Does anyone know if Dirty Dream #2 on the new album is fundamentally the same song as the one just called Dirty Dream that they played at the Saturday matinee concert in Manchester? I ask not to show off about remembering this, but because it was the highlight of all the new songs I heard. Can't rememember anything about it. Just that it was ace. Funny you should mention this, because I've been having a one man debate about Prince as well, brought on by reading an article in Record Collector about his outtakes. I haven't reached a conclusion yet, hampered no doubt by not having anything to listen to. There are certainly lots of really good Prince songs, too many to remember really...If I Was Your Girlfriend, the aforementioned Alphabet Street, Sexy MF, Raspberry Beret...lots more, but my brain's seized up. I used to think that the second single form each of his albums was really good, but I can't remember why. Also, at the time I had no idea where His Royal Purpleness was coming from, but now I can see the influences a bit more. That film, Under the Cherry Moon, is really good, really sexy. Boys and Girls, that's a good song. Taking all things into consideration, I think Prince is better than Julian Cope, but I'm not entirely sure. I think I need "Hits". Is anybody still there? Adrian; I wasn't really suggesting that your bird is a horse, more that you are going out with a horse, or living with one or whatever. You know, a real horse, not a bird who looks like a horse. It's a great joke, you just have to think about it for a couple of days, to the exclusion of everything else. Eventually it all becomes apparent. Trust me. I would like to know more about Tomas Luis de Vitoria's "Missa Defunctorum" - like where I can get it, you know, that kind of thing. I like Gregorian Chants when there's birds as well as blokes, although I don't know if that's strictly allowed. Speaking of birds, Picasso's Garden of EARTHY (not earthLy) delights is a little known engraving he did on the beach, not long after that famous photo was taken, you know, the one where he's holding a brolly over his bird, to keep the sun off her in case she gets sunburnt. Well, I hope you all have a really good weekend. I'll be trying out my new arab strap, which I made from a Coke can ringpull and a couple of those thick elastic bands that postmen usually have. 1. Bis - Dreadful shouty nonsense - like early Fuzzbox meets Blur bsides - this i might add, is not a good thing. Should be hung for their butchering of "The Boy With The Thorn In His Side" 2. Uresei Yatsura - Middle class Glaswegian tossers doing a very poor attempt at Pavement. Big tall guy annoys me as soon as i look at him. And anyone who calls a song Slain by Elf can forget it. I lasted 3 songs watching them at Sheffield last yeat. 3. Arab Strap - Rambling sub alcoholic mumbles over a tune that forgets its supposed to be listenable somewhere along the line. Hugely overrated. 4. Idlewild - I saw these muppets supporting the mighty Gold Blade at King Tuts. Daft wee boys trying to frighten their mum and dad by shouting and jumping around a lot. 5. The Pastels - Steven Pastel is a lovely guy but purlleaseee, im no muso, but a little terchnical ability wouldnt go amiss - after all theyve been at it for long enough. 6. BMX Bandits - The kind of twee wank that students like for 6 months in first year at uni to show how dreadfully alternative they are. In reality, they are about as alternative as Hanson. 7. The Secret Goldfish - Being fey and winsome is a good thing and i heartliy encourage it - these goons abuse the privelege. So sugary that after listening to them for 10 minutes all your teeth fall out and you become 20 stones ( well thats my excuse anyway) 8. The Delgados - See Uresei 9. Mogwai - Like an even more irritating Sonic Youth - capable of being splendid when they actually remember to write a song, but in general its 20 minutes doodling. 10. I think your man is a bit of a scumbag, and yet I'm often intrigued for some reason. Morrissey v Marr - I think that they've both lost it in recent times. Southpaw Grammar was a completely godawful album, and I kind of gave up on him, while the second Electronic album was pretty poor stuff at times too. I agree that Marr probably doesn't get his share of the credit for the Smiths stuff too, it's not just the wry and intelligent lyrics that I listen to them for at any rate. I've often thought the same as Keith about Prince - he does stick out the odd fine tune, but there must be 5 or 6 duffers for every good one. Does this make him a genius? Not sure. Not really - I just wanted to make young Nick (who I have met only once, but it seems like I've known him a lifetime) feel a bit more persecuted. Was Kristen joking about all the votes for Morrissey? Hope so - Johnny Marr was always the better looking, as well as the most talented. Still, Suedehead, Last of the Famous, Interesting Drug - not bad going for a has-been... I had loads to say, but after a bottle or two of Amarone at lunchtime, it's all left me. I have a bit of a problem with Ian's hate list, I must admit - I don't see why they deserve to be lumped together, for a start - is he slagging them to see what people's reactions will be? It seems to me a bit of a miracle that he likes Belle and Sebastian if he is so antipathetic towards a good half of those he slates - and anyway, how come he's so au fait with the Cha Cha Cohen back catalogue ("10. Virtually anyone else on the Chemikal Underground label")? I also have a bit of a soft spot for Bis - and have you seen Manda since the weight went and the tan arrived? Helloo... And can I just say fuck off to anyone who genuinely uses the term "middle class" as an insult. We're stuck with it, bucko. I've just read a story with the words "my egg-laying days are over" in it - maybe I have stumbled on the mysterious lost verse...
