And as far as the South goes, Brandt has a point that southern states ban alot of books (not to mention start a furor over the things they can't ban), but then again Ohio, Pennsylvania and California take the most books out of curriculums and libraries out of any states in the Union. Two are above the Mason Dixon line, and California might as well be its own nation. Yes, Pat Robertson does suck and so does the Christian Coalition, although I'm not saying Christianity itself sucks because...well...I'm a Christian. Its just sad that people have co-opted an entire religion to enfore their moral codes. Parasites always kill their host and sadly Mr. Robertson is headed down this same path. Not like he's a big believer in things natural anyway... i stumble out of the nursery gates, slightly dazed and blinking, dazzled by the bright sunshine of a world i've yet to fully explore. Squirrels and rabbits gambol and frolick as i try to get used to supporting myself alone in the world of sinister. I think i'm starting to get my emergence from the nursery confused with the plot of Bambi, but believe it or not, it took me two hours to think of a suitable fashion in which to begin my first post to the list (admittedly one of those hours was spent in a calculus lecture and i think that my recent purchase of the gentle waves album also influenced my thinking.) Anyway, i'll begin as is traditional by introducing myself, although it's hardly beginning as i'm already onto my third paragraph. My name is fiona and i'm just beginning my studies at uni in manchester. I've already spoken to one or two of you in other sinister-related correspondence, but for everyone else it won't be long before you are all desperately in love with me (particularly as most you won't have to endure the torment of actually meeting me in the flesh!) It seems of little use to ecstasise at length about my interests etc, as i feel we're all fairly similar to some extent in this community and its always more fun to get to know people as you go along. The only vaguely b+s related thing i can think of to mention is that i wore my bus t-shirt (a green +yellow one if you were interested) to university, not expecting any sort of reaction because it had never provoked one on previous outings, and i lost count of the number of people who told me it was cool, funky, .....[insert own adjective] I did say it was only vaguely b+s related, but i think that goes to show that there are a lot of appreciative souls out there, they just aren't all sad obsessives like i would consider myself to be. Despite the fact that it's my first post and i run the risk of getting myself thrown back into the nursery and list mummy throwing away the key, I have to add a gratuitous plug for my boyfriend's band Kitsch (still can't decide if i like the name) who are playing at Manchester's Night and Day Cafe tomorrow night-Tuesday 19th. They are in fact actually surprisingly good,(and you would be surprised by this if you met my boyfriend, who i recently caught wearing a nirvana t-shirt with a cardigan, but that's another story) If anyone does go, I'll be the really ott sparkly person, possibly with fur trimmed jeans. actually, nothing bookwise has been banned in the US (including it's Southern region) in quite some time. There's a difference between not stocking certain books in grade school libraries and actually "banning" them, and your misconceptions of the South are just as ill-informed and obnoxious as you accuse them of being. Someone posted that as late as the 1980s books were being banned in this country. Try as late as Oct. 18th 1999. Books are constantly being banned in the US South, and I think this shows what the real issue is--that people who read tend to be the ones who are well informed and question the world around them. I'm rather shocked that the Harry Potter (wasn't that a character on MASH?) books are catching shit, as they don't seem to be all that deep, but then again it is the American way to dictate how other people should live their lives. My mom's boyfriend does it all the time. (I'm not going there) I bet it's because the author is from Scotland--Pat Robertson warned us how Scotland has all of those homosexuals. Let's talk about Degrassi for a second. I have been wishing lately that they would put this back on the air. Oi! Someone mentioned Harry Hill impersonating Morrissey on Stars In Their Eyes. I wish I'd seen this cos I think Harry Hill is ace, and the thought of those lapels with a Morrisey like quiff is rather exciting. I was reading something yesterday about how his best mate is Al Murray the Pub Landlord and how they once went on a tour of Britain's fish and chip shops, giving marks to their fish suppers. Kids, I went to Ware this weekend instead of starting a new job in Barney's Grill, a choice which I have decided was well made after sitting in one of Ware's own greasy spoons. I went in and sat down as always - they sually look at me in a strange way, but this time they decided to just deny my existance. Which was nice. I walked out in a bit of a huff, and Hannah suggested we go to the new posh cafe down the road. "You know, the nice silvery one with the glass tables", she said. Only it turns out she'd actually dreamt up this lovely new cafe. She does stuff like that, bless her. >to wonderful Erica's devoted tape making and covers which just made me wonderful meaning a crap quality tape with no inlay, perhaps? I was organised with my tapes for a little while. I decided my underwear drawer was to become my tape draw (doesn't everyone have pants strewn across their bedroom floor anyway?) and ordered them up. All the belle and sebastian live recordings together, like a proper nerd. I'd probably be quite a good nerd, I do nerd-ish things all the time, like spill drinks down myself. Reading University, Saturday Night, 8.30, the coffee lounge - DJ played above tune by Hefner. It made a huge welcomness change from the techno in there last year.
