Tim... I guess I didn't put that too well as usual, but I'm not suggesting no-one supports local businesses, far from it, they certainly need it (although frankly in 1998 I suspect Woolies needs support just as much) nor that Woolies should get away with forcing a discount, purely with the rather black and white notion that Indie = Good, and Major = Bad. It's a daft generalisation. From what David said it appears that Woolies weren't going to stock it purely on the grounds that they wouldn't get a giant discount, and if that's the terms Jeepster want to deal with then them's the brakes as far as Woolies is concerned. It's just true that in many a place, these are the only stores available. My main problem with this sort of thing is that people do the same as they tend to do with politics and turn every situation into an us versus them situation, casting one side as holier-than-thou and another side as the evil empire - like Darth Vader or Fenella the Witch or something. It doesn't really help. It seems to me pointless arguing the pros and cons, and no I don't accept that everyone who works for a major record company is evil. Not one bit. I don't believe in people actually being evil at all come to that, perhaps misguided is a better word. [Tim I actually thought I'd said most of these things in my mail, and that you'd evilly misquoted me just like the MAN does, but I read it again and it turns out I hadn't. I'd been daydreaming whilst writing it. Never mind... better luck next time :-) by the way, I've got a cracking photo of you pissed up in Glasgow. Linda, being officially the *sensible* one, has suggested that some cold hard facts may be useful to anyone thinking of attending our little Bar-b-q, rather than me just posting irrelevant nonsense about Winona Ryder and avacados. So here goes. In case anyone gets lost/ needs to know exactly where they can get good humous in a hurry/ has second thoughts about coming and wants to be begged with, pleaded at and cajoled; our telephone number is: 0171 374 9259. We're usually back from work at around 7pm and will happily natter away for hours about how to get here etc..... Please feel free to bring games, tapes, guitars, kites, golf clubs, inflatable swimming pools, tramps bicycles etc. Although our back yard is but small the aim is to re-create the full sinister picnic experience. I'm sure with a little imagination and a lot of pluck we can transform it into a garden of earthly delights. Oh yes. Please ring the top bell when you turn up! SF Weekly has a feature TUBBYWARS/TWATTYBUS feature this week, it's so marvelous and seemingly factually correct that I'm wondering if it's not written by one of our own?? The Sinister list gets a couple of mentions - "*is* Elvis a cat?" - and an interview with Stevie is incorpated into the butt-smoochingly good review. He mentions his own apprehension for using non-Murdoch material on the album (apparently 4 of the songs are not Stuart M's) and how Virgin Atlantic basically stole "Modern Rock Song" to use in their in-flight entertainment ... Sinister: My shepherds bush review

Firstly I have never been so drunk at a concert before - but this is what I remember "Union Chapel last year - I missed it - couldn;t get in, tried every contact in the book - I cursed B&S every since for playing at a venue where only record co. lovies can get in. BUT I got my tickets for the empire and my numbers were 0003,0004,0005,0006 which I thought was pretty cool but who got the first two ? I met up with four B&S convertees outside - I arrived by cab and a tout opened the door for me and asked if I had any tickets to sell ! - for christs sake haven't even got out of cab yet - Got in and got my Sinister Tshirt for £15 !!!! there goes my beer money. Luckily my girfriend louise subbed me with beer all night. National Park came on and I am three rows from the front and determined to stay there. I thought they were a bit drab and grey - the songs were all a bit slow and kinda reminded me of Radiohead. Next on Eliot Smith - I have a couple of his lp's so this was a bonus support act for me. By now I was 5 rows back, I am 6ft 1inch but I still couldn't see him - so (drunken heckle number one) I shout STAND UP about 25 times - I should have lent him a guitar strap - I thought he was superb , lovely voice and a good guitar player aswell, that I could hear but not see. Then the wait - I know bands like REM will keep you waiting to increase the suspense but I knew B&S wouldn't do that - I don't mind waiting for bands but I have a pissed morish attitude to cider by now and I REALLY NEED TO GO TO THE TOILET. As we get more and more impatient, people start to push in in front of me. I start to give them some verbals (like pissed blokes do ) - If you are ready this I apologize for my attitude but I had been standing there for about 3 hrs so please don't push in again !! By now people start to boo - this made me angry - but then at last they come on. Stuart looks like he needs feeding and some sunshine - they start with a song I don't know ( why release the lp on the day of the gig !!! ?) - and then I remember the start of stars of track and field and my legs turn to jelly, hearing this song live made me love it more than ever. The quality of the sound hits me- it is awesome, acoustic instruments normally sound shit live but this was an engineering masterpiece. I don't have a set list but I do remember the bwtas and seeing other people, belle and sebastian, dylan in the movies and that's about it. My other drunken heckles were "play the state I am in " but they didn't, my girlfriend was shouting out " Are you gay" - she is very intrigued by gay men and if Stuart is reading this I apologise if you were offended in any way - she just loves gay men. I left feeling great , pissed, and I missed my train , and got a £30 cab fare back to Lewisham , my girlfriend lost her wallet. So altogether a wonderful and pissed evening - I wish they would play there again and I wish I could remember more and I wish I had a bootleg and I wish I had a set list. Dearly Beloved, It's that time of year again, when ponytailed A&R men crawl lift their noses from the Colombian Marching Powder and venture to the frozen tundras of the North, to Manchester, in fact, for the In the City festival. For us residents, this means three days of trotted around the city's bars and clubs watching bands with crap names who assure us "we're going to be massive", and laughing at them. All for free. Sometimes, someone interesting plays. Three years back, I saw four teenagers from Sunderland who wanted to be the Shangri-las. The drummer looked like a bit like me. They were called Kenickie, and I must admit I thought they were ace. I got into a row with one of the ponytails who refused to believe they were 17 (apparently, they were "too clever to be 17"), I told him he'd never been 17 in his life so what did he he know. And for extra effect, I said it in a Noel Coward voice, and turned him into a blubbing wreck. But I digress. Last night we saw The Kings of Convenience, from Bergen, Norway, who I believe some of you have seen doing their thing at Old Mother Trousers' Po Caf. No-one told me they were good though. And they were. They played on the roof, like the Beatles, and wooed the crowd all of a-smile, with natural star quality (Erlend, a dead ringer for Dennis Pennis, did an impromptu impression of Isaac Hayes in "South Park"), and warm and lovely accoustic songs. "Free Design without the girl singer", according to Emma, who knows about things like that.
