I hope Belle and Sebastian do get the oppurtunity to grace the TOTP stage. I don't know what it's like now, so I don't know if they'd be an antidote to anything or not. Many years ago TOTP was sort of important, and even if it's shit now, I for one would jump at the chance of being on it, if only for the oppurtunity of telling my grandchildren about it. My Aunty Ann has been dining out for years on the fact that Ted "3,2,1" Rogers once asked her out. She turned him down. If anyonne wants to see how the mighty are fallen, check out the following link. Apparently 23 pages contain the word Showaddywaddy, and this little gem is one of them. Isn't that Isobel and Sarah sitting on the floor in the front row? The other important reference point for seekers of Showaddywaddy-isms is the song "A Little Bit of Soap" by De La Soul, which (if I'm not embarrassingly mistaken) contains a sample of our new heroes just before the fade out. I wonder if their lawyers are as good as James Brown's. [Keith Watson] Or the Troggs which was the fact that caused De La Soul to delay their second album by over a year clearing samples (Gyppo bastards - have they not got enough money as it is, actually Reg Presley was on the telly a month ago or so talking about his obsession with crop circles!). Yes, "Don't stand me down" is brilliant, not quite as upbeat as the other Dexy's albums but brilliant nonetheless. It was my friend Kevin who introduced me to that LP a few years ago and we've waited for it to be released on CD for a long time,now it is, it's top. Problem is it probably will be reissued cheap in a matter of months, "Too rye aye" was released about 2 years ago with loads of extra tracks for extra cash, but it's now available for loads cheaper, i.e. about 6 quid. Incidentally, which Ultra Vivid Scene LP has no writing on the sleeve? All mine appear to have writing on them, nonetheless, totally utterly brilliant band. New Order are the band who spring to mind on this point. Peter Saville having got his design idea from an article in the Sunday papers about the theory of a "Mass produced secret", i.e. that you wouldn't need to put the name on the sleeve but millions of people would still know what it was. Besides the one that was in "Sinister" I can only recall seeing two other photos of them in print...one in NME and one in Melody Maker and both of those were just of Stuart, not the entire band. I suppose its no big deal, really, just a little quirk of theirs that I'm intrigued by. Also, is "Top of the Pops" really still going on over there. It's been on the air for ages hasn't it? All of my familiarity with it comes from the few clips of the program I've seen and the quotes I've read from musicians, sucha s the Kinks, who belly-ached about the lip-synching policy. Look what I found when checking out the runners and riders for this year's Booker Prize: "A network of tunnels, a subterranean world of drives and pathways, has just been completed beneath the Duke's estate, but His Grace is far from happy." Sounds cheerful enough to me this evening. The kids must've behaved themselves at school today. Extra marks for mentioning Fife's finest darts player, who's got an Argentinian wife. I agree wholeheartedly with your eloquent defence of TOTP. If it were consistently brilliant, the special moments wouldn't stick in our memories so much, The Smiths freaking out the entire nation, Nirvana being daft, Joe Dolce (or was that a recording?), the list could go on and on, but fortunately my memory's on the blink. I remember Dexy's being interviewed about that album on The Tube (I think). Another case of freaking out the entire nation. I like the name Top of the Pops. Reminds me of Jimmy Saville. They perform live now. Was Duke's New Order quote a deliberate reference to their insistence on playing live on TOTP, back in the days when it was considered ridiculous? That was the song they did wasn't it? Belle and Sebastian have been described as "exquisite" in a Spanish magazine. Have I said that before? Daisy, Daisy... ooh, new newsletter thing came this morning which answered a couple of questions i've been meaning to ask and raises a few new ones: there are two new videos, one for 'fakers' and one for 'pastie'. will we ever get a chance to see all of these or will we be doomed forever to see only the 15 seconds or so that the chart show can spare the time for? is the t-shirt laura the same as the cartoon laura? i think so. oh, and i can think of a few records without name or title on the cover - snowball by the field mice (plain pink 10"), that flying saucer attack / jessamine split single (fish), er, i'm sure there are more. oh, falling sentry blades is another song title that i've heard mentioned but never actually heard. it's from the original mailouts in june / july last year. um, time to start making friends in paris methinks... andy nowhere to sit nowhere to sit nowhere, nowhere, nowhere to sit. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . Not that I mind B&S becoming famous or going on top of the pops, it's just that I hate the thought of all the people I've ever played them to and then been told they were pants, coming up to me and telling me to listen to this great new band. It happens. Is anyone else embarassed by the fact that we have a popular music programme with such a bad name? and that other people in far off lands are laughing at our stupid '60's TV titles. I'd love to see B&S on 'the Pops' but with the slight apprehension that if they then rocket to the top of the hit parade loving their music wont be the cosy convivial habit it is for true believers - but I wish 'em all the best, mind. And Keith is right: having them on TOTP would be fantastic by showing what kind of music can be produced these days. I'd put B&S on immeadiately after some ne'er-do-well Britpop-by-numbers band and see if the surly lot can stand the juxtaposition (for all you wrestling fans) with the toppermost of the poppermost. The most unlikely TOTP moment I ever remember was when New Model Army smashed into the top 45 at number 44 with No Rest. They had to stick tape over the obscenities on their T-shirts (which were actually advising people not to take Cocaine) and Slade the Leveller (crazy name crazy guy!) prowled the stage snarling at some teeny-bopper in yellow dungarees who insisted on jigging about clapping her hands above her head like they were Black Lace. The only problem for me was the sheer volume of people of the place - to be expected at a free gig, I know. Much of the B&S music is really quiet, or starts really quiet and the noise of people talking often drowned them out (where I was standing anyway). But what I could hear was good. It seems like ages ago now - maybe time has altered my perceptions. Monica Queen done a turn as well. And I was standing next to Eugene Kelly. He looked bored. Douglas BMX Bandit introduced them (hee hee, it's all coming back to me now) as the hippest kids on the street, or something like that, which I recall finding amusing. The big downers were I had to wait for about hour to get a pint of QM beer, which tastes like pish (tip: If your in the QM go for bottled beer). And I had to listen to the Pastels (I admire the Pastels unique placing in Glasgow pop culture and am even thrilled when I buy records out of John Smiths on Byres Road and get served by Stephen Pastel. I just think his music is shite.) I think the concert was better than it would have been if it was in the park. Hey I shouldn't complain though. It was free B & S for me. Anyone else?
