Sorry duke didn't mean to sound so irate, and thanks to David and
Katrina for agreeing, assuming you weren't being sarcastic, you
weren't, were you?
I guess my point wasn't that I thought that Tigermilk should or
shouldn't come out in original sleeve, or whatever. It's just it
doesn't matter that much. Now I don't actually own a copy, but I do
have permanent access to one, so maybe I'm more blaze on the subject.
I'd like to own the songs, yeah sure, but I was kind of hoping that
these little chats we have were more driven by passion and optimism
and love than for intellectualising what is simply beautiful. That
was my point...I think most of you probably agree. Maybe that doesn't
leave much room for discussion.
Incidentally, anyone in Manchester wanting a fix could go worse than
come to 'Smile' on a Saturday, where the DJ (no, it's not me) plays 8
or 9 B&S songs a night (or more if he can get away with it). You
probably already know that, but come and say hello.
That's all. Night night...

About the promoideas:
I ´m in it for the extra CD idea. But maybe not Tigermilk - how about a dub
verison of "Slow Grafitti" (title of the next album, eh?) instead, just
like Primal Screams "Echo Dek". How lovely wouldn´t a dub version of "Sleep
the clock around" turn out? Or a drum n´bass version. Or perhaps a genuine
country version featuring Johnny Cash... Or Willie Nelson...
Coolest of all: A crooner version. Maybe B&S could hire in Scott Walker.
Think about the great man starting to sing "Now listen sonny...". Vibrato
heaven!
Sorry. Had a bad weekend:-)
Next competition: Most unlikely artist to cover Belle And Sebastian.
How about that?

All this talk about bands selling out and / or turning to crap -- I don't
know...
I think sometimes we fans forget that, in addition to being "artists,"
performers are also going about their "jobs." This is what they've chosen
to make their living at and they have to pay for a home & food like the rest
of us. Maybe they don't want to keep doing gigs at night and working all day
at a crap job to keep body & soul together -- so they try to expand the fan
base a bit (no matter how loyal and rabid a small group of fans may be,
they're only able to purchase a small number of recordings and tickets).
And let's not forget the "ego" of the artist. Not the "ego-mania" type of
thing, but just the ability to do or create something that you believe people
will want to see or hear. Certainly someone who gets up on a stage, or who
records their music for sale, has a certain amount of "ego" or desire to be
heard. Else they'd be sitting up in their attic like Emily Dickenson writing
out lyrics on little pieces of paper and tying them up with ribbon. If you
feel you have something to say it's natural that you want to say it to as
large a number of people who will enjoy or understand it as possible. You
can't fault an artist for trying to make a living out of something as fickle
as catching the interest of the public for a time. It could all disappear in
a moment.
I believe some people "sell-out," but I think they meant to all along, and
you can almost see it coming from the start. It wasn't about creation, but
about marketing or whatever. Everyone has their favorite examples. But you
can't accuse every talented band that hits big through that twist of fate or
of being in the right place at the right time of "selling out." Or for
trying to maximize their "profit" while they can.
Some artists create crap from day one. Some create beautiful things for a
time and then, sadly, just lose the spark that enabled them to create beauty.
It's certainly sadder for the artist than for the fan, I would imagine.
I say, give them all a break. Every one of them. Be glad for what they gave
you when they did. And wish that B&S get their dream, -- fame, fortune,
relative obscurity -- whatever it might be.
(Sorry -- I just felt like defending the world tonight)

I'm sorry, but isn't this just spam?.
Since I've been on this list this guy has sent this advert about
four times, not once adding anything to this list that I can
remember. Now I know there are a few of us on the list who may
run or frequent clubs that play B&S, but these have been only
mentioned in relation to discussions or the imminent release of
a B&S single.
I operate a club that plays B&S. I won't say what or where it is
since many of you on the list have kindly done that for me already
(many thanks in particular to Keith). I wouldn't dream of spamming
the list with an ad for it!!!
Maybe I'm being finicky, but I'd rather download even the most
trivial B&S related mail than Dr Stride's monthly efforts.

um, all the messages sent to this list are saved and
available via the web. in fact, i'm reading this message off
the web site seeing as my mail is pants at the moment. the
url is in the trailier that gets appended to every single
list message. unfortunately the archive is currently missing
a search facility so it may take a bit of time to find what
you're looking for but that's still gotta be less work than
all that re-typing.
(paul, i know someone who has written a hypermail search
thing if you want one...)

Hello everyone.
This isn't a spam, it's an important message, so listen up.
This message is probably going to be our last. The computer has finally
died enough for us to not be able to rely on it. Umm, so basically we
don't know what the hell is going to happen. If you need to mail us,
please do so care of jeepster.uk(a)virgin.net .
With regards to the Belle and Sebastian merchandise, anyone who has
already placed orders, please give us a bit of time, while we try to
work out a system. Katrina is going to collect all our mail at
Jeepster, so your merchandise orders will still be processed, but they
may take a little longer than expected.
And as for the B&S fanclub and the websites ... well, they're currently
in limbo until we find out what's going to happen. We have no idea how
long this is going to take to get sorted (if it does at all), so please
bear with us.
If you need to get in contact urgently, please phone/fax us on
0181 560 1815 (reasonable hours only, please!). Alternatively, you can
call Jeepster on 0181 964 9432, but again, only if it's urgent.
We've got no idea how the hell we're going to get a new computer, but
we'll try to keep you updated as to how things are going ... somehow.
Until then ...
David & Katrina
alias lots of things including the B&S fanclub.

re:
2 Questions:
And some responses:
>i) What is a homogenised cultural muscle? Is there a less pretentious
term
for this part of the anatomy?
(a) I shall take the word pretentious as a compliment, for reasons which
might not eb so complimentary.
(b) I used the phrase homogenising cultural muscle to mean the power
which the culture industries (and in this case music) seem to exercise
to squeeze the best ideas out of the most interesting music and replace
them with hackneyed, lowest-common-denominator ideas of what will
_sell_,(meaning what has sold already). Not an absolute rule, but a
general one.
>ii) Isn't this being-let-down-by-bands-and-populism thing (something
that
miraculously ceases to bother you when you give up reading the music
press,
by the by),
Thanks dad. I did stop reading the music press for a period of about
five years, not that you were to know that, of course) and it didn't
prevent my mistrust of the music business. Neither did it diminish my
interest in the business's machinations.
> if it has happened with what seem to be some of the bands you
most like, as central a part of your enjoyment of pop as any other?
No, not as central as any other. Interested as I am in what pop means
and how it works, the central part of my enjoyment remains the things
the noise does to me. Long may it remain so. Otherwise, I might as well
be thinking about milk cartons. or whatever.
But I think I see what you're getting at and yes, a pop group having a
position of potential importance necessarily carries with it the risk of
letting folks down (even when those folks have aspirations for the group
which the group themselves never held or agreed with, ahem...). This
risk certainly does bring with it something of a thrill and generates a
feeling of trust which (were violation impossible) wouldn't be there.
The Sex Pistols didn't rip the music industry apart (which they said
they would) and thoroughly and consistently let their followers down.
BUT, something of the energy and strangeness in that band inspired a
generation to look for new ways to do things.
Belle and Sebastian have already inspired that feeling in some people I
know. I want that potential to have as wide and as large an effect as
possible. That's all.
Oh dear, I've probably bored you all stupid. Bad habit of mine.
