where i'll be, trying to figure out of life is about falling in love or falling out of it. maybe it's about both. maybe it's about moving everywhere in a spsce designed to nowhere (or everywhere). whatever the case, i am scared, and taking flight advice: board early if possible chew gum suck ice listen to music write envision departing plane to waiting arms, etc. look out window reserve aisle seat sleep relearn the art of crocheting envision self smoking glorious, satisfying cigarette yes, i will definitely take that last bit of advice. without a doubt. they say california is a black hole -- lou.xo. ===== www.somewhereinbetween.net __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Sinister: I'll admit today I've gone too far

ok, so I've just booked my ticket for the Astoria gig on Friday, 5th December and I've suddenly realised that this will be the centralest of Central London gigs I've ever been to, that's if you don't count the dreadful Capital Radio thing at the Hippodrome I went to when I was fifteen with Jaki Graham and Curiosity Killed the Cat (aargh!). I'm certainly considered odd in the office. Over lunch we were teasing one of my colleagues who owns a Ford Orion, of which he is intensely proud. His trusty steed has not been too well of late and as he enquired, trembling, about its state of health at the garage over his mobile phone, we had a little debate about whether the Orion is a bloke's car or a girl's car. I came to the conclusion that hatchbacks are bloke's cars and saloons are girl's cars as it is simply the pockets versus handbags thing writ large. I then had to suffer the indignity of having everyone else at table sidle away from me nervously, with worried looks on their faces. No, I think I'm weird for other reasons too. One big reason is that I have never fully endorsed the whole mp3 downloading thing. Not for any legalistic or moral reasons, but simply because I actually enjoy going to a shop and purchasing something tangible and taking it home in anticipation. So I'll be waiting for the proper release date of DICKYWUSS. In the days leading up to its release, I have begun to listen to all the other albums in turn and I suppose this leads me to belatedly add my contribution to the FISHYCLAP/TWATTYBUS debate. I don't actually believe FISHYCLAP to be an inferior album at all. I think it's all to do with the ordering of the tracks. My favourites are at the beginning (I Fought in a War and the Model) and the end (There's Too Much Love). ON TWATTYBUS however the gems are very much interspersed with the weaker songs. I'm always impressed when songs clock in at less than two minutes and are *still* wonderful....it seems like the epitome of the songwriter's art to have made a statement in less than the time that it takes some people to even get started. I wonder whether it was a trick picked up from Lawrence, as another song which is so brief yet so complete is Felt's How Spook Got Her Man from Pictorial Jackson Review. I wonder what happened to Mick Bund? Bassist on that album, co-writer of St. Etienne's Marble Lions and then nothing, so far as I can tell. hello everyone, I hope you are all fine & that everything in your lives is going well. I like a few other people here im sure haven't heard the new B&S album yet, but never fear as Londons XFM radio station are playing the whole album tomorrow night (30th september) on Xposure which is on between 11pm and 1am. In other news there is another chance to get your dancing boots on and your laughing gear round a few beers at Tigermilking on October 11th. Its at the Betsy Trotwood which is 56 Farringdon Road, and the nearest tube is Farringdon.
