I got to see the new video last thursday on a programme called
'no disco'. There's a lot of kissing in it and a bloke smoking a lot of
cigarettes and it's hard to explain.

Subject: Re: Sinister: why this is important?
>but you won't be moved by it so much if you hear
it on the 'populist' radio because it's no longer
difficult to find. I maintain that part of the
beauty of the musics that 'we' like is the
relative obscurity, the fact that actually we
probably have to work pretty hard to get it, find
it, whatever. If it's easy we often just don't
bother. I don't mean this to sound snobbish or
whatever, it's just more to do with the thrill of
the expedition than the discovery itself. (and i'm
generalising of course!)
I do know what you mean about this but I think that there's a
lot to be said for straightahead commercial pop music as entertainment.
It's just a different kind of pop thrill to the one you get when you
find some unheard of gem and set out to tell the world about it. I love
that latest Janet Jackson single, for example, but to expect it to mean
to me what 'Expectations' does is like asking Coronation Street to be
The Graduate or something. Different fun.
But yeah, as Tom waits once said, the obsession's in the chasing
and not the apprehending...
ah, but this is what i found so special about B&S,
the very fact that i'd kind of given up hoping
that such music WOULD affect me in this way.
Me too. I genuinely believed I had grown too old and fat and
cynical and so the pleasure in finding Belle and Sebastian was immense.
And so I also end up transferring to them my hopes and dreams
for the perfect pop group. A pop group who can inspire the kind of
creativity which the Sex Pistols did. As I said in my previous post,
this is probably unfair and expecting too much.
But, BUT, I know how far pop music has inspired me to look at my
own life as something more than time to be filled in before it all ends,
I know how far pop has helped me to try to be creative in the way I act
and think and feel. And I know that pop can do this on a massive scale
(it just so happens that most of the bands which did these things for me
happen to have been deep, deep underground). And I think that B&S have
the potential to be such a band. Which is why I'm desperate to see them
do everything they can to take that chance, to make it happen.
And that definitely means finding a new way to deal with the
music industry which flattens and deadens its product, inevitably aims
at the existing mainstream.
And writing all this I'm reminded of The Pop Group's 'We Are All
Prostitutes', and find myself hoping once again that this is where
despair stops and tactics begin.
> but i think
that 'selling out' would be to start giving
concessions to the media and record company
bosses, not spreading the word and getting people
to buy their records.
Totally...
> I think Tim misunderstood
Oops:-)
about what i said about Tigermilk too, i was
saying that i could SEE that happening, not that i
wanted it to. I was kind of being cynical,
assuming, unkindly perhaps, that b&s will end up
like our other hopes, capitulating to the record
company whims and wishes. And assuming unduly i
hope...
Me too. And there I go just taking things to literally again.
Sorry, dukester. I should have known better.
again, sorry for the length of this one folks. Or
the two folks that read it. Hi Tim.
Alright fella?
Keepin' the faith in a box by my bed,

Here's my favourite B&S moment, from the time I was living in London, last year:
It was a Saturday night and I'd been clubbing, so it was pretty late. I
walked back from the tube station (in East London), tired but happy, because
I'd had a good night and my Walkman was playing "Sinister". I started
walking down my street and suddenly in the street lights I saw a fox! I
stopped and watched it for a while, and it must have noticed me then,
because it looked up at me. It didn't run away. We stood there watching each
other for a while, then it scuttled off again, between the parked cars, and
crossed the street to the park.
If only it had been snowing......

I know the feeling. You'll be happy to hear that there's a Radio One Session
version where the second vocal is sung by Isobel! It's quite good but the
instrumental is better in the original version.
I'm not sure if it's actually been on Radio One yet though.....

I've just the read the NME feature and it's a rum old do. Essentially,
James Oldham goes up to Glasgow and finds that none of the band
particularly wants to be photographed and they're even less keen on being
interviewed. The article details the journalist's growing exasparation,
concluding as follows:
"From afar, their success looks like a triumph for principled actions, up
close it looks like an accident of bad behaviour. After all, here is a band
who seem to object to doing interviews and photographs simply because they
can't be bothered rather than because of any radical manifesto. It's hardly
punk rock is it? Still it's their prerogative."
I don't think the band come out of it particularly well, and it seems like
this kind of thing is likely to happen more and more as they become
increasingly successful. And if the band don't want to do interviews, the
press is going to run the articles anyway, rehashing all this stuff about
them being truculent, un-cooperative gits. Is there any way out of this ? I
remember Dexys used to take out adverts instead of doing interviews, but it
does seem to smack of paranoia...

um, nme article (at least what i've read of it so far) made
me think (worryingly) of the huggy bear thing where they
turned their backs on the music press and got crucified for
it. see also: morrissey. don't the mags realise that
interviews / photo sessions eat up a lot of time and not
everyone's comfortable doing them? didn't they here the
radio one interview from last week (where chris said that
going in the nme was pointless)?
has anyone else read eno's diary where he insists on being
paid for a WiReD interview on the grounds that it was, like,
a day of his life that could've been spent doing better
things?
um, can someone ocr the article, it's too long for me to
type.
i actually liked the goldie / krs1 / boymerang remix btw
duke. would've prefered it if it had the original version on
there too instead of that other nonsense. looking forward to
the roni size / photek thing too (see roni size on that
radio 1 evening the other week? was very strange. drum 'n'
bass (ish) with real drummer and a double bass). b-side of
new propellerheads 12" is cool btw. can anyone name me a bad
record with sonar beeps in it?

ah, at least there's some benefit in having a write only

Hello,
Can anyone tell me what the new B&S video is like? I've now seen 2 seconds
of it on Hit List UK as they wouldn't play it (not even in the 2-hour
version on Sunday!). I've been sitting next to the tv, all ready to tape it,
but in vain....

That's uplifting news - it always makes me cringe, and if I'd heard it
before any other B&S stuff I would have written them off as sub-Deacon Blue.

I can! It's kind of a reality-soap-drama-programme which was on the BBC last
year. It's about the lives and loves of a group of young lawyers (all
twenty-somethings) who share a flat in London. I don't think it's on at the
moment, but I hope there will be at some point, 'cos it was really good.
