Blimey, I'd given up on this whole Sinister thing ages ago.I just couldn't
quite bring myself to unsubscribe after 8 years. So if there's an attempt to
bring things back to life, I'm in...
I guess I should introduce myself really, since I've posted, like, once in
the last three years. I used to be on here a lot, honest... But then life
got in the way; things like travelling round the world, running around a
lot, drinking even more, and occasionally pretending to work.
Then last year I moved to the States. Well, not really - this isn't America,
this is Portland. It's a different world. A world where they rip up a
freeway to put in a new park, where bikes are twenty times more common than
Hummers, and where you can actually get decent beer instead of Budweiser. A
fantastic place to live, at least until Mt St Helens blows up again. And
it's also the most indie city around (OK, Austin might dispute that) - Dandy
Warhols, Everclear, Modest Mouse, Steven Malkmus, The Shins, Sleater-Kinney,
The Decemberists, Elliott Smith...
And to all those sinisterines I used to know, and haven't seen in two years
or more; I'll be over in the UK 29/9 - 9/10, fancy a pint?

Re: BOOK
Reports back from my flatmate on said book yesterday night were "it's
disappointing". She promises a review on Freaky Trigger soon so keep
checking your browsers, fact fans! Having only briefly been custodian of
the book before handover to said flatmate, I can only talk of the book's
physicality - what springs to mind on first feel? Canvas and glue. Bah,
I prefer Dr Who novels.
Actually, wouldn't "Canvas and Glue" be a good song title? And I'm not
just saying that because I've taken to listening to "Concrete and Clay"
every morning. Not the cr0ss-dr3ssing LP by Kevin of course, but a
catchy little number from the olde 1960s which I recommend to you all.
And if you have the tweeny bopper version by Darren Bryne/Burn/Burne
WHATEVER then please can I have it? I only have the Unit 4+2 version
which am GOOD but it am no CIGAR.
Is the Indiepop list still running? I tried resubbing a couple of months
ago and no joy, also the archives appeared to be down, but if all
they're doing is talking about their favourite B&S albums in order then
that is NO DICE for me eh.
1. Sinister
2. Arab Strap
3. Tigreleche (2 and 3 = interchangeable)
4-infinity. The rest of the others which I have probably not heard.
My office is freezing today, I have had to borrow a jumper. Apparently,
outside is suffering a heatwave. A mail from my friend in WC1 speaks of
sweltering. It is as alien to me as the thought of Mickey's return to Dr
Who being anything but UTTERLY APPALLING ie VERY VERY ALIENG but not in
a GOOD WAY.
I am not going to any fvcking picnic in fvcking GLAS-GAY, thank you very
much for asking though.

I wonder if this message will make it through... I feel like a friend in a
far away country, scrabbling through faded entries in an old address book,
hoping you still live where you used to...
I still live here, in sunny Brighton. Still a language library drone, still
a part-time poet who drinks too much tea. A new development is that I'm
MARRIED, however. Yes, I finally made an honest man out of Matt and we have
spent our married life so far getting drunk and cooking up exciting meals
so we can use our new Habitat tableware.
Many members of this parish were in attendance as we celebrated the
nuptials with silly dancing, including Liz. I could write so much, but for
now I just want to say how lucky I feel to have had her there on the best
day of my life :)
For my 8th birthday I played French cricket and dead fishes, and threw a
tantrum. I hope Sinister will do similar. As it happens there WILL be some
birthday celebrations going on in Brighton on Saturday (not exclusively
Sinister ones, but the key elements of booze, sea, DDR and red knickers
will doubtless be there). Just email me for details if you'd like to come!
And do something pretty while you can.
Much love,
Archel xxx

Oh! I did just that once -- about 6 years ago in a pub in London the night before the first Bowlie thing.
>>goes up to random people(best keep it to blokes, i expect) and ask them if they are the Duke Of Harringay.<<
I didn't do that -- I whispered to people I knew, "Is that the Duke of Harringay?"

The hipsters used to be cooler.

Dear sinisterines
Well, I think a picnic is a great idea, for lots and lots of reasons...Honey is
telling me I should go, even though she can't, but I am a bit crap about
getting places and turning up at all, and me knee is playing up, and my back
isn't what it used to be, and as for my eyes...
actually speaking of my eyes, I was in an opticians rcently and by a tangental
leap the young whppersnapper of the optician and I got talking about Carey late
of this parish and of Camera Obscura..obviously puzzled by my acquaintance with
the young lady in question he asked if I was a musician. The temptation to give
voice to my alternative reality in which I am her out of the Delgados surged,
but I resisted.
Other lies less spectacular - maintaining the fiction of being Irish and
having visited Orkney - have caused enough trouble. So, I said primly that
I met her through a friend. And that friend is you, sinister.
I have enjoyed the lyrical posts of late summer, and the report from gigs and
of books, and the requests for reports of gigs and books. It's nice to see
sinister rippling again..
Honey and I have two new kittens, which I hope we can keep, as they are
invading the resident cat's happy home, but at the moment the five of us girls
are all piled up together listening to Echo and the Bunnymen - Honey is doing
sinister stuff and playing the music, Mitsou is chewing her paw, Scout (or
maybe we'll call her Frog) is dreaming of eating beetles, Splat is trying to
pretend we all don't exist and I am writing to you.
Take care.
Linda
PS Just read The Duke's email - Jens is swoonworthy - Katta sent us some
of his stuff and we like..

Hi everyone,
Just a short post to let anyone else who might've been interested that the extra copy of 'Just a Modern Rock Story' that was up for grabs, has now been claimed.
If someone should still want a non-free copy, contact me privately.
I'm able to buy books from my press at half off, so I could get a few discounted copies for those that are interested.
Wish I was in Glasgow so I could go picnicking :o(
tchau,

You may remember me from a long time ago, when I occasionally posted
things here. It seemed strange to be one of so few B&S fans in New
Zealand, but I stumbled across the band. I was at school with Honey a
long, long, long time ago, and when I found out what he was up to, it
was natural to look into these musicians he was so excited about, and
I did that.
The music was magical in a way I hadn't come across since the days of
the Television Personalities. They could have been bigger than the
Beatles, but in fact this never happened.
At the end of June, my family and I left New Zealand to return to
England, which we left in 1990. This was largely for family reasons.
Our arrival back at Heathrow was not the brightest, being on the
morning of 7th July. After overcoming the shock of these events, we
have started to settle again into the life of the homeland, where one
of the most noticeable things is the soundtrack to life. The music
that is played in supermarkets, cafes, pubs, clubs and lifts in
Angleterre, while maybe not the music I would choose, is so much more
in tun with my inner self than the music played in supermarkets,
cafes, pubs, clubs and lifts in New Zealand. Is this just me, or is it
like that for everyone who returns home?
If you want a gmail invitation, don't pester Honey: he's got enough to
worry about. Pester me instead. I've got enough to worry about too,
but that's another story.
