hullo! oo dear. but yay! there are people *younger* than me on the list! So, you people who insist on calling me a Young Pup, I'm not the youngest anymore! ner! ok, well not physically anyway, i think mentally i am about 3/98 depeding on mood swings. Someone wrote concerning the suddenly mulit-posting-but-jolly-good-chap cos he put the B&S session that i missed on line, except i can't get it cos my browsers knackered and i have no idea how the college will react to a pooter blaring out B&S tunes.... oh, yeah, someone wrote them about "do they really KNOW hoe special B&S are?"...well, please mate. i mean i know i'm a whole year (WOO!) older than jon and bethey, but the ages don't make any difference to how you feel about a band - you just might get patronised a tad more...hmm... *i* know B&S are special. i know this because the way they make me feel is special. i've got involved with a load of stuff that is "special". i've suddenly got stuck for words and don't know what i mean. i don't consider B&S the next step on from Boyzone if you mean that. i've not exactly quite said what i wanted to say, i can't sum up. Towards the end, I taught groups of first-year students English Lit, and none of them gave a monkey's about reading the books or thinking. < Thing is, the reason I did take Eng. Lit. was because I always loved the idea of taking a subject that involved reading and thinking about books for 3 or 4 years...maybe I'm just sad, but that kinda thing has always appealed to me- that's why I'm not taking art, cause I don't think i'd learn all that much except how to paint better/differently. Of course, I've always preferred reading the books to actually writing about them, but that's not really the point, is it? Anyway, favourite gigs...um, B&S are/were one of my faves, I'm sure (oh, it seems like so long ago now). Music seems to be the only thing that really makes me happy just now, there's a certain uplifting quality in melancholy that gets me every time. I dunno, for every good point at a gig there usually seems to be a bad one that brings it down (like idiot crowdsurfers landing on my head & nearly breaking my neck. Not fun.) So, yeah, Belle and Sebastian. Because it was so beautiful, and I fell in love with them all over again- just as I did when I received a copy of Tigermilk in the post from the lovely david on Friday...mmm, bliss. Todays favourite B&S songs; 'She's Losing It', and 'I Don't Love Anyone'. Yum. Oh, and would someone be able to tell me the set list from the Embra show last year? Would be ever so grateful. Hi everyone Traffic chaos round Covent Garden right now, as there's some kind of student march going on. They've got huge drums and everything, like a south american football crowd. They seem to be protesting about tuition fees. I think there should be a minimum age of 25 for university entrance. That way you might actually know if you really want to go or not. If most people got jobs (or whatever) between the ages of 18 and 25, I bet they'd be a lot more sorted at the end of it. Oh dear, I have a feeling this isn't going to be a terribly popular point of view. Everyone I knew at university (in Newcastle) had no real desire to study - we were just wasting precious time. Fun, yeah, but a waste of time. Towards the end, I taught groups of first-year students English Lit, and none of them gave a monkey's about reading the books or thinking. We used to end up talking about Neighbours. Perhaps this is a reflection of my appalling teaching skills. Anyway, moving on to the point. This is a very dull question, but there's some interesting shit around it. What is the best concert/gig/commercial rock-oriented event you've ever been to? The thing is, I really like plays and drama, but I have never ever seen a piece of theatre that has made me feel amazing. Whereas I've seen loads of mediocre bands who have, somehow, made me scream, cry, jump up and down like a supergrass video, and so on. It's always odd bands like the Paris Angels that stand out in my memory. And the Waterboys at Oxford Apollo in 1989: absolutely bloody incredible. They were really on to something for a while there. I saw the smiths three times, and I long to say that they knocked my little black socks off, but they didn't. I was too excited to enjoy them. That sucks, doesn't it? I think the best concerts always involve some form of euphoria. Paris Angels did (drug-related, maybe) and the Waterboys in a (god I hate this word) spiritual way. Which leads me to B and S. I must have seen five or six hundred bands over the last fifteen years, but nothing remotely comparable to our hero/ines. How can this be explained? Are there any other people on the list around the age of 30 who feel the same? Jon.g and bethey are only fifteen: do you understand quite how unique this band are? Even though they shamble around on stage like a bunch of fools, the end result astonishes me every time. I'm going to have a lie down. You need an afternoon nap at my age. Sinister: college, gigs, and the theatrical experience

Just adding my two penn'orth to the debate generated by David-who-is-Ruth-McCurry's interesting post. I too utterly wasted my time at university and really regret it now. Doing an English degree, I had the opportunity to spend three years reading, thinking and expanding my mind and instead I spent it going to lots of really terrible nightclubs and being unable to get up in the morning. With hindsight I think the best way to enjoy college (should you be lucky enough to have the opportunity to go) is to balance your social life with at least a modicum of academic pursuit. God ! i sound like my Dad ! I think the first gig you ever go to is always going to be special, just because the whole experience is so exciting, it doesn't really matter who it is, unless, like someone I know, you've only ever been to one gig and that was the Flying Pickets. Some of my gig highlights have been Prince on the "lovesexy" tour - tears in my eyes during "The Cross". Happy Mondays at Leeds Warehouse - loads of mates there, the feeling that you're there at the beginning of something important. The Blue Nile - just being in a room full of people that are beside themselves with joy to see these people actually on a stage. David said he'd never seen anything in the theatre that replicated that feeling. At the risk of sounding like a mincing thesp, I'm lucky enough to have seen things that, for me, have. I grinned for days after seeing "Guys and Dolls" at the National last year and only last week Patrick Marber's "Dealers Choice" left a deep impression. I hope all that didn't sound pompous. It was just another chance to avoid working life. Of course there are many acceptions but I do think that there is an awful lot of people who just wasting away tax payers money and part of me agrees what Labour are doing. However, I have come out of college in so much debt that it seems I'm never going to be free of it, it's like every penny I ever earn is never going to be mine. So maybe I don't completly agree with you after all. Now I'm realy confused.

Therefore, nothing will compare to them, if what you say is true. I do sort of understand how wonderful B&S now, I think. Nothing comes close to the (god I hate this word too) spiritual feeling that Belle & Sebastian put inside me (apart from Arab Strap, but that's I different feeling - B&S are about love and Arab Strap are about hate). I see people at school listening to things like Robbie Williams' Angels and saying it's a really spiritual song and they can cry at it and I know that they are too naive to understand that there is so much better out there, than some fat melodramatic warbler who needs a bit of cash. Anyway, if I don't realise how good they are, I will do when they're gone.
