With the shock departure of Northy from the list, I think we are all in need of spiritual succour. So in honour of the dearly departed I've decided to inaugurate the "Sinister Poem of the Week". Basically, drawing on from Tag's idea of the list as a daily fanzine, and also the fact that Sinisterines seem to be astonishingly well-read, I thought it'd be fun to have a regular feature every Monday. One of the frustrating things about my job is that I get to read lots of fantastic contemporary poetry, which I know lots of people would enjoy if only they had access to it. So in a spirit of "literary home-taping", I thought I'd choose some excellent new poems, in the same way that you might make someone a tape of a fantastic new group on a tiny label that no-one would've ever heard of otherwise. And of course this helps me feel slightly better about sending private email from work... Of course, it doesn't have much to do with B&S, and if enough people regard it as spam, I'll stop... But anyway... Paul Farley is from Liverpool. He's just won the Poetry Review New Poet of the Year award, and has a new book, "The Boy from the Chemist is Here to See You" out soon, published by Picador. For those of you who are either too young, or not British, Keith Chegwin is an ex-kids tv presenter who turned to the bottle. The poem deals with his early teenage appearance in a Roman Polanksi Shakespeare adaptation... He picked you for your hair to play this role: a look had reached Bootle from Altamont that year. You wouldn't say you sold your soul but learned your line inside a beating tent by candlelight, the shingle dark as coal behind each wave, and its slight restatement. "A tale told by an idiot..." "Not your turn, but perhaps, with time and practice...", the Pole starts. Who's to say, behind the accent and that grin, what designs you had on playing a greater part? The crew get ready while the stars go in. You speak the words you'd written on your heart just as the long-awaited sunrise fires the sky a bluish pink. Sinister: Good Morning List

Hello people, absolutely knackered at work this morning, had a bit of a rough weekend, how's everybody doing? Anyone bought any decent records recently, I need some tips for the moment as I've almost run out of things to buy.I've asked a few people that question recently and virtually all of them don't really have many ideas. It's a pain in the arse - have people stopped bringing good records out for the moment? What do we reckon then about this listy meet up thing, is May the decision, there's no reason why we shouldn't have more than one, let's face it, if it's good fun, we should have loads. London people, I'm a comin' down to London some time in the next month or so, so I'd like to meet you all (again for most of you). Katrina, sorry, never got a chance to listen to SnowPatrol at the weekend, as I said before I was horribly pissed all weekend, will have a listen some time soon. Actually, as odd as it may seem, it's not like that at all at least where I work. Noone dances to that sort of thing anymore, maybe in films and in the 50s but that time is gone. It's just techno and heavy metal mostly. But not for meActually for me it's got more to do w/performance than nudity. Anyone can take their clothes off, right? But it takes work to make a song that does't lend itself to that sort of environment work. See what I mean? If one can successfully dance to something noone else would think of to dance to and coincidentally something she loves, then she's got one up on those who stick w/general heavy rotation hits. In that one, they've never heard it before and it doesn't fit the bill of what they may expect, therefore it is going to attract attention (be it positve or negative) to the one dancing to it. Thereby resulting in being seen(which could result in tips) or at least by expressing individuality in a place where one is expected to be void of mind and personality. Also, if one has the advantage of having strong emotional attachment to a particular song and goes out on stage and acts out the way it makes her feel the performance can come out far better than it would if she were dancing to something that just has a good beat. Therefore, I would say that it is at least for a rare few a form of art and interpretation in a performance setting that does not have the status that theatre or modern dance has, but if you use it in that way, it can come out well. Sinister: BMX Bandits

Hi, Yeah, I also had the chance to talk to Stevie after the show in SF and he was so nice and became really embarrassed when I told him that I haven't liked a band as much as B&S since the Stone Roses. Then he said something to the effect that he gets upset when he talks about the Roses, because they were so important to him when he was younger, and look how everything turned out... Also playing with the BMX Bandits was Sushil the bassist, who used to be in the Soup Dragons! He was also really nice and talked to myself and my friend for an hour after the show. It was great. The Judybats? Now there's a name I haven't heard in years! That is a band that I never personally liked (but they had their fans) that was out of my hometown, Knoxville,TN. They filmed one of their videos on a friend of mine named Bill Harper's farm about 5 years ago. Very sweet poppy stuff, actually. One of the guys from that band is now a server at a bar I frequent. He's not been the same since their breakup. I always remembered them to be quite full of themselves and pretentious, although now it seems they've not much to be pretentious about any longer. So it goes in the music industry I suppose...a hit one minute, starving artists the next. I have been wondering if anyone could tell me why my chat software isn't working. I've read the directions, but it won't even let me sign on. It says valid name, but there is no data or something. Anyway it tells me to try to connect w/a different server. Sinister: Judybats; Eddie Vedder shocker. He is happy! I'm feeling better now...

The quote at the bottom of this e-mail reminded me of the Judybats 'Daylight'. It's an amusing tale of a girl who loses her boy and then disaster strikes, the verse goes: 'She slipped up on daylight crack in the sidewalk she up and dissappeared all the people gathered around said "Gosh, we really liked that girl"' The Judybast is another band I'd recommend, especially to the European contingent because the Judybats were popular on college radio in the states, but I don't think word got across the Atlantic. Before I forget, did anyone catch Eddie Vedder on MTV the other day? He declared that he's not pissed any longer!!! Record execs are now shaking and trembling. Calvin Klein just changed their marketing strategy and will no longer use unhappy/brooding/aloof looking models or concepts. Electronica was not the huge hit that was supposed to sweep America. Americans could not understand what the hell Keith Flint was shouting. What do we do now? What's the world coming to? Will the air waves now be filled with happy bubble gum pop? Sinister: London calling, yes I will be there too

I'll be in London from Thursday through Sunday/Monday (2/12 - 2/15). I will be staying in the Kensington area, I think the tube stops are Bayswater/Queensway or something like that. Is anyone getting together for a show during that time frame? I'd like to meet some people from the list. Don't be shy, I'm harmless and playful. You can ask the Washington DC Sinistereans...well then again they might not back me up on that one :-). If no one is getting together, can someone please give me a list (or web address) for good places to catch some bands, good indie record stores and theaters, cool clothing places, groovy book stores, etc. I would really appreciate it. Sinister: BMX Bandits in San Francisco

good afternoon, just a short introductory entry from a fellow b&s admirer. my name is brian and i live in san francisco. last night i was lucky enough to go and see the bmx bandits play at a very small bar here in town. lucky, not because i found the bmx bandits worthy of my adulation, but lucky because the lovely stevie jackson was in town performing with them. i don't suppose it would be a very good idea to concentrate on the bmx bandits performance, since i'm sure nothing i would have to say about it would make me any new friends. is that general enough? stevie, however, was definitely the star attraction at the show! both times his name was mentioned by the singer, the crowd responded lovingly; quadrupling the amount of applause any of the other band members received. so sorry. my friend jane and i hung out afterwards and talked to him briefly. he was so pleasant and polite and said he was a little bit embarrassed by all the attention. there were a few other people there with b&s merchandise to be signed and he was very chatty and happily obliged. most promising, is suppose, was the mention of some b&s live dates possibly in june. yay! so there you have it. i think it would be great to organize a picnic here in san francisco to coincide with the ones going off in other countries. any bay area folk into the idea? brian ----------------------------------------------------------------------- .
