*---* HAPPY BIRTHDAY SINISTER BABIES *---* A few weeks ago somebody sent a post asking about Brit-pop clubs in Los Angeles, and obviously Cafe Bleu was the one mentioned by all that responded. While I have been going for a few months now, they played B&S for the first time last week, "Photo Jenny" to be exact. The DJ was a lady whom I congratulated on throwing in such little gems as B&S and Super Furry Animals along with the usual (but still great) Cafe Bleu dose of Pulp, Blur, Stone Roses, and other Brit super powers of the '90s. The guy who came on after her played some classic Bowie and Roxy Music, so the night was cool all around. I know this post was pretty uninteresting to most, but I guess what I'm trying to say is that those in the LA area have an even better reason to visit Cafe Bleu now. Before I sign off, thanks to this list, I've recently purchased CDs by Arab Strap and Salako. While neither match up to B&S IMHO, I'm still impressed with them in comparison to 99.9% of the pop music we're exposed to. I've ordered some Snow Patrol through the mail, but they haven't arrived yet, so I'll save comment until later. *---* HAPPY BIRTHDAY SINISTER BABIES *---* Hey kids! I have absolutely nothing to add about the new album, because I don't have it yet! So I will add a flash of brilliance that occurred to me today. I just found out that the secret song at the end of "3,6,9 Seconds of Light" was called "Songs for Children", so I had another listen to the lyrics, and found I was totally off. Do you know what I thought they were singing? "Belle and Sebastian/ on the radio/ they insult the children/ Belle and Sebastian/ on the radio/ they insult humanity..." I thought this made sense in conjunction with them apologizing for the trouble they caused at the end of the song. For the five of you who don't have it yet, it's supposed to be "playing songs for chilren" and "playing songs to learn and sing". (i am so smart. s-m-r-t.) Raise your hand if you are also guilty of this blunder. *---* HAPPY BIRTHDAY SINISTER BABIES *---* i don't get mad easily. especially by people i don't even know. well, i went off on the magnetic fields list a while back...but that's a different story. i have a problem with the following: "I think there's just too many people UP themselves about their music, it's not music any more it's a credibility race and I think that smells." i personally am hoping to gain loads of new friends by voicing an opinion on a record. just the other day i was walking down the street and out of nowhere i scream "BON JOVI IS CRAP!!!" a couple people patted me on the back and said, "damn, you're cool....and also quite credible." and: "I think there's no point nit picking for something you don't like so you can be a cool wanker, going "ah ys well I don't like THAT one, the rest of it's OK though", when you should be happy to scream" wowsers" this is prety damn brilliant and every song is great!" but what if one song stinks? must you like it because of who it is. THAT'S a sign of a "credibility" issue. and, finally: "I dunno, is it my age, am I just a wee thing at 17 and don't know how things should be?" yeah. i never said the album is crap. it's quite possibly (along with lambchop) the best album this year. and i think duke was right on. there's too many a-sides onthe album. not that you should have good song, crap song, okay song, great song in that order. but too many "up" points doesn't make for an even album. sinister was like one big song divided in ten parts. the new one is like three e.p.'s combined onto one disc. but at the same time, the songs themselves are fucking brilliant. wasting my time, brad +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list please mail "sinister(a)majordomo.net". Sinister: 'Nuff respect to...

*---* HAPPY BIRTHDAY SINISTER BABIES *---* I thought I'd break my four month silence to thank everyone I met tonight for a truly excellent evening. I probably would have made it to the Plastic People (or whatever it was called) thingy in Tottenham Court Road but a lethal mixture of tiredness, sobriety and the fact I'd lost the mate I'd gone to the gig with and would've got the night bus home with took over and I jumped the last train back to Barkingside. So it's hello to Andre, Oon, the delightful Miss Julia (and friend from Edinburgh whose name I quite pathetically cannot remember but she was lovely), Chris Leonard and the quite lovely Keith and many others. I only wish I had got to meet the Duke as I was eager to find out 101 things to do in Exeter so I am prepared for my departure in a few weeks. The gig itself was cool, though, for the most part, *far* too quiet. I am the last person to say "whack it up to 10" (I have the tinnitus to prove it!) but when you can't even hear bits of Century of Fakers and you're standing about five rows back, then I think they should increase the volume. It must have been practically inaudible at the back. They "rocked out" a bit on DIrty Dream Number Two but then it went all quiet again. Still lovely, though. Highlight was the title track of the new album. Myself and two other blokes kept the handclaps going throughout goddamit and an aching arms time was had by, well, me. For me they've done nothing better than this song. It is so beautiful it brings a tear to my eye. Those handclaps and *that* recorder solo. Wow. Can't wait `til next time. Night, night, pop kids. And everybody is very excited about the new album, and over there in england every one is actually seeing B&S live and talking about them. Not like they're big rock stars or anything, but like there real people. See , I have to wait almost 2 months till they come to athens, GA. But, realy I want to thank you all for being so cool. And in like one day, they have a new album. So. anyway its labor day in the US. So im celebrating the fact that I work 5 days a week by drinking beer and that doing that other unmentionable thing. Im watching my neighbor's cat cause he went to some progressive rock festival. I told him that about all the bands that were realy progressive (besides king crimson and yes of course) , like belle and sebastian. Hes a pretty good guy though. Anyway ereryone email me and tell me lots of good stuff, and try not to get too artsy about it. I just bought paul simons greatest hits, from the 70's. He was definatly the shit, wasn't he? The picture is of a turkey (a giant one) that came to me in a dream. Take it easy everyone. Sinister: some reference points

Call me a spoilsport if you will but I spotted many soundeelikees on that new Belle and Sebastian album... 1) Seymour Stein (the beginning of) sounds like Hedonism by Skunk Anansie, sort of. 2) Dirty Dream 2 nicks itself from a song off Sinister (I think it's the melody from the Boy Done Wrong Again in parts) plus the theme to the old kids tv series Rupert The Bear, oh, and Yes by McAlmont and Butler but speeded up. It's also far and away the best song on the album isn't it kids. Stuart sounds oddly like Nico on this one. 3) The Boy With The Arab Strap. Yes. it sounds like that Queen song, it also is the same as 'Son Of My Father' by Chicory Tip, oh, and also 'On A Chicory Tip' by Denim which Mad Robbie McTag played me the other night. 4) Chickfactor is indeed a bit of Betty Blue, it's called C'est Le Vent, Betty or something. 5) Simple Things is also an ace song, it sounds really like the Byrds doesn't it? Nice. I'd give the album 3/5. Where do we all think it will chart next week? The Divine Comedy managed to get in at no.9 apparently.
