My Dear Sinister
Approaching Christmas evening, and no sign of snow, this year. I cant remember
the last time it actually snowed on Christmas day, something like I was too
young to remember, although it did on new years eve but is not quite the same.
Ive been driving around this afternoon because I am generally a bit bored,
therere nothing much to do in the countryside. Despite it is absolutely
freezing outside the lake wasnt frozen, but was good to see the reflection of
the sunset into almost flat surface of the lake, mixed with the stripped
profile of the winter trees.
Ive was listening to the first Palace record and this song called Pushkin. It
made me remember there is a song by Aerial M called Rachmaninov. And that all
by myself is a complete rip off of one of Rachaminov concerts for piano and
orchestra. However, Will Oldham citation of Puskin is not quite right, in fact
that is from Dostoevskij, but that doesnt really matter. And the prince
Mijskin said love would save the word.
Is love the answer? Love is the answer, I think.
Hope youll all have a lovefull Christmas time.
Yours
Stefano

I might have missed the in depth analysis of the new material played last
week on the peel tribute, no in fact checking the archives I haven't. Nobody
has even commented on it. My this list is slacking... or busy as we all are
towards the end of the year.
I just heard it for the first time online.
you should obviously listen to the documentary and all of the 3 1/3 hours of
part two and probably part three I just haven't got that far myself yet.
but if you're not feeling that brave, step forward 33 mins in to find B&S,
though best listen to the cat power track just before that, and indeed all
of the damn show!
But hot new B&S action kiddies. THREE NEW SONGS! hmm maybe somebody's going
to tell me I heard them live last time I saw them, but well get it there
anyway, prod prod, when you're bored on xmas day :)
So what do you think?
oh and seasons greetings to y'all. and even slightly unwarranted
but-you-know-you-don't-mind-really BIG HUGS to those I've met out of
cyberspace. and maybe to some of those I haven't.
more bad rhyming from SM.
I've had a sore 'thro-at' for quite some time now. I qui-etey like it
really. the bad rhyming rather than the sore throat that is.

ps sorry I forgot to prod you with the link that you can 'listen again'
online. you'll find the places you need to click here
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/alt/johnpeel/keepitpeel.shtml
Robin (bless him in his mittens) posted it last week, but since it's rather
worth doing so, I'm drawing your attention to it again.
pps I spoke to Ian Anscombe a couple of days ago. Isn't he a dear? He's been
ultra busy as he's wisely/mistakenly followed me into the world of
Occupational Therapy and begun the training this year. Which is why he
hasn't been with us in the Sinister sense.
I'd like to say 'yay' I got an email from Mr Carsmile Steve, but truth
beknown it was the Part I email eliciting his worky computer to say
"The college is closed until 3 January 2005, I will answer your email on my
return."
so there, he's promised to reply to the list not much after then. We are
waiting Steve.
I'll get another one now won't I? I await my 'ding' noise.

Hello everyone.
I'm set to go to a Snow Patrol concert in a few hours.
This was yet another band that was slow to grow on me
(add The Libertines and Belle & Sebastian to that
list, among others). After listening to most of Final
Straw yesterday, I'm wondering why.
It's nearly the end of the year. So for fun, I thought
I'd list ten of my favourite songs from this year, in
no particular order. Songs that I hope you've all
listened to and enjoyed as much as I have.
Snow Patrol - Wow (Probably my favourite number on
Final Straw.)
Keane - Everybody's Changing (Perhaps Somewhere Only
We Know is superior, but this was the song that made
me want to attend their set at Oxegen.)
Super Furry Animals - Juxtapozed With U (OK, this is
an older song, but still, I've played it quite a few
times in the last few months. I never realised how
amazing it was until now.)
Belle & Sebastian - Step Into My Office, Baby/Dear
Catastrophe Waitress (It was too close to call. I love
nearly all the songs on the album, but these two
played alongside one another make for a great
combination.)
Kasabian - LSF (Such a simple song, yet so
energizing...)
The Killers - All These Things That I've Done
(Altogether now..."I got soul, but I'm not a
soldier...")
HIM - And Love Said No (Probably my favourite of this
Finnish band's original songs. I nearly said Wicked
Game, but it's a cover.)
Stephen Malkmus - Fractions & Feelings (my favourite
number off the Teachers 3 soundtrack. More on Teachers
in a moment.)
The Divine Comedy - Our Mutual Friend (You knew I had
to include a Divine Comedy song eventually. It seems a
simple song, but the lyrics are great and as for that
instrumental...well, enough said.)
Graham Coxon - Bittersweet Bundle Of Misery (Call this
Coffee & TV-lite if you want, but it was the song that
convinced me how good Graham was on his own.)
I could also throw in some Fountains of Wayne, maybe a
bit of Ash (especially Orpheus) but that would take
too long. Franz Ferdinand were close to having one
song on this list, but then they started to believe
their own hype.
It's just as well that we've had some great songs to
listen to this year, and a number of fine
concerts/festivals/gigs to go to (especially Oxegen,
which I won't forget for a while, and The Divine
Comedy's concert at the Waterfront Hall in Belfast).
Because in many other respects the year has been
pretty lacklustre. How many films or TV shows have you
really been truly enthusiastic about? I personally
felt that there weren't that many. Even the new series
of Teachers was well below par. Oh well. I suppose you
can blame it on the cast juggling.
Enough complaining. Hope you all have a merry
Christmas and a great new year.
Take care
Psi
PS Those of you who watched the Teachers Christmas
special a couple of days ago may have heard B & S's
version of O Come, O Come Emmanuel playing in the
background at one point. Quite a pleasant moment
actually...it reminded me of the time they played in
Northern Ireland, just over three years ago (when
Isobel was still with them).

dear all
having once again had opportunity to marvel at the wonder that you all are, and the very very special community that you all help to make here (and you'll know why - some of you especially!), i just want to say:
a very very happy christmas to you all, and a wonderful new year. may you always find loved ones near to cherish and to... erm,... love, i guess, now, but not only now, and for always.
and lastly, whatever your views on (organised) religion in general, and christianity in particular, i hope you can all identify with the following wish, which is perfect, in my sentimental opinion:
peace on earth, and goodwill to all.
lots of love
JohaN
ps. anders: i got your prezzie today (and no, i haven't opened it yet!). i'm so excited - the wrapping already is just beautiful. and the timing - perfect! thank you very much (and you again, too, grainne, for organising!)

Dearest Sinister,
How are you all doing in the dreary lime and blue air that pervades our lungs? Are you finding your joints aching or your hair freezing? Boy, I sure am. Its cold and I hate it. Its that the-long-underwear-isn’t-helping kind of cold. Chill you so you won’t thaw and shiver under the down comforter.
Its beginning to look a lot like winter. To be truthful, I always say I’m a autumn person, but there is a soft, marshmallow spot for winter deep inside me. I love that crunch of frost on the grass as you run up to your parent’s front door. I love seeing my breath, visualizing what was just inside of me, feeding me. I love that the sun always seems whiter and wakes you easier in the winter. And there are thousands more stars to be had.
Please, do not, my dearest, mistake winter with holidays. I hate that stuggle-to-tape-the-wrapping-paper stress of Christmas. The family fights, the religion, the cynics, the lights, the overdone not in a good way kitch, the trees….I could do without the holidays. I like giving homemade and well-thoughout gifts to people, but I hate getting generic presents or giving them. The lights hurt my head.
What are your reasons for liking and disliking winter? The snow, the family, santa?? Reply back on or off list.
xoxo...hoho

well hi there!
caitlin tells us it's time to start playing all that music that reminds you
of this time of year.
and to that i say: fair enough!
but what about the music that will remind us of 2004 in a couple of years?
cutting to the chase: i'd like to hear about your "best-of-2004" lists, so
please send them to this addy [*] with best-of-2004 as subject. please send
lists with up to 20 albums.
if you can sort the 20 lucky ones according to their "ranks", please format
the list like this:
1 - xxx
2 - yyy
3 - zzz
...
the 1st will get 20 pts, the 2nd will get 19 pts, etc.
but if you can't decide if xxx is better or worse than yyy:
- xxx
- yyy
- zzz
...
each entry will get 10,5 pts (in a list of 20)
and that's that for now!
[*] and not to the list cos i think it would be fun to compile them and only
then post the results in the first days of january, ok?

Frosted cyclists, bookshop belles:
Last night I was ice skating on the outdoor rink, wishing I was a Victorian
with a hat and a cape. I was good at going fast, but also good at falling
over. In that spirit, I'll deliver this news from belle and sebastian, then
duck my head and skate away. Excuse me if I hold on to you, it's the only
way I can stop.

We seem to be lacking a plug for our hero SM popping up in London town this
Friday from parish member Watson. I seem to remember someone rather
ridiculously rapping his knuckles for plugging said club once upon a time,
seems more content-like than some posts if we are being strict, given
there's a fair chance of hearing B&S in the loveliest of clubs (save the
dormant tigermilking where sinisterines are the djs, of course ), it's run
by one of us, and Sinisterines go there... etc etc... anyway:
So who's popping out of the woodwork/getting away from work xmas dos early
for this one then eh? Just two years ago everyone met up for the very same
reasons and to sign Ben & Rachel's wedding card (ahhh! even his
murdochness:) + to dance like loons of course.
Bit of a busy week all in all, what with our Italian chum Stefano's birthday
the following day too [prod prod], but I'm hoping maybe I'll make it along
for the first time since I asked Ian to do me a membership card months ago
and haven't blooming made it since :(sorry sir).

hello all.
working in retail is the surest way to suck all the joy out of the holidays.
ive already been yelled at, embarressed, demeaned and all around shit
upon. sigh. and all i want to do is sell books, say have a nice day and
collect a pay check every two weeks. is that too much to ask. well, im
sure that others have far worse holiday woe stories than dealing with the
aggressive customers in a bookstore. and i would like to hear them. lets
share our greatest holiday 'i hate christmas' stories.
make me laugh and make me cry.
