i've got a couple things to say. first of all.....and this isn't a reply, this is something brand spanking new......i fucking hate the smashing pumpkins and everything they stand for. but..... today i purchased james iha's new solo album and it is truly a work of art. acoustic. drums. violins. none of that rat in a cage bullshit. so anyone who liked that song "blue" that was a b-side to some song the pumpkins did three years back, should go and buy james iha's solo album. gauranteed billy free. oh, it's called...well, i forget. it's the only one though. now. on to the replies which are sure to anger certain people. i'm gonna pull a "northy" and be the voice of opposition. the red house painters album "songs for a blue guitar" is wonderful and everyone should buy it. everything else, however, is one big pile of crap. whiny vocals. sparse music. not sparse and good like smog, but sparse and boring. oh and on the shinkansen web site they smog is the worst band in existence. don't believe what you read. anyway, to make myself clear...stay away from red house painters except the lovely and wonderful "songs for a blue guitar". please don't write me all you rhp fans. just a different opinion. and for whoever mentioned the "nico icon" documentary.....i saw it two night ago and it was crap. nico is crap. the songs would have done much better with ol' lou at the helms. pissing people off at an enormous and scary rate, brad ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . Now than my computer problems are fixed I can agree all the people who offered me the Tigermilk and others.. Dont any of you ever read crap literature? Like the books about Diana and Morgan Kane and Danielle Steele,, stuff like that. I once read a book after the 'other woman'( i dont even remember her name after reading the book) in the Supremes about why she didn't became Diana Ross and once I read a book about Pele - the black pearl..... I think I was bored ( or I hope so). Anyways the necesery B&S content. A friend of mine bought IYFS for 299 icelandic kronur on a CD sale market, it -translates into pounds 2.50, dollars hmmm something like $4 , svenske kroner 30.......... Sinister: Possibilities. . .

With the talk of Truffaut's _The 400 Blows_ on the list, it occurred to me that there is a certain scene in Truffaut's film _Jules and Jim_, aruably his best and arguably the best film ever made, that would fit the band. First, someone mentioned that this talk of French New Wave was "retro" and not appropriate in association with this "modern" band. Movements and ideas carry across time, to be "reborn". The French New Wave is perceived as a rebirth of aesthetics and filmmaking, a fresh approach to the staid movies that it was a reaction against. It shows an innocence to a dreadful world; young Antoine Doinel is living a rough life that never resorts to self-pity, only to possibility of where the next day will lead. It was something beginning, a piecing together of parts of history in a scrapbook, to be used, or discarded, at will. Belle and Sebastian can be considered the French New Wave's artistic heirs because the band is also reconstructing history into their own fashion, for their own purposes. Instead of using tradition as a stopping point, Belle and Sebastian take tradition and use it as a means--to avoid, to play with the notion of, to better. The songs are often about horrible subjects, yet with a bright unending-day quality; any fey innocence in the songs is merely masking the ills of living. _Breathless_: a movie with rough editing, mostly dialogue--those are not the ways movies were supposed to be made. (It may not be so shocking now, because those techniques have already been appropriated into the film canon). Belle and Sebastian: a band of eight members, released three singles after two albums, no interviews--those are not the ways bands proceed. Belle and Sebastian play the game by their own rules. It often seems that we do not even play by their rules; we are merely observing. I am not writing that this is a French New Wave band; I am writing that there are more similarities than seen with a casual glance. Time is a feeble boundary. This is about possibilities. In _Jules and Jim_, Jules, Jim, and Catherine go to the seashore on a whim. On a hillside Catherine offers that the three should "search for the last traces of civilsation". They wander--finding cans, wrappers, pieces of china--personal treasures: each and every one. In the moments of the day that I lose myself into myself, I imagine Belle and Sebastian on a similar hill, finding what has been left behind from the world, and what they will do with the pieces. Sinister: B & S dreams?

Don't know if this really counts, or not but... I saw this amazing young lady at a Pub in Vail, Sunday. I was dumbstruck, always one to trip over my tongue in these situations. She was so cute, and had the cutest little teddy bear patch on her brown baggies, I stared rudely. I finally talked to her for a few moments, and feel compelled to make her a tape of, you guessed it, B & S. Something about that little bear patch, I think, that connected her to the band. Dream: confused images, smoky bar, much older/dingier, lived in, unlike the pub in Vail. B & S playing on the jukebox ( A first for Colorado!). I kinda think that the place wasn't here, not in the States, but I'm unsure where. Maybe Germany, or Austria. About there I lose the memory, not much of a dream, it just goes to images, not overtly sexual, I suppose, but I woke to the screaching alarm this AM with that dreamy crush feeling that I love. I floated through my day today. I love anonymous romance. It's so innocent. I'll keep you posted as to the response to my present of a tape. I felt compelled to make it, just finished the Sinister side, and plan to try to deliver it this weekend. hello all! my mum and da are going to scotland on wednesday for my aunts big 25th wedding anniversary party. as usual i am allowed to give my mum a wish list of stuff i would like...so the question is: has anyone got any suggestions of any cds or singles recently released? all i can think of right now is the catatonia cd, the new st etienne single and the new dubstar one(although i have heard that its not that grand)...also i was thinking of asking her to get me the b&s singles on 7", are they relatively easy to come by? maybe at missing records? they'll be staying in hargate and my mum will undoubtedly go into glasgow for the shops...they leave to come back on the 24th so even if its something that has an upcoming release date would be ok.. any suggestions are appreciated.. roberta **oh you look so tired mouth slack and wide ill-housed and ill-advised your face is as mean as your life has been crash into my arms i want you****** ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . hi hi hi! Doh, I have just had a really daft experience. A man has just knocked on the door, and said 'FISH MAN FISH WITH A DIFFERENCE!" I just said 'noooooo' and he said 'OK' and wandered off, strange man! I've suddenyl decided I am pissed off cos everyone in my house has been ylling at me, Korny is being a tosser and annyoing everyone again. You know how he is is 'oh i sashed my wrists again i was a bit depressed' and he shows EVERYONE in the fucking pub for crying our loud as if it is a pub conversation. that really pisses me off. you know, i never thougt suicide and self mutilation are subjects to be shown off! i mean, you don't walk about with scars on show to say 'ooh look at me i am so fucked', i mean, i hide it and not even fucking YOU were meant to know! And I've been singing a mix between Rick Astley and Dead Yanke Drawll all day! Racheal H was sining Rick, not ME! And frankie was making up is his own ickle tunes in his head, aaw he's a sweetie! Which reminds me he's STILL got to lend me Mornington Crescent. I llove Girl a....but don't know the est of it, except 'you don't sparkle in my eyes', which he says its the same as t'original. So how are you? And more to the point how is Clarey? You lookes tres happy last time i saw you......speaking of which...Ben and Rachel.... :) yup, fiinally he asked hr out but nothing has happened since then as far as i know. Tis all Arlets fault. I feel so inefeeectual you know, as if theres a lot WE can do. fuck, get this. they're trying to stop out bus passes. aint that ace. It costs me 3.40 a day to get into Preston, as if i can afoord that every day. I dunno if its appening next year, we haven't got a letter yet but Katie has. And its bad nough for me, its 3.85 from Lytham, people who live really way out just aren't gonna get the chance to get to college cos they phsically can't! And the council should know that cos the Fylde is pretty spread out anyway!!! I think its fucking disgraceful. well, thats me ant over for now, see you! are you coming down on thursday? Jude gave me a ticket to go see Watershed at Penwortham wedensday to review them, but i can't really afford to get to Penwortham.
