Jackie (a french bird) sang the original and it was the theme tune to a kid's tv program that used to air on saturday mornings here in england in the vein of 'flashing blade' or 'heidi' (ie a many-parted serial dubbed rather badly into english). it even made it into the charts in the year it was released (which was late 60s. my copy was taken from one of those tv theme tune lps which i bought solely for the white horses track after looking for it for years). the only other thing of note that she recorded was the theme tune to rupert the bear, later covered by lush, of course. the other track that was mentioned, the other version of dog on wheels with the "backward sample on the end", was actually the same version as the one that was released just badly recorded off the peel show when he played it a few weeks before the official release. there's probably a bit of the following track tacked onto the end is all. and i should know - it was me that taped it many moons ago (over two years now). i'd always thought that white horses would be a great thing for them to cover seeing as it already has many of the things that make a b&s song a b&s song (those trumpets, sigh). the exact same track pops up on a tape that THE stu m did for the poetry cafe some time later. so here's hoping 8) oh, all this is in the archives btw. along with the answer to this week's asking of the 'is that a reference to johnny marr?' question. oh, and one last thing, can everybody turn off the bloody HTML thing so that their messages are readable to people using the archives? in netscape it's edit->preferences->mail & groups->messages, the top box there. thankyou. xxx 2 (8B andy and isn't it 'oN white horses, SNOWY white horses, let me ride away'? two words to add to the cartoon characters thread: "betty" and "rubble" trembling blue stars? there are sound samples on the web somewhere in australia, er, http://www.maths.monash.edu.au/~rjh/fm/ at the bottom of the discography. but only samples from the first tbs cd which, to my mind, is the better of the two. oh, btw possum, it was Ned who has the newt. homina homina homina... xxx +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list please mail "sinister(a)majordomo.net". Ummmm..... I guess I wrote my letter, which is receiving such a near-anaphylactic response, when I was feeling insulted, and sort of angry, and maybe my response wasn't the best but I thought a response was demanded. The only thing my letter was really asking was how transient do we think our affinity for Belle and Sebastian sort of is, because I was as rabid a Bob Mould fan as there ever was and I just- couldn't bring myself to go to his show (with the Archers of Loaf, no less) last night. I wanted to cry when I heard parts of his new album, and not tears of joy, either. Susannah- you're lucky, nobody whom I hang around with looks like they could be in any band except for perhaps a local Air-Supply cover band. Please... though... people.... stop calling for me to just leave the list. It's very, very insulting. I'm not sending you advertisements or even, I think, irrelevancies. If you despise me and everything that I think, well, just block me or delete my messages without reading them and, I promise, I will send fewer of them. Sinister: Madchester Meet up / Remember you're a womble

You might be in Luck there as that's probably when it's going to happen, me and Tag completely forgot to speak about it the other night, but Manchester just after New Year sounds like it's going to be the time that keeps the most people happy. I'm gonna phone Tag and discuss it with him tonight perhaps and hopefully we'll get something concrete arranged for the meet up so's that the people who are wanting to come along can... Just to point out to the new folks as well that this isn't a meet up of people who've already met, just a general meet up for the list and everyone's welcome, indeed most people haven't met in any case, so you're no worse off. Also Mr.MILLER, I had trouble even getting as far as listening to Superfuzz Bigchuff back in those days, never really liked mega shouty stuff in the past, much as I have tried to see what it's all about, it's never really happened too much. Although I do like the one on "Bug" by Dinosaur Jr. which basically has J.Mascis going "Waarrrararrhhhhgggh Warhrgrrrgrggrhgrgrh.... WAarrrrrrrrgh" all the way through it, I also like it in "Holy Ghost" by the happy mondays where it sounds like Shaun Ryder is shouting across to the bar trying to get his mates attention all the way through - a bit like "3 pints of lager and a packet of crisps please". Seb, I don't know what to say in that situation, although your touching plea for something to say has left me somewhat sad - it was like listening to Our Tune all over again. I've been trying to think of something, but I don't know what... sorry. It was dark when I arrived, and Keith was there and it was really good and we were going to go for a curry and some booze but then I realised I had forgotten my wallet and I was too embarrassed to say anything even though I kenw one of them would have leant me some dosh (probably Keith) so I kept quiet and then we went out and it was getting to be too late so I went to the car to see if I'd left my wallet in my small suitcase (from Herzog by Saul Bellow) but it wasn't there, like I knew all along, the only thing I had was some soul singer or other's greatest hits (i'm sorry, I've forgotten who it was, damn!) and I knew that it wouldn't do as a form of payment so I was really in an embarrassing situation and then I woke up, thank goodness! Sorry about that, but I thought that perhaps Keith and Tag would like to know what they're like in my dreams. Scary, despite their niceness. Beofre I disappear into the night on my trusty steed, a word of congratulations for anyone on the list who was listening to Mudhoney in 1992. Such resilience and loyalty is rare, especially in the world of pop. I think most people deserted them after their first mini-album, Superfuzz Migmuff, in about 1988/1989. I know I did. But I do think it's safe to say that I am twice as adorable now as I was then. And it's all down to Stuart Murdoch's gently evocative songs. I saw something new today - plastic-coated pornographic magazines! Honestly! I also saw some very rude pictures of naughty ladies and even naughtier men on the cover of a video! And all I was looking for was a copy of The European. I'm still in traction. Peter PS: I've seen The Avengers. I found the teddy bears terribly amusing, and I think I spotted a quotation form Andrew Dean. Okay, it's not a very good film, but the good bits are good, and I'm sure the next one will be better if they bother making it. 5/10. i just heard belle and sebastian on the radio for the first time in the U.S. i know this is old hat for you U.K. lot, but honestly, i *never* expected to hear them in the good old united states. they played "is it wicked...?" and the best part about it was that they didn't talk over the end of the song the way they usually do here. after they played the song, they announced the concert at the trocadero (in philadelphia), and said something stupid about it like "the smile event of the season" or something. for any philly listees, the station was WXPN. in other news, my friend julie and i have planned a philadelphia b&s pre-show party about which i have posted info on the jeepster meet-up news section thingie that mr. kitchen recently added. anyone interested should check there for directions/contact info. -matthew +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list please mail "sinister(a)majordomo.net". Hey kids! The "White Horses" song Joe Frese mentioned in his post was originally recorded by the Trash Can Sinatras as a b-side from the "Cake" era (circa 1990). It's a really great song, and it has no female vocal, so I can only assume Joe's tape features Isobel doing a cover. Can anyone confirm this? In a semi-related note, TCS are one of the few bands that have b-sides like B&S - you could fill a whole tape with them, and not be disgusted. In fact, the first thing I thought of when I heard "Simple Things" was that it was perfect so short - just like TCS' "Houseproud" and some other band's "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want". If you want to complain about how short Simple Things and Summer Wasting are, hit the repeat button. Works every time. :) Who's up for the Monday poem? Oh yeah, when is Honeypaul getting back?
