Hello Sinister, I'll keep it topical, shall I? After all, Sinister is nothing if not up to the minute, especially these days. But Sinistereens hoping for a glance of one of the list's most likeable contributors needed look no further than their television sets last night, as our hero appeared on The Tube, a documentary following around various members of London Underground staff as they go about their daily work. In the past seven and a half years, it would appear that Bapps has been elevated from his position on the barriers at Baker Street to one half of a sort of London Underground Cagney & Lacey, busting fare evaders and scammers across the network. He and his partner James are all over the capital, apprehending travellers trying to diddle the system, to play the pair for fools. Much was made of how good young Bapps was with a computer, which made me smile. If she's reading, I hope Honey will forgive me for that. Apparently the group have compiled a mix-tape of their favourite songs, and people can buy it in the near future. I read that said compilation will also contain B&S' take on The Primitives' Crash, but you'll forgive me if I don't treat this news with the same excitement as the announcement of, say, TWATTYBUS. Indeed, my only real reason for waking up Sinister from its long, deep hibernation was to salute Ben for his star turn on the telly. I watched the programme with my girlfriend, who I fear has always suspected Sinister as being little more than a legion of bedroom saddo devotees (despite being a fan of Belle & Sebastian herself), so it was a particular pleasure to prove to her that the list was indeed, at least partially, populated by normal everyday folk. Yes, Sinister, I felt proud of you for that primetime hour last night, so thank you. And with that, dear list, it's back to bed. It'll be morning soon, I promise. Sinister: bapps wants the ticket fraud to stop

Many thanks to Sam Walton for the heads up on Bapps' heroics on BBC! I had a little cry at the end when he manfully escorted the unruly gentleman off the premises. Star of the show. Not too much contents really, except also I think I saw Sam Walton at Rowan's bowling last Saturday - it may have been someone else though. I was feeling flat he seemed a mile away. It's been a while since there has been Sinister Bowling, to be honest. I wonder how many of you still read these e-mails. I'm going to keep sending them though (I even signed up using a new email address. Out of the nursery now!), maybe it'll be like digging a hole into the wall and then telling it all my secrets, and then filling that hole again. Maybe you would even reply. Or even post! eek. I just watched a Youtube video of "I want the world to stop" that includes subtitle - and I never realised that it had a line that said: "Let me step out of my shell, I'm wrapped in sheets of milky winter disorder" That Sturan - never stops writing songs about whacking off, does he? I also liked this thing I've noticed people seem to do on every Youtube music video comments now, where they'd make a "funny" comment on the number of dislikes on the video e.g. on Tracy Chapman "Fast Cars" there'll be a comment like "15 people have slow cars lol" I dunno what they'd do on B&S ones: 4 people never fought in a war omg! 6 people like leopard milk wtflolbbq 10 people took the carriage clock but didn't shove it!!!! rofl! No idea. That's all for now. Sinister: Sat Oct 22 - Belle & Sebastian special at HDIF in London

Hello Sinister! Thought you might like to hear about this... If it's October then it must be time for our annual Belle & Sebastian album special. The very first one of these happened by accident almost. Belle & Sebastian had announced that they were going to play all of "If You're Feeling Sinister" at the Barbican in London on Sunday September 25th, 2005, and a gang of people, many members of the Bowlie online forum, started to make plans to attend. As quite a few Bowlies were also HDIF regulars, it seemed like a good idea to have a night on the Friday to kick off the weekend, and seeing as B&S were playing all of one album, we thought we'd play all of one too - "Tigermilk". It was a funny old night really - absolutely packed with Bowlies, HDIF regulars and B&S fans, and it felt more like a family party than a regular club night. But as you might expect, with a room full of old friends who were meeting up for the first time in ages, there was lots and lots of catching up being done, and not a huge amount of dancing. The "Tigermilk" bit - we played all of the album in one go - kind of came and went, and I remember being surprised that while people danced it wasn't really a big joyous, communal event like the normal HDIFs. But it was fine - some people danced, some people chatted, it was a great, great night, just not quite what I thought it would be. The following year, we decided to do it again, only this time playing "Sinister" and not all at once, but spreading the songs out over the whole night. And it worked! So we spent the years after that working our way through the albums (skipping only "Storytelling" and "The Life Pursuit", the latter because the special last year coincided with the release of "Write About Love" and it seemed silly not to go with that one...and kind of equally wrong to go backwards in the album sequence to catch up this year....). All of which brings us back at the start of the story again - "Tigermilk". Here's how it'll work, then. We'll play all of "Tigermilk" over the course of the night - not all at once this time, but the songs dotted throughout the evening. We'll kick off with "We Rule The School" at 9.20pm, so please come along early if you want to hear the whole album. And that's that. There'll be no B&S songs from any other albums played, just the ten from "Tigermilk". Yes, just those ten songs. "The State I Am In", "Expectations", "She's Losing It", "You're Just a Baby", "Electronic Renaissance", "I Could Be Dreaming", "We Rule the School", "My Wandering Days Are Over", "I Don't Love Anyone", "Mary Jo". Sinister: An archive in the UK

Hello Sinister I don't have much of a 9/11 story. It revolves around going to the cinema with one-time Sinister member Hannah Brown on a Tuesday afternoon before our university terms started. It's a low-rise story, one with no relatives involved, no insight or observation that wasn't shared by everyone else watching on television. But even the most unremarkable things remain vivid when set against remarkable ones; ten years on I remember it all. However, in the inevitable "what were you doing on 9/11" conversations that I've had in the past week, one remarkable thing that I've mentioned more than once is you, Sinister. I've tried to explain to my friends that back in 2001, years before the social web or citizen journalism, when the idea of web communities or having a blog was a niche pursuit, Sinister that day showed me why being on the internet wasn't just for chatting about a favourite band. The list's reaction to the attacks made everything a little more normal and a little less despondent; it covered every emotion with warmth, intelligence and compassion, and its response and activity that day is just as indelliably inked on my brain as the footage second plane going in. Ken's post from the other week mentioned quite a few archive posts, and his links reminded me what an important part Sinister played in my life for about five years. I know it's shrunk down to almost nothing now, but I'm glad it's still here, somehow. Hello, A cake-related title to celebrate Sinister's birthday last Sat. Hope auntsadie gets to blow out the candles on the buka-cake. I have some claims to fame btw: Earlier this month I saw allycook96 and also carsmilesteve! It was pretty amazing as I hugged them both, and they both have list crush votes! I bet I was making someone jealous. It was in Embra it was. I was watching MOON HORSE VS THE MARS MEN OF JUPITER. It was amazing. I just looked on the crush list top 5 and I wonder where they all are now. I had sex with one of them you know.. oh, those were the days. Had to really clean my hand afterwards. That was my second claim to fame. Hello Sinister, It's been a while. I have tried to write you previously (in December) to talk about Bowlie weekender 2 and stuff, but the post never went through. It was really good but I've kind of forgotten about it all now. OH except Sturan got sonned by a dude over a Scrabble beef. Beaten by about 200 points, I think. Starry (formerly?) of this parish has made it all the way to the FINAL of the Scrabble tournament. Pretty good stuff. So really last time I actually sent a post through was last October. Sinister: Mick Cooke's zoo album - guest starring Ken Chu-bador

Hello Sinistrans, How quite the listy ether is nowadays, with limited B&S news and such and such. Well, content content, for music and music fans alike! YAY! Opening this week's Big Issue on the way down to a friend's wedding this weekend I was delighted to see Mick Cooke's release. I love concept albums. Love them. I'm a sucker for a story with my music. A long story, spanning a bunch of tracks. Lawrence Mikkelsen recommended Spearmint's Oklahoma! to me, thanks Lawrence, a top tip; I came to Jeff Wayne late in my life (I was graduating in 2006, how did I live so long?) and this year my dad carted me along to Roger Waters doing The Wall. That was pretty good, although I despair that a work 30 years old can be re-performed with humanity making all the same mistakes, I really do despair. Anyway, I digress. Jazz loving penguins? Lion dentists?? A crocodile synchronised swimming team??? What's not to like?! And it's for kids, so I can buy some copies (once it's not just on iTunes) for relatives with sprogs - the appearance of altruism when in fact it's an insidious plot to gateway drug them to B&S. Mwahahahaaha. My excitement is uncontained. And thanks to the new interwebs i present you the Facebook page to like [https://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=219245474776145&ref=notif&notif_t=ev…] I guess we're all on there now, in a smaller, separate circle of friends(?), rather than this rather more antiquated email list. Poor Honey. Poor us. Well, it'd be nice to be friends with sinistrans, look me up :) Well, if that wasn't enough to motivate me to send my first email to Sinister in about a decade...?, I picked up an Observer on my way back from said earlier wedding and flicking through I looked at an article on pensions, saw a face in the paper (sadly not also on their website [http://www.guardian.co.uk/money/2011/jun/19/pensions-public-sector?INTCMP=S…] and did a doubletake at the caption and the article. Ken Chu? KEN CHU? The same one? Looks at job title...yup! zommmmmg. I can hardly believe it. We're all growed up and talking about pensions! Is that so when we retire we can afford to go to more gigs? and buy more concept albums? And all those funny Radiohead releases with little bits of paper? I do hope so. So, Yeeeeah, wowzer to a double dose of Sinister related content in a weekend. I'm off to buy copies of DATZ (it's not TWATTYBUS or FISHYCLAP, but it'll have to do) for all and sundry, maybe with a note saying "if you like that, you'll love this" and point them to B&S's blistering trumpet solos.
