Hello! I've just been trawling through the archives (am I the last to do so?) and I had to tear myself away. I suddenly realised how many messages there must be out there, and I got rather scared, and rather giddy. And some of the threads...something about Sid James that Peter Miller pronounced rather strange; hissy turntables, and some other stuff I can't think of. You could feasibly spend forever there, reading as fast as you can, but all the while, a fresh pile of steaming posts dollops into your mail box, and you get no where. It's like when someone told me that you could only read 2000 books in your life, and I thought 'no', but when you add it up, there just isn't enough time Aggh! AAGGGHH! But what I wanted to ask was: Can anyone recomend (and I know you love to) songs that sound like electronic renaissance? Even vaguely? I've thought of The Pet Shop Boys, (things like Where the streets have no name or whtever it's really called, and New Order, and even Pulp (at the time of His n' Hers,) and I really want that sort of ghostly, synthy p!o!p! sound running through my head.So, if anyone has any ideas? my school librarian liked them, but perhaps that is because she is from minnestoa and likes such things. matt (i've no idea why i bothered replying to this) << Tommy Stinson played bass (I believe) for the Replacements, and last I heard, had his own band called Perfect, and all I've ever heard by them was a cover of Crocodile Rock (really fun listening). His previous band, Bash & Pop, put out a great album called Friday Night Is Killing Me, and it had that one single you might remember called Loose Ends??? (Time to tie your loose ends up (tie 'em up).....)???? Good alcohol rock. This, by the way, ties in with another vein of this mailing list: '80's music. your ABC wasn't actually called ABC, they were Another Bad Creation, who did Aisha and Coolin It At the Playground (ahh, how I hated 5th grade)... the ABC you (no not you the other you) meant was the fairly amusing one who did The Look of Love and Poison Arrow, which I actually don't remember ever hearing until about 1994 on one of VH1's history of rock n roll thingummies (who broke my heart? you did, you did) matt (with a sunburn) << > I hope we're not talking about the same ABC.....because the only ABC > is > remember > is the kiddie-R&B hip-hop group which bombed successfully. =) yipe. No no no... ultra stylish 80's popsters. Released the aforementioned pop classic Lexicon of Love. Spent the rest of their careers frantically re-inventing themselves in an effort to recapture their initial flush of success. Lowest point: on How to be a Zillionaire they brought in some wacky freeloaders to enliven their image. A bald man and a saucy lady called Eden. They had a song on the lp where they all introduce themselves, with the immortal lines: 'hi, my name is eden, and i want you to kiss my snatch...' Sinister: signs of looper things to come....

He encouraged me to send it the list, fair warning to anyone who might be expecting things like melody and hooks, or the some of the best lyrics of this decade. But now I see the titles of the upcoming album, and my fears grow stronger...maybe they were future Belle & Sebastian songs..... 7. Spaceboy Dream 8. Dirty Dream #2 very similar to the songs on the Looper 45. Democracy, I guess. I just hate to have to use the skip button on my cd player. Something I was hoping never to do with Belle & Sebastian. They were my last hope for a perfect band. Electronic elements had been featured in songs past, but they were few and far between, and had a certain warmth to them, and something that Looper is sadly lacking. Its just left me cold, sorry. I know what some of you are thinking....I'm just some loser who hangs in my room worshiping old Byrds records, reading MOJO, and wishing I lived in the sixties, etc., etc. And your right, well not really. I wouldn't want to live in the 60's. I probably would have gone crazy like my dad. But if you had been out with me last night, you would have found me in some bar in the East Village, watching some fellow spin drumnbass, and enjoying it. I guess, its that lowfi electronics are all over American indie music these days. And most of it sucks. No passion what so ever. I'd hate to have these evil American influences sully my favorite band. No ambition. Hardly trying. Watching Belle & Sebastian last September in NYC, I was in constant shivers. Everything they did was perfect. (It happened to be a good night for them. Not shambolic at all.) It actually reminded me of a classical recital. I just don't see how lowfi electronic beats and loops can do to make the songs more interesting or powerful or soulful. But who knows, maybe they'll surprise me, they have always come through in the past. I'll shut up now, sorry to bore you with my opinions. rather cranky today. lack of sleep. too much drumnbass. love Carrick ps Why, when flying home from London on Virgin Atlantic last March, I heard Modern Rock Song on there little radio show?
