Just one word of warning, popkids: they've got the ex-drummer out of
Menswear in them. Not good enough for Menswear? I think that says it all,
really...

Ok! I was bound to get round to Carol Ann Duffy sometime in the Monday
poem. A lot of us reckon she'll be the next Poet Laureate when Big Ted pops
his clogs. This is one of her most famous poems, but I've chose it cos it's
also my favourite. It's fairly self-explanatory. It's from her last
collection "Mean Time", published by Anvil, which came out a coupla years
ago and won every prize going...

Carol Ann Duffy
Warming Her Pearls
Next to my own skin, her pearls. My mistress
bids me wear them, warm them, until evening
when I'll brush her hair. At six, I place them
round her cool, white throat. All day I think of her,
resting in the Yellow Room, contemplating silk
or taffeta, which gown tonight? She fans herself
whilst I work willingly, my slow heat entering
each pearl. Slack on my neck, her rope.
She's beautiful. I dream about her
in my attic bed; picture her dancing
with tall men, puzzled by my faint, persistent scent
beneath her French perfume, her milky stones.
I dust her shoulders with a rabbit's foot,
watch the soft blush seep through her skin
like an indolent sigh. In her looking-glass
my red lips part as though I want to speak.
Full moon. Her carriage brings her home. I see
her every movement in my head... Undressing,
taking off her jewels, her slim hand reaching
for the case, slipping naked into bed, the way
she always does... And I lie here awake,
knowing the pearls are cooling even now
in the room where my mistress sleeps. All night
I feel their absence and I burn.

Todd,
While Keith's opinion is valued, and not taken at all personally....I must
beg to differ...yes...begging is so bla these days... I know...But hey. I
say, snatch the BMX Bandits CD up, and if you think it's shite...pass it on
to someone who's day it will surely brighten. Duglas, the lead singer, kind
of sounds like Kermit The Frog...and all the songs are sunny and
warm....They've always cheered me up when i'm down and in my most penniless
moment, wouldn't ever *think* of parting with any BMX Banditos. No can do.
Try it, you may like it.....You either love um or hate um. I love um. Keith
hates um. The world goes round. Tra la. Another connection is...on tour
Stevie from Belle & Sebastian played guitar with BMX Bandits on their last
tour, and sang a song even! *sigh* A good time was had by most.
;)
Kylie's got a crush on me.

Todd asked about BMX Bandits and the short answer is "covers, covers
and more covers". They are perhaps the best known most successful
covers band that does not call itself a tribute band and enter a bad pun
contest in the process (Bjorn Again, No Way Sis, anyone?) but fair's fair,
they do at least have the decency to cover a wide variety of artists'
songs. My mate Duncan, who is an authority on music of all kinds, a
brilliant drummer and someone who must suffer from Burning Ear
Syndrome the number of times I mention him on various mailing lists , tells
me that even the classic 'Kylie's Got a Crush on Us' is a cover, though
his usual brilliance in such matters is somewhat tarnished by the fact
that he does not know who did the original.
Anyway, I've seen BMX Bandits live, though it was quite a while ago, I
think '94. They were very entertaining. I think the singer was called Doug.
They covered a couple of Big Audio Dynamite songs then 'Hip Neck and
Thigh' and 'Light up my Life'. Doug (if that was his name) introduced
these songs by saying they were 'songs by a friend of his', making me
wonder whether he really knew Mick Jones. They did a song called
'Serious Drugs' and followed it up with "KGACOU" with the neat link "that
song was a bit dodgy, now here's a song about someone really
wholesome". The gig was at the sadly-missed Jericho Tavern, an
intimate Oxford music venue which has now become a Firkin pub,
prompting the kind of anarchic action 'a boy' advocates! Many now
famous Oxford bands played there; Supergrass when they were the
Jennifers, Radiohead when they were On a Friday (one of two bands to
be a right headache for publicity , the other being the 25th of May).
Bad BMX Bandits moment- every band has one- a couple of years ago
they did a TRULY AWFUL version of Jonathan Richman's 'That Summer
Feeling'. Leave well alone. I've seen Jonathan as well; he was ace,
though he didn't do 'Roadrunner' or 'TSF' he played all his other classics.
OK, I've rambled a bit but I hope I've answered Todd's question even if I
can put any ambitions of a career in rock journalism on hold....
Mark.

Keith is a bit harsh on the BMX Bandits.
They have some lovely - if slightly silly - songs.
OK there are some downright bad ones as well, but few bands can match the
sheer bathetic majesty of Top Shop Girl (to be found on the C86 album). I
don't really know what bathetic means, but it's a beautiful word.
Saw Guy Chadwick on Friday night at the Garage in London. Most of his solo
stuff was dull, but he did three cool old ones: I Don't Know Why I Love
You, The Girl with the Boniest Thighs, and The Eagles and Ramones. It must
be rather sad to get huge roars of approval for your old band's stuff and
only polite applause for your new songs.
Mind you, he didn't seem too bothered.
Lots of love,
Pocketbook David

Let me put in my vote for A Prayer for Owen Meany...it is spectacular. Not to mention it's the rare book that doesn't subreference his other works (i.e. the dancing bear motif, or the hotel motif...). I just reread it over the holidays, and I was blown away all over again. I grew up near where the book takes place, so it's extra special to me. I like to think his books might make it into the Canon someday, but I know I'm dreaming.
Irving's other books are good, too - but this is his crowning achievement.

When i was reading my messages today i really yearned for
some racist homophobic lunatic to stumble onto sinister and
really shake people up.There is undoubtedly intelligence out
there in sinister land but i think the dreaded curse of
political correctness and hippiesque remarks are the order of
the day.Lets all be in tune with belle's punk rock diy ethic and
spread a little nihilism around.......make your true feelings
known about things and lets liven up things around
here.............
