Sinisterines, Some wry observations from the past few days: Rabbits and clotted cream, what's that all about then? Was it supposed to be funny? It wasn't. It was a waste of my time. Still, there's a lot of it about. WeeJay, has it occured to you that the reason that Keith and I always have the same opinions is because we're both right? More American bashing? I'm not getting involved. It was crap last time and it's crap this time. In case you haven't noticed, I'm crabby and I'm tired. We had to wait two hours for a cab in Manchester city centre last night, every single fucking office party in the North West was finishing just as we reached the front of the queue. On a brighter note, we had, however, been to see the Pastels, which softened the blow somewhat. I do dearly love the Pastels. I love the fact that they can create something utterly poignant while sounding on the verge of musically falling apart. I like their Silver Jews cover. I like Stephen's crap dancing. They've got a new instrumental song with flutes and fluttering guitars and it's quite the most beautiful thing. Also Goldmine, Manchester's legendaty soul shop has re-opened in smart new premises. It's called Beatin' Rhythm and it's full of great records. Today, I topped up my collection of Dead Boyfriend ballads. I would list every record I'd bought, but that would be boring, wouldn't it? Wouldn't it? Seeing the Pastels got me thinking about school orchestras. I wish I'd joined one now, but I can play one finger piano and that's about it. I couldn't even play the recorder, like the spoilt kids who got off freezing their goolies off on a football pitch during double games did. But where would we be without them? The combination of a teenage love of the Velvet Underground and a talent in the string section seems to have come up trumps a few times. Keith's conspiracy theory about the Melody Maker piece and the "mole" amongst us was interesting considering the article was written by one Ian WATSON. No relation, I suppose? I liked your post about Leith, Keith. Is that near Cowdenbeath, Keith? Don't forget to brush your teeth, Keith. These and other poems are to be found in my new book, "Juvenile and Foppish", which I'll be promoting at Paramount Book Exchange in the near future. Dandy Don John got me that, he's become very pally with the guy who works there since he started satisfying his appetite "specialist" vintage Danish magazines that they sell there. Beth, you'll be sadly missed, but I think I understand. Sinister: me a musician?

i forgot to respond to the musician question i dunno if id call myself a musician, maybe more so recently i sing, perty good though a limited range within comfort zone, and sanity zone i can do wacko vibrato but i sound like a raving loonie i dont play guitar because chords are too complicated i dont like using many fingers at once, i play bass fairly well though i havent practiced in awhile, i like slides, especially on my bass it makes cool little noises i play violin and ive actually done so successfully lately since i put away the sheet music and started playing along to my poems which have been slowly metamorphisizing into songs lately i spose my music if i had something to record more than my singing or violin on would sound like Elliot Smith, i have the annoying habit of making cuplets out of everything if i dont have a melody to follow, and maybe a less cool nick drake when i breathe too much i use too much vibrato anyway thats prolly more info than anyone wanted i wont really considermyself a musician until i have one of the instruments i really want to play: singing saw, pedal steel, theremin but im too poor to buy anything like that guess thats it, i need to be in a band badly, because i have trouble ccoming up with melodies that arent inherent in the words kay ill shut up now ive said enough today ----Ev np-Silver Jews-American Water, these guys sound like a more typical type indie version of Giant Sand, esp the singer and some of the lyrics, and that is a very good thing, the world needs more good giant sand sounding bands damnit -- I'm just a shy boy sitting in a house When everyone's gone >From now on ----Mark Eitzel: "Blue And Grey Shirt" http://www.angelfire.com/ma/dixiecluck +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list please mail "sinister(a)majordomo.net". Sinister: PLEA to all you good good people in London... and as I gaze into my crystal ball

Hello sinisterines As I gaze into my crystal ball, here is some stuff that makes me very excited about the new year. New Belle and Sebastian stuff ( any and always) *finally* new stuff from the elusive Dot Allison from One Dove any new stuff by Tanya Donelly a Beta Band album new stuff from Radiohead and err some more that I can't think of at the moment:) All sinisterines living in England at the moment. I need your help and advice. What are the best second hand shops in London??? I'm desperately searching for old One Dove, Belly, Air and St Et stuff. What record shops have quite a lot of rare and limited edition stuff? Also, since I'm poor what are some really cool second-hand clothing shops to visit? And generally funky places that I should pay homage to when I'm there. I wanna soak up all the great things I've been hearing and reading about London from mags like The Face and Select. So please send in your hard-earned info. Sinister: Sarah Laddered Isobel's Tights On Purpose!

Dearly beloved, We are gathered here today in the sight of Honey to bid a fond farewell to Beth, aka Madame Cholet, the saucy French womble cook who regularly serviced Great Uncle Bulgaria until he was forced to undergo extradition proceedings brought by the Clangers. It was at this point that Madame Cholet drowned her sorrows by seducing Orinoco, the only wrinkly nosed womble to have remained a virgin up that point. In the confusion that followed, Orinoco lost the will to post regularly to the Belle and Sebastian Mailing List, subsequent posts arriving at six month intervals, packed with on-topic facts. The loss of Beth is a great blow to the list. We will never see her like again. But life goes on. Who called WeeJay a homosexual? And who suggested that Lesley J needed a jolly good seeing to? Was it the same person? Is Northy back? Whoever it was, as Adrian might say, I have to meet you! I sometimes feel that the list has outlived its uselessness, but stuff like that soon cheers me up! Incidentally, for the benefit of Lesley J and anyone else tormented by lustful thoughts of Isobel in school uniform, there were pictures of her in that particular saucy get-up in Spanish magazine Rock Deluxe, after the legendary Barcelona concert last September. I think she must have had long hair up until shortly before then, there must be photos of her Sandy Denny period somewhere. Can anyone help? The Wee World of Worship is sadly incomplete without one. Still a good read though, and proof that it is still possible to come up with something a bit diferent about B&S. Speaking of which, our local paper have decided to mark the release of the new EP by reviewing the last album. Apparently it sounds like it was composed in the Glasgow countryside and the music smells of moss. The NME website contained some information about a week ago which was attributed to a Jeepster "spokeswoman". I wonder who it was? I'm already excited about the next album, I think it'll be crap. I hope so anyway. Just for a laugh. I hope Stuart gets a vocoder. I don't really think it'll be crap. But it might be. I might pretend it is anyway. Still haven't got TWATJAMMERS. Pumpkiny-Wumpkiny, Have I Told You Lately That I Love You? Do I get a prize for that? Speaking of prizes, I know who Vinicius de Moraes is, even though I probably don't know how to spell it. He's the Bard of Bossa Nova, the man who supplied the lyrics for many of Antonio Carlos Jobim's classic songs, including THAT one. He also appears to have collaborated with the founder of the Scout buggering movement, Baden Powell. There are also plenty of records by V de M as a performer, usually together with loads of other people, such as Quarteto Em Cy. I don't know if they're any good, it's the kind of thing I pick up and put back down again, because I'm scared to risk shelling out for it. Any information, from Ivo or others, would be gratefully received. I bought Tribute to Jackie Mittoo, the Jamaican keyboard wizard. I haven't listened to it yet, but there are some fantastic photos, lots of them taken in Toronto. Mister Mittoo seems to have favoured afros over dreadlocks. Splendid, splendid! I watched "Seven" because Richard Roundtree's in it, but he doesn't get to do much. I thought he was going to be the murderer as well, but it wasn't to be. I bet he passed on loads of bird-pulling tips to Brad Pitt. Thank you Gary for a nice picture of Santa adding another log to the fire, the mucky pup. WeeJay pointed out that Tag and Keith always have the same opinions. I would like to point out that I have the same opinions too, I just pretend to have different ones sometimes, to confuse the enemy. hello again! yep, never thought i'd be posting quite as much since my return to the list, but there you go... (for the political record: i'm an anglophile american, living in europe, and my name is not bill bryson. so...). i have a modest little website that looks alright, but i find it to be lacking somewhat in content. my ultimate goal is to come up with a sort of e-zine, covering all the basics: music, film, literature, travel, fiction, etc. although i have a journalistic background, i could always use one more thing: time. therefore, if anyone is interested in contributing anything at all - words, pics, what have you - to the page, we could get something up and running. i've been sitting on my duff for far too long, and now it's time to get those creative juices... erm... flowing again. so, like i said, anything: little reviews, paintings of clouds, even a good link or two, pics... anything. living here in holland, i become increasingly aware of the lack of sinister folk around, so this might be a great way to collaborate and get to know one another (god, i'm sounding awfully formal here!). by the way, so far the little page is at http://www.tobin.demon.nl (shameless plug, alex!)... and don't come barking up my tree if you see the odd lifted .jpg or .gif! hello all im back after my getting my puter fixed, i coukldnt send email from my parents puter but ive been reading stuff so i have lots of responses bottled up inside reading to go boom i wont rehash anything too old or dead, this'll be pretty long so if you dont wanna read anything i say sskip ahead to the music i bought because there might be something cool you wanna get as for tweepop and that whole business: i always tell people that B&s are charm pop, pop bands that rely on their endless charm and which shows in their music, plus it makes me think of lollypops i have no idea if that is a common term or not but it works for me a lot of indie pop falls into that category, it describes more the feel than the actual music, i would put Promise Ring and Cursive into that category and they certainly aint much like B&s except that they both kick booty what else... oh about Fuck, im confused that their new record is not being worshiped as it is by me Laundry Shop is a stunningly perfect pop song, very simple with amazing harmonies and a catchy as hell hook, just too damn short i have the first two Fuck discs and conduct but not Pardon My French because i keep meaning to getting around to ordering teh special hand made version from the band instead of the boring Matawhore packaging but i should prolly give in and get the regular release Fuck is very high on my best of list for 98, im not happy that i missed them in Boston a while ago but i had stuff to do and no time (grr on school says i) ok thats all the topics i wanted to respond to so heres stuff all my own: this is a list of the many albums I've acquired since last i posted, i think its complete and in rough chronological order i might have already mentioned the first few but i dont htink so (*=vinyl) --Martin Newell-Greatest Living Gentleman (whoohoo anybody have any early tapes Brotherhood Of Lizards, Cleaners From Venus or anything else? ill trade my first born) --David J-Urban Urbane (fun fun glad his solo is much more like Jazz Butcher than glove and sprockets --Dirty 3-Sad And Dangerous* (randomly found it its their out of print 1st album for those who didnt know and cared) --Songs:Ohia-Impala* (bootiful) bought at Other Music: --Orange Juice-Rip It Up (not as perfect as You Cant Hide Your Love but the second half is pretty cool) --Ciao Bella-{ST} (very fun charm pop, the first second song on the album called How Low has the spifffiest little guitar riff that make sme dance) --Secret Square-{ST} (havent really listened tyo it yet) --Felt-me and A Monkey On the Moon (finally i really know what the fus is all aabout glad to have one of the poppy albums finally) --Cursive-The Storms of Early Summer (not quite as amazing as the first album but like IYFS its almost impossible to satisfy mee with a follow up) --Lullaby For Thee Working Class-Hypnotist EP (i thought wounded spider was gorgeous on the album, the live version on this is beyond words) --Field Mice-Where'd You Learn To Kiss That Way (kind of uneven as most comps are but some amazing stuff on it for sure) --Gerbils-Are YoU sleepy?* (two of the best songs to come from Elephant 6 on here "you know portastatic is still my favorite band" im a sucka for indie refernces, another great line: "your nose smells just like a nose, your ears sound just like ears, your lips tastes sweeter than the sugar on my spoon, and id like to lick them again" (paraphrased so dont yell at me if i made a mistake) bought around here: --Tullycraft-City Of Subarus (Secret Stars combined with Fuck on hyperdrive ("they say that i ddont know you, but i say that i do, kneee high socks and diet softdrinks, im convinced that i love you") --Of montreal-The Bedside Drama a Petite Tragedy (bets damn kazoo solo this year, and best song about a bee, and best barbershop quartet singing, very soft and silly silly) --King radio-Mr. k Is Dead Go Home (the lead singer for this band always ordered Kid's Packs when i worked at the theatre, it show sin the music) --The Maggies-Homesick (fun pop rock stuff, random lyrics that arent sposed to mean anything but nice harmonies and they're really fun live (bounciest happiest bass player ive ever seen) --Silver Jews-American Water (havent listened yet) --Lily's-Better Can't Make Your Life Better (FINALLY the only Lily's album i can never find, finally did) --True Love Always-Hopefully (anyone heard these guys? they are so great, mellow jazzy indie pop, ida without the girl sining and they never scream (feel reminds me of first couple fuck releases, then again so do a lot of things) phew thats it, hope you stayed with cause a lot of people here would did these bands esp.
