*---* HAPPY BIRTHDAY SINISTER BABIES *---* aaaaah - if like me you were there last night you are probably still reeling and living off the buzz. floating beanie boy elliot smith rocked my world. why wasn't everyone a bit quieter? B&S wrapped me in an aural comforter and rocked me in a delightful dreamland. sigh. no *fabu* "sleep the clock around" but my daddy said to me once "you could fly to the moon and you still wouldn't be happy". happy whispering sinister sounds filled the room and the air carried the words and the chords to the corner where i was standing and most people fell silent. top moment? le finale (en francais)....isobel sang that gainsbourg ditty with the panache of one playing a reindeer game. *bravo!* the boy with the arab strap, especially the ending...i attempted to keep up with mark's hand-clapping but i had to stop because my hands were getting sore. i was too sleepy for the club. a sort of "don't park your chicken beside a fox" rationale. i hear reports of cheery goings-on and the like. but i couldn't have felt any better. i went home on the bus with jamie cola and ate mature cheese and childish baguette and continued to "la la la" to ourselves and thought "my, i really am falling for those sexy scottish accents"....mysterious poster clutching girl with black hair crossed my path again and again and again. mocha? when i slept i dreamt of a huge icy landscape of white and blue cracks underneath, all coming apart from one another. one huge iceberg pulls away from another, falling apart and crashing. bleak and cold and wet, as a day in brixton can be, i awoke. my bag, shapeless and empty in front of me, torn from abuse received on vacations paid for on credit. it was ready and so was filled and dragged downstairs to the waiting, honking car. cosmetic smelling hair from my head, dripping and freezing, freezing as the droplets fell on my face. going up. and away. and looking down at the ice. no obectives, nothing to do. just to go. i am different from you. seeing it makes me want to kick the powder miles below, to get an ice-cream headache when i fall face first into the snow, to cry from raw pain when a gritty snowball hits my face. "it's my eye" i'd cry. - sometimes it's awesome just to look at things in dreams, non? analysis, please if you can be arsed. i have this dream quite a lot. i love you all, *hugs* lady penelope (on a floating cloud...the pink roller is in the shop) _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? Sinister: Pop Group Into Rock Venue Won't Go

*---* HAPPY BIRTHDAY SINISTER BABIES *---* Being a dismally contrary sort, I feel the need a strike a sour note amid all the joyous list kerfuffle follow last night's Shepherd's Bush hoedown (yes, I know I was the one telling you all to stop whining, even when you really weren't, following the Leeds and Nottingham shows). It was just too damn big. They play quietly - it's part of the appeal. The Empire demanded noise they couldn't and wouldn't provide. And as these things get bigger, the experience is somehow diluted (God forbid they ever play a festival) and, in this case, poisoned by, well, quite a large number of fuckers, basically. I'm not suggesting for a moment that the B&S live extravaganza be restricted to a small coterie of listfolk and their ilk at venues you couldn't swing a cat in. Oh no. But perhaps a short residency at a medium-sized theatre would be a reasonable solution in the case of the capital. The band might enjoy that. Perhaps I'm being financially naive... (More radical alternative: don't play London at all... it wasn't cheap to travel to West Yorkshire granted, but the beer's not as expensive...) Musically, I thought it edged Nottingham. I was pretty choked during "Strap" too. And finishing with the France Gall song was perfection. To be honest, all this disgruntled muttering - it's only the post-gig comedown talking, or the realisation that I'll never see anything as good as Leeds again in my life... Sinister: Please sir, can i have some more?

*---* HAPPY BIRTHDAY SINISTER BABIES *---* It's not fair! I want it to be Sept 7th again, so I can be back at the Shepherd's bush empire, revelling again in the gloriousness that is Belle and Sebastian, and I could try and get nearer the front so I could hear them better, and marvel at Neil's wonderful bass playing (bravo Neil, fame as a musician at last!) and mingle more among you lovely people, because I definetely didn't do enough. I'm so gutted that I never got to talk to Keith, to have that 4hr debate on why Xfm was so good etc. But I met Kevan, who's cool ,and has a Looper t-shirt (and also made all the right noises when i asked him if he liked my tape - ta!), and loads of lovely people in the Firkin, and at Plastic People later on, which was just getting going, getting into University Union disco c.1992 - style, when I was dragged, kicking and screaming (well, ok, still dancing to Happy Mondays on Oxford Street) in order to get a lovely 4hrs sleep. Boy, I've got to write a chapter of my dissertation today, it's going to be quality stuff, I can tell you! Who won the copy of Tigermilk then? Was it a sinister person or did it go 'outside' (gasps of shock and horror) Lucky bugger. What have I got to look forward to now, now that the gig is over, and my univeristy career is finally at an end? Oh yes, three weeks in Toronto, I think I'll survive. Honey, you're such a star for making it possible for us all to meet and stuff. And David and Katrina do a spiffing job. And the band, the band are just undescribably great. I think I'm going to cry I'm so happy...I'm hungover, how can I be this happy, nay, ecstatic?! Sorry, I got a bit carried away! I'll go now, and leave you to wonder at my sanity. *---* HAPPY BIRTHDAY SINISTER BABIES *---* Right..... 1) As for my recent comment on some of the new titles i think a recent post by someone else covered why i wasnt mad on the chickfactor title, and i think the album title would be okay as a songtitle but not as an album title, it just sounds clumsy, unfunny, i dunno.... 2) Glad most people seem to have enjoyed the gigs...wish i could have gone, hopefully i can with the next tour they do, if there will be one. 3) Got the new album today, which is damned good but will have to grow on me like the last EP did before i love it to bits. Favourite song at the moment is sleep the clock around. 4) A Summer Wasting sounds like Certain People I know by morrissey. 5) A Space Boy Dream is an improvement on Century Of Elvis.. 6) Anyone else notice the Nick Drake-esque "would you love me till im dead" bit in is it wicked not to care? 7) Not sure why but the cover art reminds me of the dog on wheels cover. not as good though. I like the green but not too keen on that blokes face! And hey, lets face it no cover will be as cool as one with a dog on wheels on it now will it? 8) Had to get the mansun album as well today.....not very well liked on here it seems, are they? 9) Belle and Sebastian are still the most wonderful band in the world then....cool... More from me sometime soon I'm sure.... Matt. PS 10) Heard the new Beautiful South song? Sinister: Last lines

ABC leaves Kurt Weill/B Brecht behind. The last line of "Is it Wicked not to care" brings it down to the level of what many on the list could write. I presume that Mr Murdoch did that juxtapositioning deliberately. Sinister: My two-penn'orth about the new album

*---* HAPPY BIRTHDAY SINISTER BABIES *---* Maybe it's just the thrill of unfamiliarity, or maybe even it's just the picture of Isobel looking like Jean Seberg, but at the moment I think "The Boy... " might be their best yet. It's seems more imaginitive, more expansive and more confident than "Sinister" and more consistent than "Tigermilk". It has highs, it has lows and it has some piss-funny lyrics. It even has fantastic tunes hiding behind such lame titles as "Dirty Dream" and "The Rollercoaster Ride". To be honest, after the expectation engendered by everything that had preceded it I was expecting a let-down but I think it all hangs together very elegantly. Sinister: The New Boy...

*---* HAPPY BIRTHDAY SINISTER BABIES *---* Morning all - just joined up this morning after months of lurking via the archive, prompted by being at Nottingham on Saturday and getting the record yesterday... The gig was GRATE, i've seen them five times now (B&S always seem to bring out the Manics Fan in me), and apart from the first time this was the best i've seen them, a million miles away from the appalling shambles of Manchester and closer to the ROCK MONSTERS in Glasgow. I was right at the front, so could actually hear, only impreded by the WOrst Singing Woman ... EVER stood right next to me who insisted on singing every song VERY loudly and VERY VERY badly. At one point even Stuart stared at her in astonishment. Still, was B&S so everyone was MUCH too polite to say anything... Best bit for me was them doing Belle & Sebastian, but during State I'm In and Seymour Stein i was WELLING UP, i was quite astonished as i NEVER do this. It was - hey - all too beautiful. My Young Lady took a load of photo's, which is another reason i took the plunge - i anyone wants a copy of her pictures (she does it for a living [tho not of bands!] so they'll be good) let me know, she's doing them soon, and copies should be about 3 quid. Anyway, got the ALBUM yesterday, and after slight worries at the standard of new songs i was releived to be completely GOT by "It Could Have Been A Beautiful Career", they lyrics of which completely stunned me. It's my favourite so far, probably along with "Son Of My Father"... Walking into a pub in London, not knowing what any of the people you're about to meet look like, but having them recognise you! (The Helen Love T-shirt, y'see. Works every time!) Luckily, the predicted Begbie/Tag punch-up failed to materialise, so I was able to enjoy a drink with a load of people with alarmingly familiar names. To everyone I blethered to: I love you lots. Gig was very good - Audience were a bit standy-still and not quite boogieing enough - and I've never heard such a large group of people go "Shhhhh!" before - but the band were tops.
