In a message dated 97-09-25 11:42:04 EDT << i'm on a couple of other lists and it seems that every day, someone is recommending another band. i've noticed that i've heard no recommendations from this list (since i've been on it at least). now, i know we can't all be listening to nothing but belle and sebastian, so what is everyone out there listening to? >> I would have to recommend the Lilac Time, though the lyrics can be pretty silly at times. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . Sinister: seeing other groups

Looking at these five records, my top five of the year thus far, I am surprised how pedestrian they are... or at least how "mainstream". I guess this has been a weaker year in music because I just haven't bought enough records and it has been a bad year for hip hop. anyway..... 1. Belle and Sebastian- If You're Feeling Sinister 2. Moloko- Do you Like My Tight Sweater 3 Spiritualized- Ladies and Gentleman We are Floating in Space 4. Oasis- Be Here Now 5. Blur- Blur If you haven't heard the Moloko record.. do so. I drove three hours to Ear X-tacy in Louisville KY because it was the closest store that had Dogs on Wheels and they had SOLD IT ALREADY! But I did find a copy of Simon Raymonde's solo cd, so it was still worth the gas. Sinister: B'n'S chords

I'm not so good at working out chords from listening to the record, but then again, my version of "Dylan in the Movies" was identical to the one at the chords site, so here goes (note these may be a half-tone flat or sharp, as I can never remember when I've tuned my guitar a semitone up or down...) Judy and the Dream of Horses a lot of the chords are major 7ths, especially in the first verse, ie: Bbmaj7 Judy wrote the saddest song Ebmaj7 Bbmaj7 She showed it to a boy in school today Judy where did you go wrong Ebmaj7 Bbmaj7 You used to make me smile when I was down etc. after the first verse, the guitar part is probably just major chords rather than major sevenths. Seeing Other People intro D C F D C F A G F D C D D C We lay on the bed there D Bm Kissing just for practice C Could we please be objective G D Cause the other boys are queing up behind us C A hand over my mouth D Bm A hand over the window C G Well if I remain passive and you just want to cuddle D A Well we should be ok and we won't get in a muddle F We're seeing other people C A At least, that's what we say we are doing etc. the second verse skips some of the first part, the instrumental I think is the same chords as the intro? If you play this fingerstyle you can pretty much imitate the piano part from the album version. OK - from memory, which doesn't take an awful lot... Electronic Renaissance : Verse... Am-C Chorus (F-C) x 4 G - straight back to verse This may not be entirely accurate, I've been drinking champagne to tast out new office today! Funny you mention that Ivo. Class is the first band I interviewed in my fanzine (in the same issue as B&S interview). I wouldn't compare them to Belle and Sebastian, however. Class' sound is much more subdued (I think). Class has only two players, while B&S have 8 (with the trumpet boy - Anyone know his name?). Belle and Sebastian are definitely subtle, but the musical complexity borders on Orchestral. I would say that Class is more Field Micesque (if anyone on the list has had a pleasure of hearing this wonderful, wonderful band). Peter (of Class) doesn't really like Belle and Sebastian much anyhow, or he thinks they're ok, but he's sick of people like me making too much of a fuss about them. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . For information, I've completely reorganised the collection of guitar chords on my WWW site after a large contribution from Ben Smith - many thanks Ben. These are now in release order and most of "If You're Feeling Sinister" is there, apart from that pesky one "Seeing Other People" which sounds damnable tricky to me. There's very little Tigermilk - so contributions welcome! Oh, and I weeded out some duplicate contributions at my own discretion to make things simpler.
