Does anyone actually have the lyrics to Le pastie? I wouldn't mind them. God yeah Cast are shit. I was once dragged to a concert where Cast were playing and I just stood there with my arms folded whilst everyone around me was jumping up and down and singing. I was pretty near the front, and that Johnny something who sings kept staring at me like I was weird, that told him, the curly-haired scouse git; it's only a matter of time before the general public realise all his songs sound the same, his days are numbered. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . I don't know about anyone else, but I'd love to hear (and see) Belle & Sebastian play with a full orchestra, or even a strings section like Kristen Hersh's Strings EP. >I saw B&S at The Assembly Rooms in Edinburgh back in April (or May - I >Forget) and regard the experience as probably the best gig I've attended I was there too, any it was fantastic. Although the concert at the Mitchell Library, Glasgow, at the end of 96, was even better. But anyways, this reminded me to ask something about the Assembly Rooms gig. I saw a guy there with a b&s t-shirt on. It was red with 'Just a boy who plays guitar - Belle and Sebastian' in white on it. Is this person on the mail list? If so, where did you get the t-shirt? Anybody else got one? Also, did anyone buy an extra poster? I didn�t like the design at first, but soon regretted not buying one. One last thought. Is anyone going to The Sundays concert in the assembly rooms in November. (Tickets on sale Monday). Get in touch. [Keith Watson] I too was at both of these, but I tend to like the Assembly rooms one better - there was a hell of a buzz at the Mitchell library but the set was somewhat limited (All of If you're feeling sinister, A Century of Fakers and I don't love anyone - I'll scan the programme when we get a scanner in the office next week and post it to the list as a JPEG, in fact, I'll do this with all the various paraphenalia I've collected if people are interested). The Assembly rooms on the other hand had loads of my favourite songs on, and was a more varied set I thought, nonetheless, both I rate as two of the best concerts I've ever seen, I'd love to get a tape off of anyone who taped either, but as yet I've not met anyone. I know Andy Dean was speaking to someone that night who taped it, but he declined a copy - and later regretted it. But anyways, this reminded me to ask something about the Assembly Rooms gig. Why is it that some Belle and Sebastian songs bring tears to my eyes? They remind me of the past and of growing up in Scotland in the seventies. They speak to me of always being an outsider, of never having the right clothes to wear - "you can't afford a blazer, girl, you're always wearing clogs" is close to the bone. Of not being cool and not being aloof enough. Of not being cynical enough to transcend the crushing experience of unrequited love. The first B&S song I ever heard was The State I'm In - still, I think, the most perfect of all. I sat down on the floor and listened to this soaring, sweet voice and knew that everything would be all right. As a footnote: I'm finding the increased level of vitriol and defensiveness on this mailing list somewhat depressing. I like knowing what people are interested in and what their memories and feelings are - spurred by B&S and inspired by them, which is why we're all here. C [Keith Watson] You're right here of course - I mean, I think people need to discuss other things since there just simply aren't enough things to talk about on a regular basis regarding Belle and Sebastian - it'd be a different story if they released a record every week. Still It's interesting what you say, "The state that I am in" was also the first song I heard by them about 14 months ago or so, my friend basically put Tigermilk on and said "have a listen to this" to which I thought yeah yeah kind of thing, but by the end of the song I was like on my knees like I'd scored a goal in the world cup - bloody amazing. I grew up in Scotland in the 70's, however it's hard to attach Belle and Sebastian to that although I acknowledge it does make you feel dead young again. I really attach it to Gregory's girl growing up as this was where I lived at that time, and went to the school etc. so I''ve got a filmed record of where I lived when I was a kid. I do feel that Belle and Sebastian's success is purely a matter of time, it is stifled by their unwillingness to play the game (do the press etc.) which is fine, but even then, when a band's this good, it's pretty unlikely that they'll not break through no matter what - On the current curve of chart success it's looking like A Century of Fakers could be top 20 stuff - I really hope so, as there'll be plenty people around the world who'll not yet have heard of them (not "real" fans I suppose ?!), who'll get the chance and that, to me can only be a good thing. Sinister: The state we're in (already)

Paul's on holiday. He's the chief list admin guy. But while he's not here I get the dreaded responsibility, and I hate to ruin a party but... ... Princess Di jokes are hardly suitable and very distasteful. Please join an appropriate newsgroup for this sort of thing, and don't post them to the list, I'll regard it as spamming and may remove you. ... as much as the DJ debate is sometimes intriguing and entertaining, there have been a few very spiteful one-liners. This is flaming, and again this has severe punishments. Please try and remember that plain text (as e-mail is) doesn't carry irony and sarcasm very well. It's better to be polite than attempt wit with a double meaning. ... as for sleeper and other side debates, well when we created this list we laughingly put in a feature that censors words. Our test was on the band name that Mark Knopfler founded (can't write it as the program would kill this message), any message containing such words never reach the list. Maybe it should be set to stop messages with poor bands in them, could be more useful doncha think? and no, none of this is trying to restrict you too much. I just like to remember the original intention, that this list is named after a gorgeous album and for a brilliant band and should try to reflect both. I still believe that's possible, we've read letters from some of you that have stopped my heart and others that make me swoon, and we pass these onto Stuart Murdoch knowing he feels the same. So why don't we ever see this on the list? It can't be that you're not passionate enough or don't feel enough, after all, we all love Belle and Sebastian. Sorry for the moan, but when I lose interest in the majority of messages that get posted to the list, and when I receive a few complaints on the same line, well then I know we're starting down the wrong path. A few points (in reverse order of importance); IMHO, the best thing to come out of the Fall was Lard (Mark Radcliffe's sidekick, for the non-UK readers). All taste, be it music, clothes or DJs, is subjective - I'm sure lots of people don't like Peel or Radcliffe. That doesn't make them any less of a person (or even less of a music fan). Having opinions is good, it's what separates man from beast, but what happened to music fans' famous "live and let live" attitude? The reason a lot of indie fans (me included!) don't like the Spice Girls isn't just because they're not credible, whatever that means, it's just because we don't like their music. Who cares what their image is? I'd have thought that eulogising B&S on this list was pretty pointless, because we all already know how good they are - that's why we're on the list in the first place. I believed that people would be more interested in opinions / (light-hearted!) debate on (admittedly tangentially) related issues than in e-mails saying "I like Belle And Sebastian. How about you?". Evidently I was wrong. Anyone who complains that we're not "true B&S fans" because of a (inaccurate in most cases) view that we only got into them after Dog On Wheels is precisely the kind of indie snob that I've been railing about the last couple of days. If someone likes them now, who cares what they used to like? (I'm writing this as someone whose taste in the distant past included buying the first Kylie Minogue album, something for which I've long since repented and made amends!) Finally (cue wave of relief), if anyone wants to send me a tape I'll copy the B&S session tracks I recorded off the Evening Session this week for them. Just e-mail me and I'll give you an address (better not take too long over it though, I'll be off e-mail for ten days from next Friday (cue second wave of relief), and my address will be changing four times during that time, so it'd be easier to get tapes to me before then). It's nice to know that most people are completely gracious about the music, and there's only a few sad cunts who like the kind of "They sold out when they played Stones Bar in Edinburgh" attitude.
