Sinister: Hogmanay? Bah! Humbug!

Hi guys, Well, I queued from 6am until 8.45am, but I got my Travis ticket, along with mild frostbite and a good laugh. Highlight of the morning was when a guy rode past on his bicycle, laughing loudly at us in our tinfoil wrappings and fell off his bike. That was funny. I was on the news for approx 0.03 of a second too, I was the guy in the green leather jacket who jumped and waved at the camera <grin> If anyone recognises me at the gig, come and say hello. There can't be too many guys with a green leather jacket and a Radiohead top :) My Hogmanay plans are now in ruin. I originally had promises of a get-together from ten people. That was a month ago. Throughout this week, they have all cancelled on me, leading me to question how I smell. This bascially means that I'll be sitting in my bed, watching everyone on TV having a great time and crying. Stuff certainly kicks you when you're down, don't it? I heard a rumour that our band are planning to release gig details in January. I really, really hope that this is true, because they're one of my two fave bands that I haven't managed to see live - the other being Radiohead. Fingers crossed.... I though of a great title for the new album.... how about... 'Subtletwee' [subtlety, get it?] <grin> I think I should be the cover star, and I await my phone call inviting me to be photographed :) The book with my story in it apparently goes to press this week. I'll let y'all know when it does. Anyone going to see Beck in March at the Clyde Auditoriam? I'll leave now. Crafty Barnardo out! Apparently Prince's '1999' album has sold out in many shops. Other pop starsmight learn from this example. Kate Bush's career has gone a bit flat since she wowed the BPI award nominations panel with her version of 'Rocket Man'. Perhaps she could engineer some kind of nuclear holocaust in a bid to whip up interest in her classic post-apocalyptic vision 'Breathing'. Or Status Quo could campaign for the reintroduction of National Service and hope the kids go wild for 'In the Army Now'. Today I abused company facilities by looking up famous people on the electoral roll. Don't tell anyone. Did you know that Steven P Morrissey is living with his lovely wife Deborah somewhere in Cheltenham? Neither did he, I would imagine. yer,i know it's a stupid subject title but i just wanted to say sth about xmas.so,how's shopping for everyone?i'm not shopping anything.no sir!i will not play that game.xmas my ass.i mean it's nice buying a little sth for the new year and all that but let's not get mad.alright? oh well! i'm going home next week.if there's anyone from the list in athens on 21/12-most probably not one person but me,but anyway-,there's going to be a brilliant party in this club,planB by a group of dj's named kapamarou.they're friends of mine and they play really good music-and B&S,of course 'cause they play everything I want 'cause they know if they don't, well,they're going to die!i can't wait!i think i shouldn't even have mentioned all that but i've seen a couple of greek names on the list and thought i'd inform them.is this inappropriate or sth, mummy? i've read on the B&S site that they're going to record a john peel session.does anyone have any idea when is it gonna be broadcasted?i hope i'll be in england by that time.and i hope they're gonna play a gig somewhere near here(they did say they're planning a tour,as well.i read it.honest!)-WOLVERHAMPTON ,that is. Sinister: Permanent Vacations?

I have a really wierd question. Is the fact that Belle and Sebastian have been pretty much inactive in 1999 so much a bad thing? Let me explain. When I started listening to Belle and Sebastian, I had to be dragged into it. They were constantly being lauded by people on the indiepop list and all I could think to myself was, "No band can be THIS good." Then I found out people like Beth Arzy and Pam Berry really dug B & S, and since I dug the kind of music they were doing, I had to give the music they liked a shot. But it did nothing for me. And I had other, more reliable stuff to listen to, like the Softies and Poundsign and so I just let it slide. Then one day, I was sitting on the porch, shucking corn (this is true. You can't make this sort of thing up.) and I decided to listen to Sinister again. And while I was there, sitting on the porch, shucking corn the album captured me. I was totally drawn into the phenomenon that is Belle and Sebastian. (Plus my mom got the totally wrong idea about the band because she walked by the stereo just in time to hear Stuart M. sing "She was into S & M and bible studies" and then proceeded to ask me what "this kinky crap I was listening to was.") Suddenly I had to have more Belle and Sebastian. Anything Belle and Sebastian related was soon owned by me as I tracked down many of the hard to find UK EPs. I got excited hearing about Looper and the Gentle Waves. I had bought into the popular misconception that the band could do no wrong. But then my critical self took over. Yes, i admit, I still claim that Sinister is the greatest album recorded this decade, but to be honest, ever since The Boy With the Arab Strap, I have been a bit disappointed with them. The Looper album, which initially amazed me, ended up disappointing me because most of the songs were the same song played different ways. And I won't even touch the Gentle Waves. So maybe it's better that they are quiet. Maybe the vacation will help them put out a fabulous new album in 2000. Brandt "Don't worry lads. Sinister: In the strangest places

Dear everyone, The unthinkable happened to me in this small Kentucky college-town (known to be home of Jim Varney- Ernest P. Warrel) that has put a huge smile on my face. I was walking down the halls of the fine arts building late last night, after a play. Suddenly, I heard Belle and Sebastian in my head, and I was happy that it was so crystal clear in my brain- it almost seemed real. Then I realized- SHIT MAN, THAT IS REAL!!! I ran down the hall like a crazed madman and found the room it was coming from and burst through the door and said, "GOOD GOD, WHO IS PLAYING BELLE AND SEBASTIAN?" Luckily, I didn't walk in on a classroom, but I did meet a friendly freshman boy listening to IYFS while editing a film reel. He had actually seen Belle and Sebastian in concert in New York. I was so flustered that I must have seemed like a crazed fanatic and scared him, but I hope I didn't. Finally, someone who is just like me in the same fucking town. He even has Tigermilk on vynil. Crazy, eh? Two questions: This kid didn't like Belle and Sebastian very much in concert. Do those of you who have seen the band in concert agree that they are not so good live? I know that people have issues with Isobel, but I'm wondering if anyone noticed on that much despised "Gentle Waves" album that she plays every instrument under the sun. So, I really am wondering (from the musicians)- can anybody tell me (technically speaking) how good Belle and Sebastian and/or Isobel is musically? Sinister: surprise blew up in my face...

Well, I thought that I was having a dismal birthday. My 3 friends and I went out for a pint at this silly little bar up road from me. They're older than I and after one beer they got tired and went home. I had to leave as well for the bar was gearing up for a drag beauty contest. My parents are in California and they left me a voicemail happy birthday...my old roommate left me a Marilyn Monroe (I always wanna say Manson now,) birthday greeting. It was like like the one she did for JFK, I played it on speakerphone for everyone in my office. I got frustrated at my little bald man for not being too keen on inviting people out to got REALLY celebrate on Saturday night at my favourite little club. Turns out, SURPRISE!!!, I'm getting a party after all. Now I have to fake surprise, but I'm an evil little angel so this shouldn't be a problem. I saw the suggestion for gangstah indiepop and nearly fell off my chair. I'm really liking that idea. The little popsters could wear their wooly little hats down over their eyes and really baggy cords... I wonder what kinda band names they would have, or would they all be solo acts with one big collective name? I've been at work since 7am and all I've done is read all your emails (yes, I read every single one...)I'm really excited cus it's Stereolab tonight with Jim O'Rourke boy...the only silly thing is that the doors for the concert open at 5:30pm!!! The whole thingy has to be over by 9pm...hmmm... I'm gonna stop this now. bye. angel. Sinister: i think i should get more sleep

hey kids, having recovered from my stalking scare, thought i'd give you an update on my state of mind. i have, in fact visted the uni computers several times at 3am since the aforementioned incident, but alas no-one seems to want to scare me shitless. dammit, it was almost thrilling in a worrying sort of way. i have some almost b+s content: i saw a girl on the bus yesterday wearing a b+S badge!! most of you would centre an amusing falling over / falling in love anecdote around that fact, but i neither have a true story to relate about it or the imagination / inclination to make one up, so you'll just have to cope. just wondering - did anyone hear hefner doing 'it'll be lonely this christmas' on john peel the other night? how fantastic was that? (in case you didn't hear it, the answer is it was truly splendid) love the snowflakes on the web page, if only snow really did look that and wasn't cold, and wasn't wet, and came in different colours, and in fact wasn't snow at all, but was a kind of play dough that fell from the sky that would melt after you got bored, but at no point turned to slush. you know you want to live in my world!! also, you know how fish+chip shops make deep-fried mars bars and apparently now some will deep-fry and batter any foodstuff you care to bring into their establishment. well, without being gratuitously surreal, do you think you could take household objects and have them battered? you could gradually build up a battered room and a battered house, and eventually a battered empire. cover the world in batter!!! come on kids, crispy implements are the way forward!!! -the boy with the battered strap -she's battering it -dog covered in batter / fox in the batter -la battered pastie -the batter that i am in taxi for fiona.... love and the sweet sweet song of the nightingale. pleasant dreams children +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the reborn Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail "sinister(a)majordomo.net".
