OK!!! time to apologize to the people at Columbia House, that evil CD mail- order company... You know the ones who advertise "12 CDs for $1!!!" and only after you send in your intial order do you realize you've sold your soul to the devil... Despite the fact that I owe them about $78 for some New Order Cds sent about 2 years ago, they continue to mail me catalogues and oh! how lucky, cos this month they feature Belle and Sebastian. Listen to this (somewhat corny and slightly erroneous) review: "If you buy only one album this month, *this* is the one to get! BELLE & SEBASTIAN 4 1/2 stars - the All-Music Guide Slouching out of Glasgow, Scotland, this seven-member group features neither a Belle nor a Sebastian but does have the best kept secret in songwriting: Stuart Murdoch. His effortlessly melodic miniatures recall the classic beauty of Nick Drake or Simon & Garfunkel while his lyrics dissect the intricate social ups and downs of lovelorn young people with crazy dreams and small-town frustrations. And all of it might have remained a real secret if his friends hadn't formed a band on a lark in 1995 and recorded the very out-of-print "Tigermilk" - now fetching upwards of $200 for original copies - for a school business project. After "Tigermilk," the band turned to local independent label Jeepster to release "If You're Feeling Sinister," an album so irresistible that the word of mouth has made it one of the top 30 sellers in a hip downtown New York record store for the *whole year* since its first release. Hello list I've been away for a while - whoring around other lists, etc. - and I must say, revisiting sinister is a pleasure. Class war, lust, French cinema - it's all so much more.vital than some I could mention. And so well run. You can keep your Sandi Toksvigs and Tommy Boyds, because yesterday at lunch I sat opposite Dustin Hoffman. Unbelievable but true. He gave me one of those strange L.A. style "how's it going?" type combination nod and smile things. Unsurprisingly, I wasn't sure quite what to say to him. But I did ask Terence Stamp for his autograph in a tea-shop recently. He signed my napkin "all the best, Terence" and seemed a little high. Mr. Begbie mentioned: Where are you now Stefan Dennis? Gayle & Gillian? Craig McLachlan and Check-1-2? and that was all it took to provoke me to share an odd sight from the Summer before last. Westminster Housing Benefit Office - a young man with an exceptional mullet - that is to say, hair which is short on top, long at back (a.k.a. "the best of both worlds" or "safety cut") and a home - decorated leather jacket that was a sartorial tribute to Craig McLachlan and Check 1-2, covered with artful graffiti concerning the band, and their logo. Kind of a walking shrine, in mixed media - tipp-ex and red aerosol, I recall. Bear in mind this was 1996, many years after what passed for Craig McLachlan's prime. Just in case I missed it while I was fannying about (is fannying an internationally comprehensible word?) - are they playing in America any time soon? B& S, that is, not Craig McLachlan and Check 1-2. I'm going through a bit of a Who phase, and in the sleeve notes to Live in Leeds there are lots of references to Pete's oppotunities to "stretch out" during the guitar solos. So perhaps that's what we should be looking for, the opportunity to "stretch out". By the by, Tim, the tape I've done you is chock a block full of people "stretching out", so if you don't like it you'll have to pass it on to a discerning rock chick. In Preston. OK? oh, i'm so excited. my friend just rang me up. screaming. apparently Steve Lamacq just anounced our fanzine on national radio. Waahaaay. but he couldn't read my handwriting for the address. ahh well. i'm happy. very happy actually. and i love Steve Lamacq. so, for anyone on the list who does want it, the address is below (i know some of you e-mailed me a while ago, i'm sorry i didn't reply earlier, but we've only just finished it.) Special hugs to Paul today :-) Before getting down to some serious business, may I just register the immensity of my joy at the very thought of giving Mike Peters of The Alarm and his wife a golf lesson. Has his wife got the same haircut? Magick! Katrina, could you post the birthdays of the band members again please? I've just had a look in the archives, but I couldn't find it. I have an inkling that it's Struan B. Midriff's birthday soon, and I want to send a handmade card with some poems in it. Speaking of which, The Knack And How to Get It features a track called "Mr Tight Trousers". Funny, eh? Today is like Christmas, I've got THREE new LPs to listen to: Brian Wilson, The Who and Tommy Hunt. I don't know what to make of the Brian Wilson one, I think I'll probably like it more when I've grown up. Except for the new Let Him Run Wild, which made me stop dead in my tracks and look at the stereo. That tiny little baby really must go to the concert, Ruth. But bear in mind what happened when that stray kitten wondered into the vocal booth. Shall we have bets on how long it's going to take for the concerts to sell out? I reckon Monday afternoon.
