Sinister: From the UK to US

Hiya all. Wooooo Hooooo I got my tickets for the NY gig today. It would be cool if someone could arrange a meet up before the concert and i could get to know a few of you Americans.. In all this excitment i haven't booked any time off of work, God, they had better give me it or i'll have to walk out and be unemployed !! and i havent made any travel arrangements.. If any of you NYorkers know of any half descent hotels quite near to the Supper Club, i would be most gratefull... ooooh im so excited im almost peeing my pants !!! Dear puds, I have returned home from my B&S/Sinister package tour, feeling physicallly drained but a spiritual stonner. What a wonderful time. I'm ripping the virginity from my mick cooke mug as I type, I am. Now listen, I think I have quite a lot of things I have to say this evening, please humour me, and forgive me If I annoy you. Oh lordy lumme girl and boys, what a lot of messages and what a lot of new people. My little sinister machine is all sweaty and gasping and mopping its little silicon forehead and flapping its wings (it has wings). Still, it's to be expected seeing we've all been "doing something" in the last week. My response is to post one massive message, so my apologies in advance I actually do feel a little guilty. Well I have such a lot to say that all I'm going to murmur about the music-hall experience that was B&S was that Mick did indeed wear a kilt, just like on the LP (can't you *hear* it??). And that the whole thing was pretty magical, even if London was a little sticky. It sounded fine from where I was (I was at Manchester on the Saturday, and I remember thinking it sounded like I was inside an eggbox). And that I've entered into litigation over John Johnson's wicked insinuations. Hello to everyone new on the list, please read the WWW pages before you get grumbled at and try and keep the list content special - if you don't know who Sir Cliff is yet, you haven't done quite enough homework :) Hello to everyone I met at the concerts! This whole list-thing constantly amazes me, so if I looked a bit baffled in London it was nice-baffled not smarmy-baffled. Oh and thank you to my house-guests for being such nice guests! Sarah, you kick arse and all sorts of other things, and Oon, love those pyjamas. You all make my yoyo spin. Some other stuff from the lucky dip between my ears: 1. Seymour Stein. What a load of nonsense. Not the song, which I love, but the reviews. Why don't they listen to the words? There's no sneering whatsoever of little Seymour in the song, nor has he nicked Stevie's girl (for God's sake). Stevie's just wondering why he's having to do the washing-up when everyone else is eating chicken tikka massala with Steiny, and he's musing on whether such a rich man can get his girl back for him. Seems reasonable to me, it's just like Jim'll Fix It (for non UK readers, oh never mind :) 2. Why is everyone saying P!O!O! Who's saying P!O!O! and who's saying the other word now? I can't tell. 3. Philippe asked if B&S covered any other Gainsbourg - not that I know of. They did "Poupee de cire" at the Gainsbourg concert in Edinburgh this year, so they didn't have to do much homework - I think it was Isobel's replacement for "The Gate" which didn't quite work in Glasgow (see the archives at.. oh, see the archives). 4. Sorry to all digesters for the mess while I was away. For one blissful moment you thought no-one was posting didn't you? Well you're all very patient, no-one demanded their money back. 5. How does Aurore know about me and quasars? Do we have astronomer stalkers on the list? How exciting! Did you know Stuart Murdoch wanted to be one before he became a variety act? 6. The cover star of TWITSRUS is wee keyboarding Chris, being prodded by Mick's big stick sword. Chris's list detractors will be surprised to learn that he's a number one pin-up according to someone nice in Glasgow. 7. If no-one answered Tara, from memory the people in the Select photo are Stevie, Isobel and Stuart-with-longer-hair, with Mick sitting behind. 8. I don't know much about P!O!O!P!, but I must say the new Lambchop LP is quite a thing too. I *do* however have trouble "comparing" it to the B&S LP. Maybe my critical faculties are blunted, but isn't the special thing about B&S that they're "in-here" somehow, when everyone else, no matter how good, still seems to sound "out-there"? Maybe it's the list, but I have a distinct memory that I felt this the moment I heard them. Their songs attach themselves to me like limpets, and it's funny how this seems to happen on the fourth or fifth listen. I don't know why no other band seems to do this. No, I don't know what I mean either. I think I mean they're very special. 9: You know when Stuart's voice goes a little croaky and nasal in Ease Your Sheep Into Mike Leigh? I come out in a sweat and have to suck a mint. Does everyone else have to too? Appendix A: I think I earned a diversion: can someone who lives nearer the Thames explain to me what Ian Dury means by "Wembley"? Well I can guess what he means, even for an innocent blushing little flower, but I don't know how he... gets there. Sinister: Monday 7th

Dear everyone, I'm glad to be back after a summer away. I was one of the lucky people to attend the sellout London show on Monday night, shortly after purchasing the album. I was the one in the bright red Hawian shirt with flowers on it, yo-yo-ing outside, singing along at the front, hoping for that signed copy of Tigermilk, and also the one, who got maybe the only intact copy of the playlist from Stuart David at the end. Did anyone take pictures. I did. I got them back today, and I must say most of them are pretty damn good, I've got Stuart Murdoch strumming up a storm, Stevie J. swaying, the beautiful Isobel delivering the phenomenal ' Is it wicked not to care', and I still have to develop and print my black and white ones. On Tuesday morning I had a lovely cup of tea from my new B&S mug. The Huge poster dominates my wall. Well done to Belle and Sebastian on an amazing 3rd album. I am Happy as I dwell in the aftermath of "Britain's best band". If there was a sequel Would you love me as an equal? Sinister: 'What makes Molly cry' Competition

Molly confessed: >And I cried during two of the songs. Prize to anyone who can guess >which two. My vote goes to 'The Boy with the Arab Strap' and 'Is it Wicked not to Care?' Did anyone else spot Stuart whisper 'That was gorgeous' to Isobel after she finished the song in London? I think it was that, although I'm not a professional lip reader. It might have been 'Gosh that last line is pish - you know I only allowed it on the album to make my line about stroke victims wetting themselves for the last time look good'. I don't quite see why that line is so good, Martin. But then I always thought that 'Keeping her face in a jar that she keeps my the door' was pretty overrated too. Actually, to add weight to the argument that not everyone agrees about which songs rule and which are poor, I don't much like ICHBABC at all. Seems a bit B&S by numbers to me. If every album has to start with an unaccompanied vocal, I'd prefer 'instant classic' 'A Summer Wasting'. In fact, I think this problem that Brad, Duke and Co. have with the cohesiveness of the album could be solved with some judicious track order rearranging. 'Simple Things' definitely seems out of place too. But what do I know? What I Know, by Nicholas Dastoor 'Sleep the Clock Around' makes me go all funny. I never cared much for the session version, but now it sounds like the most singular, butterflies-inducing recording in the history of pop music. When I heard it for the first time it made me feel like the band were pointing the way to an extraordinarily ambitious, expectation-confounding album. It didn't quite work out that way, but still, what a track. The song 'The Boy with the Arab Strap' is, as I'm sure you all know, so exciting and clever all at once that it makes me cry (see above). But what you might not know is that it is best heard on a Walkman striding through the London Underground system. I had an elaborate gag worked out to poke fun at that review that complained that the Nick Drake lift was a sign that the band were turning into rock-reverence bores. However, our man in Spain has somewhat stolen my thunder, so I shan't bother. Instead I shall simply attempt to score rock-reverence points by pointing out the Rolling Stones references in the not-quite-up-to-scratch 'Chick Factor'. I had lots of fun in Leeds. When did all this autograph hunting go on? After a trip to the the loo I lost everyone for a bit then spotted dreamy Keith doing his thing in the Nothern Soul room. Up I gamboled and joined in, and it was a while before I looked up and realised that I was dancing with half the band. There's a thing, I thought. Didn't speak to them, although I did offer the grumpy keyboardist a cigarette, which he accepted with a shrug. Or maybe it was a frug. Hello to everyone I met - you are all very sweet. Sarah said I was an ace dancer, for which she gains extra points. Stuart Gardiner owes me a tenner for which he loses points. I hung around till long after everyone had gone away so I could catch the first train home, because I am a cheapskate and also wanted to see how hard I was. I am sad that I was too busy being a social butterfly that I didn't get a chance to see anyone from the list in London. The sound was fine at the front. Next time, to ensure everyone gets a chance to hear the songs *and* look up Mick's kilt, I suggest we form a human pyramid, with Sarah and her wand at the top. I probably agree that unless the band are to turn into rock beasts, devise elaborate dance routines, or abandon their habit of playing musical chairs betwen songs, any venue larger that this would not be work very well. Bring on the boats. Never mind audiophile production values. To me, the dangerous signs of professionalism are most clearly shown by the blatant use of PHOTOCOPIERS to produce multiple set lists for the band. This must stop. Stuart Murdoch was giving me the eye throughout, and gave me a michievous look whilst delivering the line `Ooh, I'll settle down with some old story about a boy who's just like me'.
