Hoorah! fo jon g. for being a hero and typing up the words to the indescribably lovely Wrong Love.... But having listened to the thing non-stop for three days, I was surprised to find I'd got a different interpretation: I thought it was '... the wrong eyes to go searching behind', rather than blind. A small point, but still... ...In fact listening to it again on me walkman, I still think it is. Anyone else care to hazard a guess? Sinister: Live shows

Jon G., there is absolutely nothing wrong with gaps between songs in live shows. Far better than the alternative, anyway. Everything merging seamlessly into one in a shambolic fashion, confusing the uninitiated and denying an appreciative audience the opportunity to punctuate the set with rounds of applause, loud whoops etc. I have read reviews describing gigs where the singer tells long stories between songs and they are usually derogative about that. I think I'd be pretty miffed by this - unless they were incredibly witty of course. Sorry, did I miss something? There was a power cut here, the room was plunged into darkness and the computers fell silent (I work in a big open plan offic). Everyone was commenting about how quiet it was. But maybe we need the constant hum of IT equipment to keep us all awake. Chris Leonard, I love your play! Wish I had an imagination like that. Wow! I have no idea how many copies IYFS has sold but HMV in Oxford had marked it under BEST SELLERS. Does anyone know how it is decided which new releases are displayed in the windows of record stores? Is it done at a branch or national level in the case of the larger chain stores? After all, there must be hundreds of new releases each week and is it purely a matter of corporate clout? you may say 'it's not important' but I would beg to differ- whether or not a new band gets its single/album in the window of a high street store must make a substantial differnce to how well their work sells. and why do lyrics of songs on albums differ so much from those in the sleevenotes/inlay card/ um, er bookletnotes (?) . I daresay this has got something to do with issues of copyright etc that I don't pretend to understand (re Radiohead's 'lyrics by permission even though we wrote them' on 'OK Computer') . IYFS has examples of this e.g. in Get Me Away from Here I'm Dying 'washing against the lonely tenement' is printed 'falling' is sung. I do appreciate that it can be the band being deliberately perverse in some cases eg 'Baby I am no futurist etc' for Pavement's 'Type Slowly' on Brighten the Corners. And I'm sure we can all think of examples of fragments of lyrics appearing rather than the whole song (eg every song on Belly's 'Star' album). I'm hope I'm not offending any Scousers with that subject title. I enjoyed Katrina's impassioned plea. Deep breaths are required all round, and then we can start again. How about listening to some - hey! - B and S to calm down? Now that's an idea. Why is everybody so irritable right now? It could be the weather. I blame Al Nino. There are just two problems we need to solve. a. No one should abuse anyone else. b. If you are abused, made fun of, ignored for a while, don't get so upset. It's life. It happens. I'm sure Mary Jo, Judy, Lisa, Jane, Jo, and even lovely Belle get pissed off sometimes. We just have to learn to deal with it. Sinister: The City Imp

This is indeed a dark time for the pop rebellion. In a vain effort to unite the list in love, I have taken it upon myself to write a short play. Unlike the new Star Wars Trilogy, my play is the uplifting tale of a boys return to grace! How happy is that! All the characters here are fictional from my brain. If they remind you of anyone, or if the names sound familiar then that is purely coincidental. You see, I made it up. I love everyone in the world apart from bad people, wankers and the evil Jesus clone. THE CITY IMP =========== SCENE 1 <Struan Davids house - A one room log cabin hidden in a large> <bush in Glasgow's Kevingrove Park. Struan logs off his pedal> <powered pentium and punches a chib off the wall into the fireplace> Struan D: THIS IS PISH! PISH I SAY! PISH! PISH! PISH! I HATE EVERYONE IN THE WHOLE WORLD! <Struan's long suffering wife, Wee Eckie comes in. She is wearing> <a traditional style Scots bunnet and a ladies kilt> Wee Eckie: Och what's all this noise about now Struan? Everyone can hear you in the park outside. Your putting all the boys off their shagging. Struan D: I WAS ON THE COMPUTER AND I DIDN'T LIKE IT! I'M LEAVING! Wee Eckie: God, you're not going to the pub again are you Struan? You're drinking far too much. You know I don't like it when you're drunk, why don't you stay in with me, and we can watch the boys in the park. Struan D: LEAVE ME ALONE YOU WENCH! I NEVER LIKED YOU! Wee Eckie: Struan, come on just....just let go! It was years ago now for Gods sake! Just because he died doesn't mean you have to stop living! What happened to the boy I fell in love with? Struan D: PISH! PISH I SAY! PISH!!!!!!!! <Struan Storms out of the house and slams the door. Wee Eckie starts to weep> SCENE 2: <The Halt Bar, Woodlands Road, Glasgow, some hours later. Struan sits> <alone in the corner, with a big glass of whisky and several empties in front> <of him. On the small mock stage a local boy in a suit plays some blues > <slide guitar. Struan sips his whisky and starts to talk to himself like a> <drunken arse.> <Struan D> What happened to me? Why am I so grumpy all the time? I know deep down that there is good in me. I can feel it - but, God, I really miss Taggart. He was the best detective Glasgow has ever known. And a hardy bastard to boot. Even though he had a face like a bulldog licking pish off a thistle, he had character. And that's what counts these days. And to think - he died of a broken heart. WHY? WHY? PISH I SAY! SCENE 3: <A drunken Struan D staggers along a woody woodland path on his way back> <home. He trips and falls.> <Struan D> PISH I SAY! <Too weary and drunken to stand up, he rolls on his back and stares up through the > <trees at the stars. He closes his eyes and starts drift off to sleep, only to be brought> <round by a strange beautiful music. He opens his eyes and sits up. Standing on a > <toadstool directly in front of him is a little man, about 3 inches high. He has a little guitar, about> <one inch long. He is wearing a felt T-shirt, and a badge which reads "Little Struan M". > <Struan D listens to the words the little man is singing> <Little Struan M> (sings) # When I was a taller man, # # I manly manned a ship. # # A vessel with a womans touch, # # I called her "Pale Margaret" # # Maggie sailed around the world # # By every coastal shore # # But now I am a little man # # I'll sail in her no more, no more # # I'll sail in her no more. # <Struan D> Who are you, little man? <Little Struan M> I am the imp of the city. The City Imp. I have magical powers. <Struan D> What sort of magical powers? <Little Struan M> I have the magical power of song. What would you to hear a song about? <Struan D> Sing me a song about why Taggart had to die. <Little Struan M> Hmm. OK. (sings) # Taggart had to die # # Cause he had a broken heart # # His lady went before her time # # But now they are together # # And never will they part # # Praise the Lord oh Praise the Lord for he is fine, he is fine # # Praise the Lord Oh Praise the Lord for he is fine # <Struan D> I really want to say that was pish, but I can't bring myself too! Hey! I've lost all my inside hate! You've cured me little man! Thank you! Thank you! I have to get home to Wee Eckie! SCENE 5: <Struan D's house. Struan burst's through the door> <Struan D> Wee Eckie! I LOVE YOU! I'm sorry I've been such a prick for the last few years Will you marry me again? I love everyone in the world apart from bad people, wankers and the evil Jesus clone. <Wee Eckie> Oh Struan! I LOVE YOU! Yes I will marry you again! SCENE 6: <Struan D And Wee Eckie walk holding hands into the sunset. Aaah.> THE END Aaaah indeed. I don't think I've been nasty to anyone on the list, but If I have I'm sorry. Sinister: college, gigs, and Willie Rushton

Adam Robinson wrote about seeing "Guys and Dolls" at the National Theatre and I'd like to second that emotion. I went with my mum and dad; and dad, who is 79 said it was the greatest thing he'd ever seen. There was so much joy and ecstasy in being alive in that show that it couldn't but move you. I know mankind is capable of many horrors and all that stuff but it's times like that remind you what we can also be; our capacity for beauty and laughter and just how great life can be. Shows like that also turn me green with envy because I want to be a part of it. Although I love music and seeing bands I've never really wanted to be in a band. But I have always fancied being an actor/comedian/all-round-entertainer (My friend always advised me to try and promote myself as "the new Willie Rushton" as there was clearly a dearth of New Willie Rushtons on the comedy circuit - now of course Willie is dead and there's no one there to fill his place - oooh I'm kicking myself!). I've been to concerts that I've really enjoyed and were memorable perhaps because they were an event or there was a big name. But I suppose what unites the really great gigs and shows I've seen is the fact that the band/performers weren't trying to be cool they are just trying to be fun or be themselves. And by so doing in my eyes they become wildly cool. Shakespeare said "There's nothing so becomes a man as modest stillness and humility." and I've always subscribed to that point of view. That's one of the things I love about B&S and it's what made perhaps the greatest gig I've ever seen so special. This was the Bhundu Boys at the Potterow in Edinburgh 1989. I'd never seen them before or really heard their music but I knew the name. From the very first strum of the guitar the entire room was dancing, bouncing up and down all night as the sweat started to rain down off the ceiling. The band themselves were so charming - so bloody polite in their thanks for our appreciation it was incredible. Their keyboard player had gone back to Zimbabwe the day before as his wife had died and they dedicated the performace to him with genuine condolence.
