Sinister: Tigermilk again

I too have just received a copy of Tigermilk and was really suprised at how good it is. First of all, there is much more variety in the sounds than on IYFS and I think Stuart's singing is more accomplished somehow. I had heard that B&S didn't want to rerelease it because they weren't proud of it but now I refuse to believe that. This got me thinking... you see my friends and I have a theory that really holds up... No band or musical artist has a long career unless their second record is better than their first record. This would make sense considering that the first record is usually comprised of songs written over a longer period of time, so the second record is a much greater test of the longevity of a songwriter. There is also usually a bigger budget for a second record. Anyway, I haven't heard Tigermilk enough times to call it better than IYFS yet and I would like to know what everyone thinks about this comparison. matrix ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . Sinister: recommended releases

I think I accidentally sent this only to brad yesterday, sorry if anyone is seeing this twice: As per brad's request that we make recommendations for other bands to check out, first let me give a second nod of approval to LambChop.....its real beautiful stuff. Rather than dwell on older records that I favour, I thought that I'd tip my cap to some newer releases: I myself have been spending a lot of time listening to "In Hospitalable", the new album by the BEATNIK FIMSTARS on merge records. Lots of fuzz and feedback and all that, but under it all are some very pretty songs. Also pleasing to my pop palate is "Square" by the ORANGE PEELS on Minty Fresh...real charming and bright pop...very fresh-faced in its sound. Then, speaking of bright, there is a new BaDaBing/Darla release from the Boston band BRIGHT. It's called Albatross Guesthouse and is a little more errr, rock-oriented (but not a rock record), than their self-titled release, but its still a gorgeous concoction of melody and space. Oh and back to pop, definitely check out OF MONTREAL's...I'm at al oss for the album title as well as the label....if Neutral Milk Hotel and Olivia Tremor Control and that whole Elephant 6 gang are pleasing to you, than you'll be charmed by Of Montreal as well. hey again. i'm on a couple of other lists and it seems that every day, someone is recommending another band. i've noticed that i've heard no recommendations from this list (since i've been on it at least). now, i know we can't all be listening to nothing but belle and sebastian, so what is everyone out there listening to? i'll start off with a recommendation of my own. now, i know a lot of you are tindersticks fans as well. well, i have another band. lambchop. they are i guess what the tindersticks would be if they grew up in tennessee and were raised on country music. there's about 11 or 12 members in the band, everything ranging from tuba to "open-ended wrenches"? if you like the tindersticks, you'll like lambchop. almost guaranteed. that's my recommendation. they have a new album out "thriller" but i haven't got my hands on it yet. but i recommend "jack's tulips / i hope you're sitting down" their first album. bye. -brad ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . The best thing I've bought in a long time is "Arkology" by Lee Perry and chums. [Keith Watson] I bought that too, it's bloody ace - love Errol Walker's "John Public" The second best thing is Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Warner Archives" The third best thing is Led Zeppelin's "Remasters" which has improved a lot since I sold the tape version a couple of years ago. It's much better if you can skip out the crap ones annd get down to some serious riffing. [Keith Watson] Bought the entire back catalogue a few weeks ago, totally ace too. On the indie front, I like "Chorus" by Flying Saucer Attack, which I was lucky enough to rescue from the bargain bucket. Really good muffled drum sounds. I also bought Chumbawamba, but I haven't got past the first song yet. I suppose everyone's mightily sick of it by now, but it makes me feel a bit homesick. But not much. [Keith Watson] Well... I fucking can't stand this sort of shite, used to hear them every week at this club we went to a few years ago in Edinburgh, my flatmate interviewed them for the Student newspaper, he played me the tape, it was all full of "You don't understand, the government's controlling the way you think" etc. you get the idea.
