Does anyone think that the part of the song in "Mayfly" just after he sings "but you would love him anyway" sounds like Sweep (you know that dog puppet from the sooty and sweep show or whatever it was called). Because of this similarity i can no longer take the song seriously, not that Belle and Sebastian should be taken seriously anyway! Thaken seriously as a spoon full of sugar... Well that is all perhaps i should retreat to my game of freecell and dream about kissing boys with black rimmed glasses... Do boys tell the secrets, that their girlfriends told them after they break up? Just being paranoid.... Good Moaning, (as in the English policeman from "Allo Allo") Being a damn nice guy I felt that that I should write and forewarn anyone planning to attend Snow Patrol's Aberdeen gig as part of the Alternative Festival to turn up late, as support is beng provided by the innocuous sounding but truly horrific Needles. These perrenials of the Aberdeen "scene" don't just stink in an ordinary sense, they really stink. Think the 3 month old corpse of a particularly committed Levellers fan. In a sauna. To make matters worse they seem to believe in the "healing and redemptive power of rock 'n' roll", which means attempting to sound like the mAKE-UP or John Spencer Blues Explosion. Except with Aberdonian accents. Think the John Spencer Yeast Infection and you're moving along the right lines. I heard the most fantastic insult ever the other evening. It was like a Free Jazz insult; formless and continually evolving: "You are such a wank Fraser. No, serious, a total wank. You are such a wank you have a poster of Keith Chegwin on the wall of your flat. In the nuddy. With his knob slapped out on a table. There he is, with his chap in one hand, giving you the thumbs up with the other. And its autographed." I meant at some point during this incoherent heap of gibberish to mention Alexander Spence, The Nectarine No.9, Tommy Sheridan, Alasdair Gray, Claudio Caniggia and even Belle and Sebastian (crazy or what?). Oh well.. Dear List, Yes..I as well am curious to reviews of "Nalda Said". That Stuart David! Is he a Renaissance man,or what? Pretty soon I shall be expecting a series of oil paints from him.Then maybe a Stuart David Collection For The Home,with his whimsical designs for bed and bath.Actually..right now 'Winter Wooksie' is my favourite Belle and Sebastian song..(is that correct? Is it Belle and Sebastian or just Stuart David) Its gives me a warm,pleasant feeling in my tummy as I walk through all the crunchy,coloured leaves.I tried really hard to think of sweary words in that Tim Hopkins competetion,but alas..well,I wont even tell you what I came up with because it was so sad.By GOD,i TRIED to incorporate bodily functions,but mine were so lame. Sigh..why doesn't anyone use the term 'lets get it on' anymore? That appeals to me much more.Ex: 'Ohmigod,did you see cornation street? Spider and Toyah were getting it on!' or 'martin platt and genevieve got it on' Oh,you! Halloween costumes. Oh what fun! I am always so ambitious to get a Xena Warrior princess costume,but it never happens.Have you ever tried getting a pre-packaged halloween costume if you're female? Everything is "spicy" or "seductive". 'Spicy Nurse' 'Spicy Medieval Princess' 'Seductive Witch'.And the costumes aren't even that seductive.All the girls on the packages have really really big...hair.And long,plastic nails.I'm actually going to be a french maid this year.But dont roll your eyes,its for that whole virgin rocky horror picture show thingy.Now,they call Belle and Sebastian fans weird and cult-ish? I'm sorry,but we are nowhere NEAR as freakish as the rocky horror fans.We are quasi cult.Ok,so we have fetishes for girls with thick glasses.When the boys on the list have fetishes for girls that look like Stuart Murdoch,THEN I will be impressed. Speaking of which,I think Stuart Murdoch would make a fine Rocky,running around in golden underpants.Can't you just see it? Hes got that whole look goin' on.But who would be the evil Dr.Frank? Hmmm,maybe that Stevie,hes got a bit of a sinister glint in his eyes,doesnt he? (Isobel could play the part of Meatloaf.Oh,I'm teasing.) So when is Belle&Sebastians new album coming out?? hello, kittens! did i really post on friday night? ah, 'twas the vodka talking. well, i'll have you know that the tight black clothing did me no good, and the absolut did little more than make me behave in a way that drew many an amused look from my spanish professor. class was funny this morning ;) saturday night brought me to pittsburgh to see a neat local band called harm and also the rondelles, playing at the andy warhol museum. miss KIMberly and i (and a few others) hauled ourselves down to the city for this lovely occaision. i'll let kimmy tell you why the warhol museum is special to her (hint hint, miss kim! post, damnit!) harm were beautiful beautiful pop, and the rondelles kicked my butt. for reals. the drummer plays drums And the keyboard -- Simultaneously! beat that! can i just say how wonderful you all are? this current book-banning conversation on another list would have turned ugly in 2 seconds, complete with about 100 2-line emails like, "you ignorant *&%$$@#@!! get a clue!" or something. here we have prompt apologies/ clarification, and intelligent, well-informed replies. you all rock. tonight my artiste apartment-mate is taking me to her class/critique as part of "bring yr non-artist friend to class" day. i'm a bit nervous, seeing as how i actually Did take art once -- two years ago, basic drawing; i quit after one month. one month! i failed so miserably. darling miss lesley jo! where art thou?? i miss you! xoxo, marie ===== ************************************************************************************************* "I was a proper snob in college, as only a future lifetime English major can be" - buddy glass "to me she was just marie." -mersault ************************************************************************************************* __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? sorry about that, I was just trying to clarify on a UK based mailing list that slurs against the Southern US are cheap shots, and should be taken with a grain of salt by any one in the UK where I once tried to ship a vhs copy of Clockwork Orange to a friend only to have it returned by customs as banned material. I was told that it (along with such films as the Exorcist, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Evil Dead, Evil Dead II, and Abel Ferrara's Driller Killer) was illegal to import there. I was surprised, as I didn't realise that your government was in the business of banning things. Was I misled? Has the policy changed? Sinister: book banning

>Someone posted that as late as the 1980s books were being banned in this >country. Try as late as Oct. 18th 1999. To those who corrected the terminology angle. Yes, *banning* no longer exists in the sense that books become illegal and possesion is a crime. However, there is still a congressional list of books that for lack of a better term is called the banned books list. This is the list I was refearing to, in the sense that a list existed started by a goverment sponsered agency to investigate appropriate reading material. This list is meant as a guide as to what books may be *dangerous* for children and others to read and has in the past included Huck Finn, James and the Giant Peach, Alice in Wonderland, the Bible for a short time, and so on. It existed as late as the 1980's and I've been told an *advisory* list and panel still exists as a congressional sub-sub-panel somewhere. Also, many churches and evangelical organizations have these types of lists. Also, it's not all christians doing the banning, Many groups try to supprese what they don't like. I'll use and example: last year a childrens book called Nappy Hair or somesuch was boycotted because of a precieved racism. The book was highly reguarded by many teachers and children as having a positive message about being oneself and it was boycotted and removed from a school because a person who hadn't read it assumed a racist intent. It went so far that the teacher who read the book to her class faced disciplinary actions as a result. Thankfully they were all cleared when the book was reviewed by parents and found to be not racist in the slightest. Talking to one of the local librarians I've found that many of the town's library books like Catcher in the Rye, and magazines like Cosmo (sex articles and the like) are routinly vandilized. The fellow who owns the local bookstore tells me that at least once a day someone complains about his stores content and demands he remove things like D&D games, Buddist texts, science fiction, etc. Beyond all that, let's try not to start a mudslinging contest between countries, okay? The taboos and censorship that exists in different countries all suck. Sure, Clockwork Orange may be banned in London (is it?) but Dogma was effectivly banned for awile because Kevin Smith couldn't get anyone to release it thanks to possible backlash from christians. Sinister: I've been misconstrued...

Well now that I have made to look quite the ass... 1.) My intention was not make a sweeping genralization about the US South, but I realize in the context that I placed it it could be taken that way. I am well aware of how intolerant Ohio can be...I've lived here all my life. Believe me, I'm not happy about it. 2. I have no problem with Christianity in general. What I have a problem with is when a Christian uses their beliefs to justify their horrible treatment of others. Christianity is supposed to be a spirituality of forgiveness and yet I have seen more people oppressed, beat down, and killed in Christ's name. And it isn't just Christianity--Any religion that pulls that sort of stunt rides me the wrong way; I simply lashed out with Christianity, because that is what is pushed in my face all of the time. It was not my intention to single out all Christians--my mom and brother are Christians--just the ones who take it too far. I hope this has cleared things up.
