I think it comes from the Merchant of Venice and it's said by Portia I believe... "Mark how this little candle throws it's beam, So shines a good deed in a naughty world". I loved that line as soon as I heard it, quoted by my hugely learned mother at some appropriate moment.[BTW Isn't great to learn things by heart - so usefull says my Ma but then she seems able to quote at will from the complete works of Milton, Shakespeare, Dickens and Trollope plus Testaments Old and New - what a dame!] And I thought - that's what I want to do with my life - to shine like a good dead in a naughty world! What a noble ambition and what delicious language. And for some reason on the way to a job interview I happened to think of that line and I promised myself that if they asked me what my ambition was or what I wanted to do I would fix them with my steeliest glare and say "To Shine Like a Good Deed in a Naughty World - oh yeah!". Did they ask? Did they 'eck. They were far more interested to see where I had worked effectively in a team situation. Anyhow I'm tired but happy this morning. I did my first improv comedy show for 4 years last night and it went really well.Hope things go well for you. Dear list. I have just been for a very entertaining night at the Garage seeing an Elvis lookie-likie, probably while half the list were down at the Delgados at the Union Chapel at the other end of the road. Still, Elvis held its special moments, three changes of costume, with the appearance of getting a little fatter at each time. Only, Elvis didn't play that much Elvis, more a medley from the Doors to Nirvana , all in the Elvis club-style. very entertaining, I even shouted out 'Fox in the Snow!'. Favourite moment though was the appearance of Sean Hughes, really a resident of the Garage as he is a top pop ligger. I asked him what he thought of Belle and Sebastian the other night, and he screwed up his face and said 'good band, but the sound was appalling'. Sean doesn't lie. He's a good Irish sort. Salt of the earth. And he's on telly. Oh! and my B&S lookie likie thing happened again, and not just a passing resemblance either but a full on quality Stuart Murdoch lookie likie with cheekbones an owt. I think my watercress and spinach diet has left me feeling a bit light headed as I slipped on a wet tomato on the way home. you're not wicked if you don't care about this, but it IS something interesting, in a weird way... i was out last night, painting the town red, (not a very flattering color for a pale town like Santa Cruz) when i needed to stop at the nearest ATM machine to get cash. as i stepped up to make my withdrawal, what to my wandering eyes should appear on the machine's sickly green LED display but: "...so shines a good deed in a weary world." -Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory followed by all those nice things like "Please insert your card for service." isn't it nice to know that Willy's Whimpering Wishy-Washy Words of Wisdom didn't fall on deaf ears all those years ago? some horrible northern California stoner bank manager actually keeps it on his ATM's machine display for all passers-by and patrons to see. that made me get a warm fuzzy right here (point to throat). 33 days and counting til B*S are in Philly. i'll see you there. get siked. vermiciously, kim _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? Hi mrjake. I'm Jake. I suppose in a group of about 700 people, the chances are that there will be 2 of us. It just feels a bit strange, i don't know anyone else called Jake. Anyway I thought that I would rise up from the depths of the archives to settle the confusion, if there was any from the people on the list. Its mrjake from USA and Jake from England. See it's easy.
