Hello, As we are on the subject...... I have been listening to a bit of Northern Soul !! Well, to be honest, I know very little about it, so I went out and bought the "Wigan Casino Story" Volumes 1 and 2. Both are excellent.
Maybe I should buy more. But buy what ? I don`t fancy going to seedy holiday camps and paying 100 quid for a single (or spinning on my back either to be honest !). Anyone have any great insights into the murky world of Northern Soul ?
A murky dredged darkly majestic like world it is. From what I have read the band where in the throes of breaking up whlst recording A Northern Soul. They ended up splitting for a while Lo and behold the title track which is one of the most mind pummeling songs you're ever likely to hear is about Noel Gallagher when he left Oasis for a brief period. Anyhow enough of that as I have learnt that Oasis is a five letter swear word in many parts. The brilliance of this recording to me is down to Nick McCabe's gorgeous darkly textured guitar and the general soundscapes brought upon by the production, which I think owes a lot to him, and less to the much lauded songwriter sex symbol (mad) Richard Ashcroft. Emotions I think of are oceans, flying, darkness, isolation and in some way sheer survival. Oh god this sounds like and undergraduate record review So completely unlike Belle and Sebastian (do B&S balls only exist in Australia by the way? B & S being Bachelor and Spinster, they occur in the country and are an excuse for over drinking and other canoodlings nudge nudge). Anyhow I digress. A Northern Soul is their best album, and a great title, for all it's majesty, it is northern soul. I didn't really say anything much hear I guess, but I do recomend you all getting it, and then follow that up with a Dirty Three CD, and I will take to your with warmness.
