Hello list- My name is Nick and I'm new to the list (well, a nursery hatchling). I'm 19, and a junior at Boston University where I major in Computer Science and maybe math too. I'm originaly from CT, where the amount of B&S fans (to my knowledge) is next to nothing, and the ones I know of are people I've forced into listening to them. I play bass during my free time, which is rare, in a few local bands of various genres. I got into Belle & Sebastian a few years ago from a friend of mine. He'd play Sinister whenever I was over and I fell in love. I quickly got as many B&S records as possible, and, last year, I had the privilege of seeing them at BU's Morse Auditorium. Twas one of the best concerts I've ever attended. And now that my old laptop is about to crash, I'll send this before I have to re-type it. Sinister: Winners, losers, loopers and stuff

Hello people, Well the results of the profanathon have been counted, skewed, laughed at and hopelessly twisted. Peter Snow was round our house last night desperate to undertake a graphically-based statistical analysis of the projected and real results, but I told him to get lost. It was late and anyway I had a nice cup of tea to drink. I am going to tell you the names of the winners but not give you the full horror of their entries because, frankly, I'm embarrassed to. You people are disgusting. Vile. Twisted. Perverted. First some disqualifications. David Moore Chelmsford UK is disqualified for purchasing two copies of Nalda Said last night. Fluffy Sarah is disqualified for having won Vic Godard's guitar the other day, which is quite enough winning for any lifetime. Peter Miller has already won a copy, albeit while he was masquerading as Honey's father. Stevie Trousers is disqualified on the grounds that him winning might look like nepotism. Honourable mentions and near misses to Paula Cullen for the revolting earwax reference, to Rob Halcrow, to Matthew Dogbert and to Cynthia Someone. I couldn't award the prize to Merci Buckets, Baby Chris and Daniel Hooper, because their entries scared me too much to make me laugh. And so it falls to me to award the much coveted prizes to: 1. Mister Carsmile Steven Hewitt, with a special mention for Jisobel Campbell and Stuart Merde-och. 2. Rich, AKA Which, for usine the sort of rhyming slang which would appeal to a Mockney like me. 3. Paula Cullen for a genuinely revolting tirade. Honey will be in touch about the claimimg of your booty. Yes indeed. Congrats to the winners and commiserations to the others. Bless you all. I also very nearly awarded a copy to Joss Moorkens for writing a whole short story of such spectacular filth that it doesn't bear repetition. He earned my respect for flagrantly ignoring the rules and going for the out and out offence angle. Paula, will you lend your copy to Professor Joss, please, because I think he deserves it. Now, on to the burning issues of the day. To whit: Pooper and censorship. In reverse order: CENSORSHIP I suggest that we combine the two most important list issues of recent weeks and compile a TOP TEN LIST of things that should be censored. If this works I will sugest we compile a TOP TEN LIST of erect penises in film. I myself am a firm believer in censorship, refusing to let 4AD Records t-shirts in my house. Tell the truth, I keep a little 'secret museum' of photographs of 4AD t-shirts under my bed, with which to frighten myself and someties visitors to the house. But I would never show them to children, dogs, the lower social orders or the womenfolk. No-one knows what damage might be done. Peter Miller asked for appropriate questions for Pete Townshend. How about "why don't you retire, bignose?" or "next time you play live, how about providing your audience with a soundproof box?" LOOPER This week's compulsive mailer Deeeno said: > It was OK, spoiled by the hippy Andy is overly generous. The more melodic end of their output is tolerable if rather out-takey, while the dancier stuff just sounds pathetic and weak. Except (and I am truly sorry to say this, in full knowledge of the gravity of what I'm saying) Jesus Jones's lyrics were better. However, Looper looked like all-conquering genius by comparison to the Khaki Necromancing Octopus Buddha, a self-congratulatory, ranting hippy whose drugs experience was, like, so, like, enlightening, maaan, that he had to, like, come and bellow at us about it. Yes indeed folks, more boring tripe about the pineal gland. I might see if I can have my pineal gland removed if that is what it does to you. His third eye was as wide as the sky, apparently. I dedicate 'Spit In The Sky' by Lee Perry to him. The only thing that dragged the evening away from intolerable shiteness was the fine company. Hello chaps. Looper were so late taking the stage that the quality of their fare needed to be damned good to make up for it. It wasn't, and neither was Stuart David's ungracious, mumbling apology. Sinister: I Fought The Lure

Hi Kidz, Mostly I try to avoid buying new releases from old bands, but found that I couldn't leave the local Our Price for ages recently, due to listening to that Clash Live album. So I've got one too, now. Distance lends clarity to the view or something, coz what appeared so radical then now seems to just sit neatly on the same timeline as the Stones & Dylan. Rock on! Automobile head-banging in a Mike Myers stylee may shortly be observed on the A12. All Of These Things about the new beefed-up Looper MeagreStore gig seem to have been said already, but it is perhaps worth mentioning that the crowd shouted for Tim Hopkins, but just got that Pagan Cephalopod dude instead. I attempted to catch him, to try out the "Hi Mr Messiah, or can I call you Techno?" thing on him but he floated away too quickly. S. Troussé seems to have stood up to his exposure to DTP SO much better. And I'm dead jealous of the girl who had her hand in Trousers'. Other celebrities present: David Gedge & Sally, (or did they slip away before Looper?) & Dr Faustus. Sad git that I am, I stayed to get stuff signed by the band, who were extremely pleasant. Thanks, chaps, you were definitely worth nearly getting a stroke for after sprinting up the escalators & stairs at Liverpool Street to (just) make the last train.# Nalda Said review - pretty intriguing, but have only had time to read the first couple of chapters so far. I read more slowly in a Scottish accent. You lot, The mail you are about to read contains sexual swearwords. It will almost certainly have an adult theme. It's also extremely off-topic, but I can't resist a discussion about film censorship, one of my pet subjects. Hopefully, some of you will find it interesting. Censorship has shown signs of slackening in the UK recently, as the new president of the British Board of Film Censors seems to have taken the revolutionary step of crediting filmgoers with some intelligence. This has meant that a few horror films have finally been available on video e.g. "The Exorcist" which has been shown late night at some cinemas for many years, and was still playing to packed houses until its eventual video release. Infamous flicks such as "Driller Killer" and "Texas Chainsaw Massacre", withdrawn after the big "video nasties" furore of the early 80's (when the number of nasties you'd seen was a mark of how hard you were at school and we played Splatter Top Trumps at morning break) have also been re-released. It's been recognised that they aren't nearly as gratuitous as they were painted, and their reputations were mostly the result of hype (nothing like controversy for packing them in). I was surprised to find "Texas Chainsaw" isn't the gorefest I'd been led to believe, but is in fact some kind of masterpiece. That doesn't mean I'm in any hurry to see it again, its horror is almost entirely psychological and a lot more disturbing for it. And yes, it's well-publicised that it was Kubrick himself that withdrew "A Clockwork Orange" from the UK, but sadly, not because it was an overrated load of pretentious toss, but because of a handful of copycat acts of violence, almost certainly exaggerated. Censorship can be counter-productive, as was the case when the Argentinian censors removed the notorious nude wrestling scene from "Women in Love". As a result, Argentinian viewers got to see Oliver Reed and the other bloke (whose name escapes me) collapsed, naked and exhausted after an unspecified type of frantic physical activity, and now, quite understandably, talk affectionately of "the buggary scene". Contemporary cinema is positively littered with instances of rampant tackle. Derek Jarman got one past the censors in "Sebastiane" by shooting the offending article at the edge of widescreen, and letting the BBFC see a version in a different format so that the meat and two veg wasn't visible, the subversive little scamp. The fuss about "real shagging" in "Romance" is nothing new either, we've already had "Ai No Corrida", finally shown at UK cinemas 20 years after it was made. Like "Romance", it's rude, and not very good. "Romance" really does seem like the ultimate in porn dressed as art, and the fact it's directed by a woman doesn't really change that. It did spark one of those perennial "did they/didn't they?" debates though, because the man in it said they did, whereas the actress says they didn't. This sort of gossip crops up a lot, it happened with "Betty Blue", it happened with "Don't look now", and it happened with the "Dog on wheels" video. As far as I know Sam Peckinpah's "Straw Dogs" is still banned in the UK, and is likely to remain so. Unfortunately, although it's a very powerful and well-made film, it does suffer from some very dubious notions about women. My Mum liked it though. The Brits certainly aren't the only ones to wave the censorship scissors around..."The Last Temptation of Christ" is banned in Greece. Several countries won't let Pasolini's "Salo" anywhere near a public cinema. And anyone who's been been glued to "The hip-hop years" in recent weeks will know that Brandt's comments about the American "moral" "majority" and their motivations weren't exactly without foundation. Here in Britain, we've got our own army of "outraged of Surbiton"s, most of them writing for the Daily Mail, who'd dearly love to see the likes of "Crash" kept off-screen (there were even a few local councils who tried to put the mockers on "Crash", thus denying residents a remarkable piece of unintentional comedy), but generally I tend to think that the BBFC have ignored such kneejerk reactions, and got the balance right. Worryingly, that Jordan Knight single is freely available to minors, despite the ex-New Kid pin-up clearly proclaiming "Anyone can make you sweat, but I can keep you wet". I mean...really. Won't somebody think of the children? Worst of all, I was shocked to read that Trousers is *still* allowed out after dark, and regularly attends gatherings where young ladies may be present. Ban this filth. Hello my fellow listees.Today I relised that I'm broke,skint.I have been trying for three weeks to open a bank account and they won't open me one.But the thing is I actually don't care.I'm in too good a mood to be annoyed by something like that.Anyway,as for the banning issue;I've seen Clockwork Orange,which is a brilliant film and I honestly don't see a reason for it to be a problem,and the Catcher in the Rye is one of my favorite books.It's one of the best books along with On the road and the Howl.We had to write an essay for it back at school.So what is the problem with it? Sinister: The Kids of Degrassi Street

One summer two years ago I worked with a girl Martha Copestake whose dad was the soundman on Degrassi. Joey Jeremiah was her babysitter!!! She told me that he had a crush on her but she wasn't interested, probably because she was 10. I was shocked to learn from her that Degrassi was a cool show everywhere BUT Toronto (is this true??). She was really embarrassed that her dad worked there. FYI There is a website dedicated to the Legacy of Degrassi: http://www.degrassi-junior-high.org/ and yes there are even Degrassi conventions. I think the Zit Remedy was my favourite band back then aside from Duran Duran. Even though they only had one song... ok they only had two lines of one song. But it was enough for me. Everybody wants something they'll never give up... Everybody wants something they'll take your money and never give up.. Words to live by.
